Game #8: at Golden State

After last night's win over the Memphis Grizzlies, the Kings share first place with those NBA giants, the LA Clippers. But we should keep in mind it's early in the season, and the Kings aren't the only team turning heads in Northern California. While Sacramento has won four straight, going unbeaten at Arco, the Warriors have done equally well, winning four contests at the newly named Oracle Arena. One of those streaks will end tonight.

Meanwhile, a lot of eyes will be on the coaches on the sidelines, with the ageless Don Nelson going Back to the Future in his return to the Warriors, and Eric Musselman taking on his former team for the first time.

But don't forget that neither of those guys is going to throw on a jersey, for which we are all eternally grateful. Instead, we get to see the "Tru Warrior taking on the True Warriors", we get to see the Kings battle on national television for the second consecutive night, we get to see Kevin Martin and Mike Bibby try to keep up their torrid pace - to see them knock down threes more easily than picking up strikes in bumper bowling.

Given my precarious situation of needing to rely on other people (I hate that!), we're opening up the game thread early. With the game on TV tonight, I know we're going to have some serious real-time commentary here on Sactown Royalty. I'll join as soon as I can. If I'm here by the game's start, you'll know things went well. If not, then say a curse word for me. My heart will be here.

Let's go Kings!

Re: Game #8: at Golden State
The Warriors are 5 point favorites.

Projected Starters are:

Kings
PG: Mike Bibby
SG: Kevin Martin
SF: Ron Artest
PF: Kenny Thomas
C: Shareef Abdur-Rahim

Warriors
PG: Baron Davis
SG: Monta Ellis
SF: Jason Richardson
PF: Mickael Petrius
C: Andris Biedrins

Richardson is coming back from injury, starting in their last game against the Raptors, playing 35 minutes but shooting only 4-13 from the field.

As a side note: what's the deal with my not being able to watch Warriors games on FSN: Bay Area in Sacramento? I get BDSSP reruns instead. That bugs me, and if anyone could tell me why, I'd really like to know.

It's ON
Fantasy Junkie here, I help run Golden State of Mind (the SBNation Warriors blog).

The Kings are going to get hammered tonight in a high scoring affair (I'll probably regret that statement, but it's all in good fun). 123-109 Warriors. Expect little defense, except from that crazy fellow on your squad, and a lot of easy buckets.

If you haven't been paying attention to the Warriors, watch out for Monta Ellis (lightning fast) and Andris Biedrins. Both are young guns who have been playing well. Maybe not as well as KevMartin, but definitely stepping it up this year.

Also, feel free to post on our site and talk trash to the Warrior fans who frequent our site. But just like Sactown Royalty, you'll need a login to post. Trust me, it's worth it. For at least 4 games a year, you'll get to talk trash to us Warrior fans about how we haven't made the playoffs since Chris Webber's rookie year.

Re: It's ON
Dear Fantasy Junkie,

On behalf of Sactown Royalty and its visitors, we respect your interest in the game, your knowledge of the Warriors, your blogging abilities, and proper fandom. However, we must kindly disagree on a number of aspects.

  1. There is no reason to trash talk a franchise that has no worth. One cannot get worked up over something that lacks value.

  2. The Kings do not intend to get hammered. They also have been sporting a new wrinkle called "defense" (last night's game aside). This will not result in anything resembling 120+ points by either club.

  3. By crazy fellow, surely you don't mean Ron Artest? He of the perfect gentlemanly civility as a member of the esteemed Sacramento Kings franchise?

FJ, there is something about the Kings that will forever reign supreme over the Warriors. It's called faith, tradition, continuity and exuberance. Even when I lived in Berkeley, it was the Kings I followed, and not the hapless Warriors. Not even after I have spent generations in the Bay Area will I ever become a Warriors fan. The team lacks spirit, soul and a winning tradition. We hope someday you may find happiness.

All the best.

