GAME 53 vs Atlanta, Game Thread

(Things will get back to normal soon. I hope.)

I will not laugh uncontrollably if Beno Udrih abuses Mike Bibby. I will not laugh uncontrollably if Beno Udrih abuses Mike Bibby. I will not laugh uncontrollably if Beno Udrih abuses Mike Bibby.

I will probably laugh uncontrollably if Beno Udrih abuses Mike Bibby.

But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate all the good years Mike Bibby has given the fans of Sacramento. Because I do.

I just want to see the next point guard abuse the former one. That's all.

Go Kings.

Are you ready
to see some glaring weakness in 'Big Shot'? Nothing like watching a beloved player with new eyes than seeing 'em on a different team(Huh, Webb).

Webb
Webb Had broken knees when he left here. That's when everyone saw him with those "new eyes". No one in their right mind thought he was still the dominant PF he used to be. Bad analogy bro-

by Hoops916 on Feb 20, 2008 7:15 PM PST up reply actions

Webb
You obviously didn't read the fanzine at kingsfans.com back then...they ALL thought it was a travishamocracy that Webber had been traded...well, at least those fans whose posts weren't deleted anyway.  /sarcasm.

Well...
then, maybe I overestimated the intelligence of Kings fans. I loved Webb, and yes, I do think we traded him for a bunch of trash...But I think it was pretty apparent that his time was done

Horford plays on a better team than Durant does. Also Durant plays on a team that had way too many F's for him to play at a more natural position (3 or 4).

If/When Ron Goes
I will miss watching him when he is right. He is awesome when he is right.

I can't envision Ron getting less than 5 years at $12 million per, and if he does get less than that you probably don't want that Ron (the one who thinks he got short changed) on your team. So, if we pony up $60 million for him you can say bye to Beno as we will already be over the cap for next year by about $10 million or more if my math is right.

I'm Thinking More Like
4 years at $10 million a year, backloaded of course to the extent that it can be. I think the Artest Discount will prevent him from being paid like his play says he should be.

Keep that chip on his shoulder all the way to the championship.

He's...
taking a nap while crybaby Brad plays

They need to quit passing to him inside. He's just not getting the job done. He's not aggressive enough, and Atlanta has some excellent young shot blockers that are all over Brad.

by vfettke on Feb 20, 2008 9:05 PM PST up reply actions

It wasn't Brad's fault
Atlanta has excellent interior defense.  If you take the ball inside against them you draw a crowd of shot blockers.  That's the way Atlanta plays it.  That's where guys like Martin and Garcia need to go off from the perimeter.

Garcia is the perfect 6th man
High energy. Hustle D. Not afraid to take the big shot. Doesn't complain to the refs. I absolutely see him as a key cog of a championship team, and I'll guarantee you most teams would love to have him coming off the bench.

by SavageBeast on Feb 20, 2008 10:04 PM PST up reply actions

You can never have
Enough guys who can shoot the 3 ball.

I was surprised the Spurs moved Brent Barry, but I guess he's banged up. Don't think they wouldn't love to have a cheap guy like Garcia who's not afraid to take the big shot.

My only concern with Garcia is not paying him too much when his time is due. Too much for me would be more than $3-4 million a year. Of course, that's a ways away and things could change between now and then. In the meantime, I'll just relish some more of those sweet shots. The dude can stroke it.

He gets a little frustrated against a shot-blocking team and he tends to want to keep jamming it in there. Better sometimes to let a banger like Artest run over a few guys instead and take more of those 18-foot jumpers.

You know what
I would love brandon wright, but I don't see any way we get him.  And I would be ok with kleiza considering the potential and cost.  But if ron-ron can be signed for 8-10 mil and plays like this last week for 80% of the time (throw in some chest thumping...I don't care)I am definitely ok with a modest deal.  If decent (which given the market I think will be in the 9 mil range for artest, then sign him, if not, let the beast free.

Market
I think I read today that only 4 teams would be under the cap currently entering next year (pookey feel free to ream me a new one).  So considering gilbert will be out there, josh smith (r.), maybe elton b., and suddenly 12 mil plus does not look so hot for artest.

