So We Have Good News and We Have Bad News

Good news: Kevin Martin scores a career high 48 points, on 12-23 FGAs and 22-24 FTAs with 6 boards and 1 turnover.

Bad news: Kings lose to the second-worst team in the league, at home, by 8 points.

Why?

  • Brad Miller: 25 minutes, 0 points, 2 assists. No.
  • The bench firepower, Francisco Garcia + Quincy Douby: 31 minutes, 9 points.
  • Minnesota murdered the Kings on the offensive boards: 14 o-rebs in 42 opps. 67% defensive rebounding for the Kings. Awful.
  • Only 11 turnovers in 91 possessions for the Wolves.
  • Craig Smith shot 8-9, Rashad McCants shot 6-11 and 3-4 from three.
The Kings offense was fine, perhaps a little underwhelming in total considering Martin's massive game. (Seriously: 48 points on 23 attempts.)

But good lord that defense... it burns the eyes, it does.

Much the way Martin beat their wings on the first
step, their wings burned all our wings with the first step. Plus, McCants loves playing against the Kings - that shot was burning. Shawes should not have been defending Al Jeff (should he? I thought that's what Williams doth do).

But 48 points on 23? Bejeezlejuicesnizzerwaffers.

Ive
Said it on here before...

Brad Miller is having a good OFFENSIVE year. He hurts the Kings by being such a joke down low and on the defensive end!!! Quite frankly, he's overmatched night in and night out and is essentially a 7ft ragdoll out there. Mikki and him can not coexist!!!! Miller and his soft body need to leave town. Its like nobody has ever told him he's 7ft and has meat on him!! In the words of the old senile man Walton..he is Horrible!!! Absolutely horrible!!

How much is he making again?

by Hoops916 on Mar 7, 2008 10:03 PM PST   0 recs

I think
Miller had the Woodland flu for this game.

by Kfan in Korea on Mar 7, 2008 10:08 PM PST   0 recs

I think....
that he is just a flat out 1 dimentional player!! He has good offensive shooting/passing abilities, which tend to appeal to the untrained eye (myself included at times)!!

But when you have a 7ft Center who cant play defense. Gets continually manhandled by his opponent and is afraid to go down low and play any type of post game, that hurts your team!!!

Unless of course you have a beast at the 4. Which we dont!

One of these 2 better not be starting next year! There is NO way in hell GP will roll out this pathetic 4-5 combo to start next year!

by Hoops916 on Mar 7, 2008 10:17 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I agree
2 soft 7 footers is not a good thing. Not sure what GP is going to be able to do about it though. No 19 year old we get in the draft is going to come in and be a force down low, and I don't see anyone trading one to us for what we have to offer. Maybe we'll get lucky.

19 yo force down low
Kevin Love, if we're lucky.

by thekangarooster on Mar 8, 2008 12:48 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Force down low in college does not always
equal force down low in the NBA. At least not for a couple of years. Gotta figure on a year or 2 for a 19 year old to fill out, learn the league etc.

If we're looking for someone to replace Miller and/or Moore in the starting lineup next season, and I thing we should be, I think it's pretty unlikely that we get someone to come in and start right away thru the draft.

See Bynum, Durant, Hawes for a few examples of guys who need/needed a couple of years to adjust.

Look at Horford, probably the best rookie big this year: 9.6 pts. 10 rbs 1 blk 13.8 PER. and he's 21. Someone like him, could replace Moore, but that doesn't move Miller out of the lineup.

by Kfan in Korea on Mar 8, 2008 1:26 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Agreed
A force down low in college does not always equal the same in the NBA...

However, Just having a "body" down low will help the Kings in the half court set. Especially Beno, who must get frustrated not having a low post presence on hiss squad.

When you have 2 7ftrs who pussyfoot around the perimeter it lowers the percentages of easy buckets for your team. It essentially turn you into a jump-shooting team with little room for varience if and when you have matchup advantages/disadvantages.

I'm sure GP is well aware of this issue with the Kings big men, and saw a "healthy" SAR as being the Kings answer at the 4 a few years back. Brad's inability to be able to play as a Big kills the Kings. (It funny because I always read on here how Bibby needed to leave because he wasn't a true PG. I dont read the same criticism about Brad and the fact that he isnt a true Big??) This flawed style of play by Miller would have been masked by a healthy SAR, who can open the floor up by being able to knock down a 15fter as well as posting up. But whats done is done (and yes, that was meant to describe SAR's knees)

That being said, I'm not sure we need to find this low post "presence" in the draft. I'd like to, but I'm sure that there are servicible bigs around the league who could fill the 4 (or 5) for the Kings and do a better job than our current "BIGS"

by Hoops916 on Mar 8, 2008 8:41 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Decent Bigs
Check out this list of free agents for this summer. Not too encouraging, especially at the big positions. If Brand and J. O'Neal don't terminate their contracts, Kurt Thomas becomes the best unrestricted FA at power forward (Holy Hydra, Batman!). Plus there is the issue that as of this moment we have enough money to spend on (maybe) one MLE next year, and we may need that for Udrih.

