So first, Happy Independence Day! May your America be extra American today. Unfortunately, I am here to talk about the most unfortunate type of independence. We may soon be free of Isaiah Thomas- beloved underdog, excellent point guard, Sacramento patriot and my favorite current King. I do not want this to be true but the evidence- a new point guard promised a starting role, cryptic public statements from the front office, potential offers beyond what Sac is willing to offer- points strongly to this sad possibility.
I am writing this for two reasons. The first is that I am TERRIBLE at sports predictions. I mean, like to the point of games going exactly like I hoped they would until the last five minutes ( ugh, the World Cup). So I'm hoping that by putting this in writing, I will inevitably be wrong, and therefore celebrating IT's return.
The second reason is that when Isaiah dons a new uniform, I want to determine what an acceptable return would be to the masses of this website. I am pretty sure just letting IT go would be unacceptable, so if he goes, I am assuming most would like to see a sign-and-trade. So let's crowdsource that answer, as our front office is so fond of doing. What would you all want in return?
For my part, I could be happy only with a direct need filled at reasonable price. I'm not talking about Josh Smith. He may, possibly, fill a need with his defense, athleticism and passing. But with his history, his shooting deficiencies, and his tremendous contract, he is not worth IT. Derrick Williams and Jason Thompson? Sure. But not IT, not even if his new salary is 8+ million per year.
For IT, I want one of two things. Either an athletic big man that fills at least two of three of our big-man weakness- defense, preferably rim-protection; spacing, preferably through shooting, and rebounding. I'm talking someone like Amir Johnson, Robin Lopez or Paul Millsap. That, or a first-round draft pick. Something to make up for the great Hickson debacle of 2011.
So those are my conditions, or at least hopes. What are yours?