Seems like an interesting game thread.  I was at a bar with some friends, so reading everyone's thoughts afterward is fun.  Lets all remember, good Ron is great, but bad Ron ruins a franchise.  Lets all learn to say goodbye, and thanks for the hard work every night.
To those claiming Garcia is expendable, I could not disagree more.  he's a good clubhouse guy, that plays hard every night, has no fear, and plays tough D.  He looks like a more athletic Tayshawn Prince to me.  I'd give him an extension this off-season.

But I don't believe Ron has ruined any franchises.

You can blame him for the fight in Detroit, but there's no way the Pacers win more than 60 games in one year before that without Ron Artest playing his ass off. And Indiana's current woes have more to do with the trade with Golden State than Artest.

It was a trade that Indiana had to do
Indiana needed new faces, and having white faces didn't hurt there. Hate to say that, but unfortunately there's a limit to what those fans could take. The Pacers are far worse off than the Kings are, and in large part because they have a hurt big making big money. Ahem, Chris Webber supporter's.

I'd say,
Pacers fans are more like Portland fans.  They didn't need more white faces, they just needed better citizens.  It's really hard to root for guys who are making millions and running roughshod over your franchise with legal and on court issues.

Maybe more like the difference between small market and big market teams.  In smaller markets (especially single team towns like Portland and Sac or towns where your bball team in the least of your major league franchises like Indy) maybe issues get magnified.  Especially when they're not winning.

Look at how Portland has embraced the Blazers since they've basically replaced that entire team, it's not much (if any) whiter...the guys are just better players (and citizens) and the city is falling in love with them again.

But you and I have different life experiences and perspectives, so I can't say you're wrong.  Things just look different from where I live as a fan.

I read an interesting profile of Caron Butler recently (prolly from a TrueHoop link).  Here's a guy (like Juan Dixon) who's lived the roughest of rough when they were younger but seem to have outgrown it.  My issues are with the dudes who escaped horrible upbringings yet want to perpetuate what they've escaped by continuing to relive that lifestyle but have the means to live better and safer lives. And I've never understood fans who ridiculed Peja as a soft white Euro player if they've ever read a couple of articles regarding his youth.  Bombs, guns, and racism in his home country forcing his family to relocate and lose everything.  A seriously ill brother.  Maybe he wasn't clutch, but I'd guess he wasn't soft to have made it as far as he did.

My worthless two cents.

God bless you, Corliss. You always played as though you knew how expensive my tickets were. -section214

My comment wasn't really about race. But it hasn't hurt the Pacers in that end. I would bet the 3 most likeable players on the Pacers roster are Travis Diener, and Jeff Foster right now. (Yes, that's a shot at JO given the disillusionment fans in Indy have with JO at the moment. I think they want that guy, and his albatross contract, away from the team. Still think the Webber deal wasn't a big deal to move? Sure Kenny Thomas hurts, but it was a price to pay to move an even worse contract for the team away.)Take that from what you will. (I don't think it had as much to do with race. I think it had alot to do with the fact that the Pacers got Dunleavy & Murphy for 2 players with bad reputations in Indy who just so happened to be black. That's why I brought it up because normally I would wholeheartedly agree with everything you pointed out about Portland and race.)

Caron Butler had a hard life? I didn't know that, but I've always liked Butler, and thought his only really disappointing year as a NBA player was his only season in LA because he was caught in the pull of Odom/Bryant and never really fit in. I'm glad to see he's flourished in Washington for 2 reasons. A) he's really talented, and B) he's a smart guy who carries the burden of being a thoughtful inciteful media go-to-guy which is not a small thing in a political/black town like DC.

Last but not least, and I thank you for your intelligent response, thanks for the hat tip on the Caron Butler link. Butler is a guy who seriously enjoys his time as a NBA player. (I would also pick him as the best Wisconsin native player to ever play in the NBA if I had my way. Although I would stroke my chin thoughtfully over Latrell Sprewell and Terry Porter.) Either way I always appreciate your responses, and that's regardless of whether I agree with them (which I do in this case).

Getting Tony Parker
with the last 1st round pick of the draft, and Manu Ginobili with the 2nd to last 2nd round pick of a draft doesn't hurt the cause either. I think Greg Oden will help elevate the Blazers to a championship level, but I think the team's best player will either be LMA or Roy. I'm not saying Oden's overrated, but I think LMA and Roy will end up being better as individual players.

