BREAKING NEWS: Musselman Arrested on DUI Charges

Breaking news from KCRA 3 News:

Eric Musselman was arrested at 2:15 this morning and booked on DUI charges. He blew a .11 and he gets his day in court on November 20. (No games that day, towards the end of a homestand.) He's been released. The incident happened at K and 30th.

Nothing online anywhere as of yet. Mike TeSelle just broke it on the morning news.

I know last night was a nice win, Coach, but geez. Not the best thing for fans of the Kings - and fans of Coach Muss - to wake up to.

More as the story develops and my weekend plans allow. Please update in the comments if you see anything.

Update [2006-10-21 12:8:57 by TZ]: Here's the county sheriff's log, with Musselman's name a little ways down. Looks like he spent less than an hour at the station.

Update [2006-10-21 16:26:29 by TZ]: Geoff Petrie has made a statement, expressing the franchise's disappointment but not saying anything about a suspension. Sam Amick from The Bee says Musselman had two women and one man - all unidentified - in the car with him, and he cut off a driver on K, leading to the stop by an officer and the subsequent Breathalyzer test and arrest. Musselman will talk to the media Sunday morning. I expect a circus.

This was a stupid, stupid mistake by Musselman, just like it's a stupid, stupid mistake for anyone who drinks and drives. I think he deserves whatever punishment he gets, even if it means he has to be in the slammer for a weekend and miss a few games. I don't think Musselman or the team would accept this kind of behavior from the team's players, and I certainly know the league isn't going to accept this kind of behavior, so maybe a short suspension is in order. I'm not going to object to much. Drunk driving is stupid, and I think Musselman would agree with me.

This is a pretty sh*tty day for Kings fans.

Musselman Arrested on DUI Charges
This is especially bad news considering the amount of very young men in the NBA, including, obviously, the Kings. How can he - with any credibility - speak to young players about making good choices/decisions.

One thing is for certain now: he certainly will be able to speak with credibility about the consequences of stupidity.

p.s. For those of you who do not live in mid/down town or in the greater Sacramento area, please note that the area he was coming from is choked with taxi's at 2:00 AM.  There is no excuse for drinking and driving.

Re:Musselman Arrested on DUI Charge
That's an extremely bad omen to start off the season. In Oakland A's fanville, we had to deal with Esteban Loaiza's drunk driving mishap during the summer, and the guy really hasn't lived it down.

I never would have expected this from the coach. It should be interesting to see how he disciplines players who make stupid mistakes all season long, given this incident.

Re: Muss should still have player support.
Either way, this obviously hurts Muss' image a bit, sort of considering his situation in Golden State and the fact he is now divorced. Either way, I think Muss has done a great job up to this point and I think the players still respect him. If he loses that much cred with the players because of this, then the players are mentally soft as well. If this was a frequent recurrence, than that'd be bad. If Artest got into trouble again than I'd be really pissed. Right now Im just a bit stunned and disappointed.

To start, this isn't a direct stabb at the writer.  I've heard a lot of things like this today.  There really isn't an excuse for drinking and driving period.  It shouldn't matter if you're downtown or in the country.  This being said, I also realize that we all make mistakes and we've all done something we weren't suppost to.  It could be something small like lying or something bigger like stealing or drugs ect. We've all done things that we shouldn't have.  We are also all coaches in a sense.  If you have children, co-workers, if you have ever taught or tutored, you at some point of time have to be a coach.  Every player on that team is human and has made mistakes on and off the court and I am positive they will still follow Coach Musselmen into the season and play hard for him.

The true problem for the kings will be when and if he is convicted.  Changing head coaches mid season will most likely be a hard adjustment for the team and can dramaticlly impact the style of play and who is playing.  Coach Musselman seemed honest and upfront about his mistake, i think we should let the law run its course and focus on winning the season.  Like it or not he is our coach and unless you are Geoff or the Maloofs you truely have no choice in what happens.  Being angry at him isn't going to help his, or our teams situation.

Don't care about DUI's
Ok, it happened, now get over it. Unless you have never made a mistake in judgement (yes I know that there are perfect people out there, they will even tell you that they are).
It is unfortunate and obviously does not set a good example, but truthfully, I dont really care. Unlike most people, I don't think the most critical thing going on downtown is drunk driving.

When everyone is perfect in this world I will understand the hype and fanfare that every mistake is given. Does this coach's dui affect me? NOT AT ALL. Tough break for him, with fines and penalties and crap that he will have to go through,(not to mention the public outcry)he will more than pay the piper. If only our law enforcement officers cared so much about arresting the drug dealers that stand in the street in broad daylight in oak park.

Re: Don't care about DUI's
I agree that drug dealers deserve to be punished. But that's a straw man argument. Drunk driving is stupid and wrong.

You don't have to be perfect to call a spade a spade. I think it's fairly agreed upon in this world that drunk drivers should be punished.

Straw man, yes
But I agree with dccamp's greater point, which is how over-the-top the level of angst is in the local media on this event. The intensity of the spotlight, in my opinion, doesn't jive with the intensity of the crime.

This story led off the local news all weekend, seeing the screen crawls about Musselman's press conference during the Sunday football games, and seeing Musselman apologize to Kings fans (why was that necessary?) It's completely ridiculous.

Getting a DUI in California these days is a hard deal.  The penalties are stiff, and he'll be dealing with the repercussions for some time. Shouldn't that be sufficient from a community standpoint?

Re: Straw man, yes
Yeah. But I still hold it's not hypocritical to call someone an idiot for drinking and driving.
