Game Thread #1 - @ Minnesota

Update [2006-11-1 18:49:33 by TZ]: According to some folks on the radio - broadcaster Jim Kozimor and one of the Maloof brothers - Mike Bibby might play tonight. A message board is discussing it. I am not a doctor, and I haven't seen a thing anywhere perhaps this message board and one email from a corroborating radio listener. So, yeah. Grain of salt.

Update #2 [2006-11-1 19:50:37 by TZ]: Mike Bibby is starting, according to Gary Gerould on the radio. Wow.

Oh glorious day, another NBA season is here.

Last night, we got an intriguing double-header to start things in exciting fashion. The Bulls were literally insane on defense and the Lakers played a flawless second-half without Kobe. I knew the Lakers were going to be a threat this season, and I think everyone else realizes now, too.

Today, everyone else plays. Golden State tries to work Jason Richardson back in while trying to knock off the Lakers, and the Clippers begin their quest to stay above sea level for a second straight season against last place Phoenix. (Sounds nice, huh?)

Our Kings, of course, are in Minnesota. Last season, Bonzi Wells saved the day once and the Wolves took the other two contests. All the games amounted to defensive struggles - the teams combined to shoot 44 percent in the three games. In the one match during the Artest era, the Wolves shot 48 percent as Kevin Garnett went nuts, scoring 37 points in 38 minutes.

Scoring will likely again be the issue for the Kings. They had trouble getting shots to fall against Minnesota last season, and they had Mike Bibby for all of those games. Minnesota finished 11th in the league in defense, giving up 104.7 points per 100 possessions. (League average was 106.1.)

On the other side of the court, Minnesota's offense scares no one - at least until Randy Foye can prove himself at this level and until Mike James can prove last year wasn't a statistical fluke. The Kings have to imagine they can clamp down on Wolves not named Garnett, with Ricky Davis posing the biggest threat of tossing up a big line.

My guess is that the Kings will try to push the tempo, partly to avoid having to test the Bibby-less halfcourt offense against Minnesota's solid defense, and partly to cover up Ronnie Price's inexperience in running an offense. The Kings, despite being one of the least athletic teams in the league, were still one of the fastest last season (9th in pace for the season). Replacing Wells with Kevin Martin in the starting lineup won't hurt that, but it will take some time to see how Eric Musselman's pressure defense and free-ish offense will affect the team's pace.

All that said, who knows what the f*ck to expect? It's the first game!

It is a 5p start on News10 for the locals. And as always, remember that these threads are the place for all of your pre-, during, and post-game comments.

Let's go Kings!

Re: Game Thread #1 - @ Minnesota
About 4 minutes and change left.  King are falling a part on offense. And when the need some scoring, they pull Reef and leave in KT. Makes no sense. If I'm the Wolves and the game is close going down the stretch, I'm fouling KT when he's got ball.

4:27 - 81 to 75 Wolves

Re: Game Thread #1 - @ Minnesota
Some absolutely horrible coaching and playing down the stretch.  You can't let a team go several minutes without scoring while at the same time turning the ball over 5 or 6 times in a row without calling a time-out.  The momentum changed, and the coach never did a thing to try and stop it.

The Kings offense is pathetic and has been for the past 4 games.

Re: Game Thread #1 - @ Minnesota
Did somebody tell them that turnovers don't count towards the final score? They sure were acting like they did. But if it's one thing, it's totally not that new slick ball or anything.

These new rules are going to take a while to get used to. 2 shots of clear path fouls? I looked down for a second and Bibby got ejected. The question is, did Joey Crawford have to change his officiating style at all after they announced the crack down on chronic complainers, or did he just laugh maniacally and say something to Mr. Bigglesworth about everything falling into plan?

Re: Game Thread #1 - @ Minnesota
Lets face it. If this is a sign of what is to come we are in for a long season. There seemed to be no game plan and certainly no execution. Artest took way too many shots. Bibby should have waited to come back. The senseless fouls of Thomas. The non- existence of Miller. Lets hope things improve in a hurry. Minnesota is predicted to be at the bottom. The only bright spot was with this TIVO you can eliminate about 70% of Grant Napear.

Re: Game Thread #1 - @ Minnesota
Somebody explain to me again why starting KT makes sense. I was buying the logic for a bit, hoping that we'd have enough offense to make up for him.  We don't. KT on the floor means the Kings are playing 4 on 5 on the offensive end.

I've made no secret of lacking fandom for KT. He didn't prove anything at all in the pre-season, and game 1 was as we could have expected.

Re: Game Thread #1 - @ Minnesota
As I mentioned on my own blog: Kings Open 2006-07 Season Flat, on the road, against a powerful conference foe, the Kings can hardly afford to see their team leader exit early, and they can't expect to win games by missing more than 5 out of every 8 shots. I hope it was just early-season jitters, and not, instead, a sign of things to come.

I tried to listen to the game on the way home from the office, and 1140 is just too damn impacted by those stations around it here in the Bay Area. I could hear the chop-chop-chop of good ol' static, in between the team being down 28-21 and tying it up 3 times, but never getting over the top. It looks like their early shooting woes didn't get much better by game end.

Going 81-1!