Let me put it this way
We've all heard the statement," Michael Jordan and 4 other guys off the street could win an NBA game." Well that's complete and utter bullshit, and Jordan of all people knew it. (I've read Sam Smith anecdotes talking about just that in fact. Jordan would play guys in a pickup game and not let them get off a SHOT.)

So let me say this. How many playoff series did Michael Jordan and the Bulls play in before Scottie Pippen/Horace Grant got there? How many playoff games did MJ win before either arrived?

In 84-85 they went 38-44 for a respectable record (in the mid to late 80's finishing below 500 was not considered to be mediocre the way it is today).

In 85-86 they went 30-52 and got lucky making the playoffs. Of course Jordan dropped 63 in that game Larry Bird (in his own magical prime) said he saw God in basketball shoes.

In 86-87 the bulls went 40-42 to make the playoffs again. They were a mediocre team, but good enough to make the playoffs. And Michael Jordan is, despite every attempt I've launched about how "overrated" his defense is, or at least talked about anyway, truly showed how incredible he is.

In Pippen's/Grant's first season the Bulls went 50-32. I rest my case. So the next time somebody tells you that the Bulls were all about Jordan (and mostly they were--but they were great teams and great teams don't have ONLY one great player) you can say un-unh.

by Psychrates on Feb 20, 2008 11:25 PM PST up reply actions

Pippen was definitely Robin
Look at what he did after Jordan left: nothing.

I really can't stand it when people bash the importance of role players.  It shows a complete misunderstanding of the game and leads to teams like the Nuggets, Houston, ect, that have no good, smart role players and will never win a championship.  Look at any of the championship teams in the history of the game, and you will always find a plethora of smart role players (which always include at least one 3-point specialist).  Every single one of those Bulls teams had such players, from John Paxson and Steve Kerr, and of course Grant, ect (if my memory was better I could name 15 more).  And just because these teams had plenty of such players does not mean there are plenty out there - many teams in the league have none or don't use or value the ones they have properly.  Just look at the impact an "interchangeable" player such as Kyle Karver has had on the Jazz.  Role players like Cisco are the difference between championship teams and pretenders.  So RECOGNIZE.

by thelettere on Feb 21, 2008 3:22 AM PST up reply actions

ummm...
didn't he take the JailBlazers to the conference finals?

My league-knowledge of that time is a bit limited, but I thought he was crucial at that point.

And, oh yeah - in Jordan's "baseball" time off, Pippen lead the team in 5 categories, from his NBA page:

Pippen led the Chicago Bulls in five categories-scoring (21.4 ppg), rebounding (8.1 rpg), assists (5.2 apg), steals (2.94 per game), and blocked shots (1.13 per game).

Pippen is top-50 all-time. The guy is friggin nice.

You're selling Pippen Short
Pippen played on teams that didn't win less than 45 games until late in his career when he was no longer a superstar. This is his playing stats. That does not suggest a "Robin" type player. He wasn't Michael Jordan, but he had plenty of effect on the game. In fact he and Michael formed a dynamic duo that changed the game forever. John Paxson was a different player because of Pippen. Kerr too. Role players are great, but the real studs like Pippen and Jordan are ir-replacable. This is an argument that any realistic Bulls fan will tell you (which also are backed up by the magical record increase after Pippen/Grant come to the Bulls in 1987).

Chicago's record during Pippen's tenure.

Houston in the shortened season where Pippen played for a season when went 31-19.

In the 5 years Pippen played in Portland  his teams had win totals of 59 50 49 & 50 wins. Yeah, Pippen was an awful player who had no real impact on the teams he was on. That is complete and utter bullshit. Stop dis-respecting a top 30 player of all time.

Top 50
Pippen undoubtedly is.  I've always stuck up for him.

Jordan, however, was the leader of that team.  Pippen, much like our friend K-mart, simply does not have the temperament of a a leader.  I was not comparing talents - they were both incredible - but Jordan was still Batman in the sense that he was the one setting the drumbeat, the one with the fate of the team in his hands at the end of the game.

P.S.  Like most arguments, this one started more with a dislike of a tone of voice than a disagreement with a statement.