You are right, hoops. Any big drafted out of the 12 spot (or thereabouts) would probably provide little help for next year, and GP will spend the pick on the best player, regardless of need.

Can anyone figure out a scenario where we won't suck at the 4 next year? (Note- Pookey's Miller trade would have been an appropriate answer before the trade deadline passed.)

Given Our Means
Biedrins might be someone to look at on that list. Probably cost about $5 million a year.

That may be money currently targeted at Beno, which takes you back to drafting a point guard and pointing towards 2009 and beyond.

I also like Josh Childress depending on what happens with Artest.

ESPN Headline
Martin's 48 prove too few as Kings fall to Wolves"

I am going to take this as something positive from the game.  ESPN rarely places any King's highlights on the front page. Plus, the wording of the headline tells me they are starting to understand that Kevin is really a star (as we all know, the game is meaningless).  Its the rest of the Kings team that needs some work.

Wait....Why is everybody clapping? Everyone around me is clapping.... I guess I should be clapping too... GO LAKERS!!! I hate living in So Cal

Goes
to show how far we have dropped. A few years back when we had our squads you couldnt turn on ESPN and not see some type of "Wlliams (or Bibby later on) and Webb/Divac story. Its truly sad to see your team go from the media darlings of the leage to "whatever" it is we are now!!

Just be glad we aernt the Supersonics fans!!

by Hoops916 on Mar 7, 2008 10:40 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Not that I'm personally offended
But if I was a Supes fan I totally would be. You  might want to re-think that kind of statement in the future sir.

by pookeyguru on Mar 8, 2008 3:06 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Why
would I want to rethink a comment like that in the future???

I sure as hell am glad I'm not a supersonics fan. I have nothing against the squad, as a matter of fact I somewhat enjoy watching their games on leaguepass when there isnt a marquee game on.

But the fact remains sir, the City is about to lose the team. (Regardless of the reason or whomever is to blame) It is always sad/depressing/infuriating ect ect when your hometown team up and leaves. (Thankfully, I've never been in a City where it happens but I can only imagine)

What in the hell is there to be glad about?

Welcome to training camp 2008-09
The fourth quarter belonged to Hawes, Sheldon Williams, Garcia, and to a lesser extent Quincy Douby.  Let the evaluations begin.  The only question is whether this is the new policy or simply the coach's reaction to a pathetic attempt against the league's second worst team.

Theus Calls Out Miller and ?
From the AP game story:

"We have a couple of guys around here who aren't playing hard anymore, that's too bad, that's very disappointing," Kings coach Reggie Theus said.

I Guess It's Miller, Mikki and Salmons
http://www.sacbee.com/100/story/770190.html

Theus - who was without Ron Artest for the second consecutive game due to a sore right foot - sat starters Brad Miller, Mikki Moore and John Salmons for the fourth quarter and stood his ground at the podium afterward while questioning his team's effort.

"When you look at the effort-based things, the one thing that's been consistent (this season) is that we've had effort," Theus said. "We've got a couple guys around here (who) aren't playing hard anymore. That's too bad. It's very disappointing."

The defensive effort was again atrocious, as the Kings allowed 100-plus points for the 10th consecutive game and for the 19th time in the last 22 games. T-wolves Ryan Gomes, Al Jefferson, Rashad McCants and Craig Smith combined for a balanced 78 points as Minnesota shot 51.8 percent from the field.

"(The defense) is on (the Kings') shoulders," Theus said. "It's definitely on their shoulders because I've seen them play defense. I've seen what they do when they want to get after it."

Martin had an anticlimactic outing, scoring a career-high 48 points on 12-for-23 shooting to set an Arco Arena record and a Sacramento-era Kings record for most points in a regulation game. His 22 free throws converted and 24 attempted also set career highs and Sacramento-era and Arco Arena records.

With no one questioning his effort, Martin said he wholeheartedly agreed with Theus' opinion of the team's lack of desire.

"We've definitely got to get back to playing hard," Martin said. "Whoever it is who's out there on the court, we've got to find some chemistry. And whichever group is playing hard, he should go with it.

"It's deflating as a team, but I think that we have some guys who want to play. And whoever wants to get out there and play - like Shelden (Williams) and Spencer (Hawes) played hard tonight. So whoever wants to get out there and play, just give it all you've got, and let's finish it out. ... I definitely agree with Reggie."

The T-Wwolves used a 13-4 run from late in the first quarter to early in the second quarter to go up 35-28. Their lead grew to 57-55 at halftime after a Jefferson jumper capped a 9-2 run to end the second quarter.