OK, Bottom line:
You can have all the cap room in the world. You can pay as much as you like. BUT, there has to be a REASON for a FA to come to Sacramento(It sure as hell ain't the nightlife/culture). To GET a star it helps to HAVE a star. The 'golden years' only happened because Vlade's a man of his word and said he'd come here. think Can you imagine that team w/o Divac in the beginning? It never would've got off the ground and players would've continued to bolt as usual in those days. Kevin Martin is not enough to attract a large FA. Hell, Money's not even enough, they can get that elsewhere. Real stars want to WIN, and realize that play with another star helps that.

Case in point: Atlanta

They signed JOE JOHNSON to be the franchise in ATL. Think that was worth it, for either side?
They're building through the draft, but they ALWAYS do, and they hardly get crap out of it anyway. I'm pretty sure Joe loves the money and hates going to work. I'm also pretty sure leaving PHX was about the dumbest thing he did career-wise. Real star FAs aren't jumping to a team of scrubs, ever. Ron is the closest to a bona-fide national star the Kings have at the moment. He goes, you won't get anyone else of his caliber as a FA. I think that's just the way it is, fellas.

What good is money,
if you have nowhere to spend it? The Kings over the years have had PLENTY of cap space to throw at STAR FAs and have failed to sign one. The formula has been to trade and re-sign, not sign outright. A true STAR FA knows the money's in marketing and visibility, not the contract they sign. Sacramento ate Mitch's career. We love him, he's THAT good, but he would be held in much higher regard(and MUCH wealthier) had he played in a large market. Mitch could walk down the street in San Antonio, New York, Oakland, L.A. Chicago, Etc. and only hoops heads like us would recognize him. a True STAR FA everyone knows EVERYWHERE, and he ain't comin' to SAC w/o someone of the same caliber.

I'm a big Mitch Richmond fan
and he's one of my favorite 3 Kings of all time (Kevin Martin and Michael Smith are the other 2). That being said Mitch didn't have that kind of charisma, and his playing abilities featured a sour weakness that the Kings did their best to ignore by acquiring players like Williams and Owens who could handle the ball to offset the fact Mitch couldn't. In otherwords Mitch was a NBA junkies star, and not one for the masses to appreciate.

FOR ME. These guys have NO CHARISMA, yet are stars(except Fisher, my bad)! Playboy aint exactly big-time media any longer. You're forgetting the point was CHARISMA. They LACK it, yet have made themselves national celebrities by playing in LARGE markets. Can you ppl not read?

Derek Fisher is well known in LA
He's very well known in LA. And last I checked LA has a couple of people (or about 20 million) living in around on or somewhat close to there.

And fuck you.

Yeah
I don't know what the hell I was saying. Being in a big market team definitely helps, but nobody will be able to tell Jamaal Crawford, Derek Fisher, Lamaar Odom, Luol Deng, Tyrus Thomas, Quentin Richardson, Eddy Curry outside of those markets if you just saw them in the streets.

Winning big is what makes someobdy a face. Being dominant and winning big is what makes somebody a face.

What the hell am I saying? I don't know, maybe I just wanted to put that link of Tim Duncan up. What is going on.... Waking up at 2 am and attempting to start your day isn't healthy for the mind.

Happy Trade Deadline Day Everybody!!!!!!!!!!

OK
A couple of things and I'm going to bed.

First, Vlade may be a man of his word but the reason that he came here is because we offered him the most money. That's what free agents do. They sign for the most money.

Second, we have not had major money to throw around in the free agent market since the year that Divac signed and we traded for Webber. Since that time we have spent our available big dollars on re-signing our players.

Third, Mitch languished here because we sucked, not because he was in Sacramento. San Antonio is no larger than Sacramento but somehow David Robinson, Tim Duncan and company have gotten their due.

Avery Johnson isn't suffering from
a lack of fame from his time in the Alamo City either.

Kudos
to your family enjoying what I can't stand. They're better folk than I, and I mean it. I guess I meant for your GF to represent the everyman, the average Joe, and  apparently he's  not. So I'll put it another way: would the average Joe recognize Avery Johnson off-court?

I've never wondered why it was considered
a cowtown because I don't consider it a cowtown. I don't care what "we" think to begin with. Sac is what it is, and i only call it an evil cowtown because I find the term sorta funny. It was actually Jerry Reynolds, and I've since continued to use it, because I find it absolutely humorous. (I think of Dodge City as a cowtown though.)

Dude he has 4 rings
You don't like my opinions great. I'm good with that. Life is full of disagreement. But don't misstate obvious things (how many times has it been stated that duncan has 4 rings now?) and say stuff that I didn't say. Duncan is well known I agree, but he isn't necessarily a national name because of his commercials or anything like that. He just happens to be the best big man in the NBA since Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Moses Malone and Karl Malone.

Vlade could have signed with a better team
and still got the money.

I was speaking previous to the 'golden years' my bad.

San Antonio CITY is no larger than Sacramento. San Antonio is the 2nd largest city in Texas and 7th largest in America. There are 1.3 MILLION in San Antonio CITY. There's about 1.3 in Sacramento COUNTY.

We sucked because we couldn't get anyone to COME HERE.

If the Kings start winning they will to come,
or want to anyway.

San Antonio MSA had a population of nearly 1.9M.

Sacramento MSA had a population of over 2.1 million.

Based on census data as of 1/1/07.

Pretty even. Slight advantage, Sacramento.

Why do you think Webber, Bibby, and Peja are nationally known?  Simple.  The Kings used to be good and on par with the Spurs. They were nationally televised because they were good, not because they were a big market team.

Duncan was a draft pick on a bad team. So was Peja.

Webber (and Artest and Christie) had baggage, that's why Sac got them.  Bibby was an underperformer (deja vu Shelden Williams) on a bad team so he was tradeable.

God bless you, Corliss. You always played as though you knew how expensive my tickets were. -section214

Ive..
Been in discussion with Section about this previously.

Although we dissagreed, I don't think either of us convinced eachother to change our respective opinion.

I love Sac. But I honestly don't think the big names (players who made the All-Star team that year) will voluntarely sign with the Kings as free agents. I just dont think so.

by Hoops916 on Feb 21, 2008 10:11 PM PST up reply actions

Who gives a shit honestly?
Not to be divisive, since there is plenty of that going on at the moment, but jesus christ what about Kevin Martin? He isn't having an all-star caliber season? Francisco Garcia is quite the jack of all trades isn't he? Hasn't John Salmons proven to be effective when given time? There is plenty of talent that acquiring an OUTSIDE free-agent doesn't really matter, not to mention that the Kings shouldn't overpay for any talent given their recent cap situation and what they're recovering from by doing so.

I don't get this I really don't. Losing Ron Artest decreases the chance a star will come? I don't get that in any way. The Hawks desperately needed a player like Joe Johnson and got him. If they make the playoffs, and they might this season, then isn't Johnson being a 2 time all star justified? Johnson isn't as talented as Artest, but isn't nearly as un-attractive to other teams either. You don't think half the teams in the League wouldn't listen to an offer for Joe Johnson if Atl made him available? If you don't think so you're really stupid.

Wow.
Name-calling really is beneficial ain't it.

Joe Johnson has NOT lifted that team ANYWHERE. Would you trade equal value to get him, a 1st option for a 1st option? Not with his track record. A 3rd option(though a very good one) in PHX, and definitely not a transcending player as the 1st option in ATL. Otherwise, why not make the deal for him w/ Artest and bodies?

that my fav team is full o scrubs, but all of our players are not well-known beyond a regional basis, and usually forgotten pretty easily.

upstaging Bibby
God, I loved watching Beno upstage Bibby tonight. He played the PG position the way it's supposed to be played. And the 18 points was just a bonus.  Many - if not most - of us on this blog felt Beno was the better PG for this team. It was nice to see it validated tonight.  Now, let's hope that he can be consistent.

Artest AND/or FAs
Now that Artest is staying for the year...2years...5yr extention??...do y'all think the majority of studly, upcoming free agents would think that's a benefit in Sac or a deterent?
I'm not so sure on all the salary business but just for arguements sake pretend Artest is extended, like Martin, and Sac can offer a good contract to a top FA...what % will want to come knowing it's "Artest's team". I know money talks but some players may think Ron's too coo coo. Soooo...can Sac win (it all) with Artest & Martin as the Batman & Robin or do y'all hope SAC is renting Artest right now and the brain trust is already preparing for the next deal to present itself (sign-n-trade or whatever)? It seems the fan base is really split down the middle.
My opinion - prepare for another Batman.