The boos that had eluded the Kings until recently came from the announced crowd of 13,990 near the end of the third quarter, when Salmons held the ball in one-on-one style and was stripped by McCants. The Kings - who had 16 turnovers and shot just 45.1 percent overall - trailed 80-71 at the end of the third and never pulled within closer than six points in the fourth.

"I think that teams come in here who are bad and they think we're a crappy team," Theus said. "I gave that excuse (of playing down to competition earlier in the season), but I'm not giving it anymore. ... I think teams are coming in here now, and they're not seeing the fire that we had earlier."

CoolCat!
I 100% agree wtih your post.  Those are the exact thre players I thought Theus was talking about.  I am also VERY glad to hear Martin didnt hold back with his criticism.  He needs to start showing some type of leadership.

Your post didnt even include your signature random side comment that spurs a tangent argument.  Well done good sir!

I don't think any of those words are CoolCat's. I'm pretty sure he just copied and pasted most of the Bee column. That damn Sam Amick stirring up trouble, getting CC complimented.

At CC: probably not a good idea to copy that much of an article. You linked which is good, but you left little reason to follow the link.

It is possible
that you don't twist the article's meaning around to suit your purpose, AND edit some of the article down with a link & a select quote. (It might also help if you learn how to blockquote and link since you do such much of both.)

Maybe like this:
Theus sits Miller, Moore and Salmons for lack of effort. Martin backs Theus

Theus - who was without Ron Artest for the second consecutive game due to a sore right foot - sat starters Brad Miller, Mikki Moore and John Salmons for the fourth quarter and stood his ground at the podium afterward while questioning his team's effort.

With no one questioning his effort, Martin said he wholeheartedly agreed with Theus' opinion of the team's lack of desire.

BTW here is the page that shows how to link and block quote. When Pookey linked it some time in the past I bookmarked it.

Couple=two, not three.
If he meant three, he would have said "a few".

I'd guess the couple Theus referred to would be Artest and Miller. Since they played 27 and 22 minutes tonight respectively.

From listening to the pre & post game shows tonight, and reading the various articles over the weekend, I'm not sure anybody, including Ron Artest, believe he had an injury severe enough to keep him out of the missed games.

From samick's blog titled "Ron responds"

On his absences from the last two games...

"Before the first day, I wasn't even going to shoot, and I just thought it'd be better if I rest my leg and rest my foot. I thought it'd be better if I just let the guys go get the win. I thought we'd be able to win still.
Then yesterday, we were playing against one of the worst teams in the league and I just thought it'd be better if I just rest my foot because we've got a tough schedule coming up. The games we have coming up, to me, were more important. We've got all the teams who are trying to get homecourt advantage (in the playoffs). It's still an important season for them. It's still an important season for us."

Bold sentence is my emphasis, not Amick's.

I wish I had TiVo, because I would love to get the exact wording of Reggie's pre/post game interviews for tonight.

---
Change of subject.  Hilarious that the one post of CC's you agreed with doesn't even contain his own thoughts.

-----
Second change.  Have fun at work tomorrow!  At least you only had to suffer for a few days before getting back at your co-workers!

>>I'd guess the couple Theus referred to would be Artest and Miller. Since they played 27 and 22 minutes tonight respectively.<<

I guess you missed it:

"Theus - who was without Ron Artest for the second consecutive game due to a sore right foot -sat starters Brad Miller, Mikki Moore and John Salmons for the fourth quarter and stood his ground at the podium afterward while questioning his team's effort.

That said, I think it is great the Kings won tonight with Artest riding pine at the end. They have to get over the "we can't win when key players are missing" excuse. Someone is always going to be missing, but there is enough talent to win with.

You tire me
You tire me. Your posts seriously tire me.  Your posts tire me.  Do you get it yet?  Your posts are really tiring?

You bring near to nothing to any discussion.  Do you feel a secret thrill by being acknowledged by yet another response to your trolling posts?

Woohoo! You got a response to your post! You roXXors!  Yeah, baby!

I missed nothing; can you say the same?
RoCk oN, dUdE!!!!!!!!!111!!!

For the record, I know media exposure is a great thing for a website but it can be really bad for the community. It draws trolls.

Peripherally, I doubt that your time here at StR has reflected well on your own website...if it's yours.  I know that I have no interest in anything you're selling based on your posts here.

No, I didn't respond to your comment or defend my position, yet again.  There is no reason because your mind is a closed book.

Woohoo! You got a response to your post! You roXXors!  Yeah, baby!

Feel the thrill! Feel it, own it!

Did I mention that your posts are tiring?  Not because they are thought provoking, just because they are incredibly inane and based on the latest article you can find to support your opinion.  Instead of reading the news or links, try watching a game or five.  That's what most fans do.