Re: It's ON
louismg, I have no doubt that the Kings are a better franchise than the Warriors. They have 2 excellent owners and, recently, a winning tradition. They've been to the Conference Finals and heck, the playoffs. But what the Warriors and Kings do as franchises is out of my control and most fans control. As far as the fans, I do not know many Kings fans, but I know that Warrior fans are some the best and most loyal in the league.  There are not too many franchises with fans that stick with a team after being as bad as the Warriors have been. We stick with the team through thick and thin, never jumping ship. Say what you want about the franchise, but as far as fans go, we're top notch.

You don't have to talk trash on our site, but I was merely trying to have some fun and foster a sense of continuity between our two sites and perhaps carry it across the SB Nation basketball sites as a whole. But it's up to you to perhaps not talk trash on our site, but leave a comment.

Re: Game #8: at Golden State
I don't understand Muss' philosophy when the team is playing badly.  At the very least, there should have been two more time outs called in that quarter.  You simply can't allow that sort of effort or lack thereof. He should have been all over those guys.

Oh, and Ron is back to jacking up crap from the outside.  They got to value the ball; slow it down; and get back on d.

Re: Game #8: at Golden State
He has about 5 turnovers in a quarter and a half and Muss had Reef on the bench????  At least, he just got yanked.  If he isn't being a defensive monster and owning the boards, his butt has to be glued to the bench.  He has the some of the worst court vision I've seen.

Bibby offense has been bad, but sometimes shots don't fall. But it's his defense that has been offensive. Last night and tonight, he has reverted back to his bullfighter defense.

why aren't more warriors....
pickin' themselves off the floor?  How can we let people waltz through the lane with nary a finger laid on them.  Somebody needs to send a message. At the very least foul so the game is slowed down.

Also, what don't they get about rotating to the weak-side three point shooter? The Warriors have NO inside game. All they can do is go to the hole or shoot 3 pointers.  Figure it out!

Even Ron...
isn't playing great d.  Everybody looks a step slow. (It's the back-end of a back-to-back.)

They will need a great effort to have a chance. At the very least, they MUST:

  • limit the turnovers to no more 5 - 6
  • slow the game down by going inside out and moving the ball side-to-side and then taking high % shots. (thereby, limiting the Warriors fast break game)
-make the Warriors shoot free throws rather than giving away lay-ups.

Even then, it's tough to win on the road playing two nights in a row.

Re: Even Ron...
It's especially rough on the back-end of two consecutive games to play when they are both such up-tempo contests. It could be the Warriors anticipated this and were encouraged to run, run, run.

Charles Barkley: Kings not a playoff team
And if they keep playing D like they have in the last two games, I'm inclined to agree. If you're a "defensive team" you dont let people get layups on you like that. You dish out some hard fouls to make 'em think twice about charging down the lane like the warriors have been.

Marv Albert loves talking about it.

So do we really believe his wrist is hurting him any more than it did last night when Bibby scored 32? Is this just a small sample size? I think if Bibby scored 20, we wouldn't hear about it, but with him shooting 3/11, it must be the wrist. 5/11 or 6/11 and he's "recovered".

A miracle!

Apparently Brad only shaves when he doesn't have to play basketball.

Martin for 3! Finally. Now 1-13 on 3-balls tonight. Kings within 10. For now.

Ron
is an extremely undisciplined offensive player.  Can get away with it at home, but not on the road when offensive efficiency is paramount.  Kevin Martin needs to be taking every shot the Kings can get him.  How do they go 2 - 3 positions without him even touching the f*cking ball?  Again, that's coaching.

Re: Ron
That last play was a perfect example. Artest gets the ball, and never looks to pass. He forced the ball up and was lucky to get fouled. I'm glad the Kings know how to make their free throws...

97-90 GSW.

Warriors are hitting their shots again
And the game may be over. 103-92 GS.

why isn't francisco on the court?
He may be our best perimeter defender. (Not the best all-around - that's obviously Ron.) So, we have 2 totally uncontested 3 pointers in a row. How can you just lay back and let these jack those up? At least run at them.

Muss has coached a very bad game. Nice home streak. But good coaches manage games on the road. He hasn't yet this season. Jury is still out. (Chicago was lucky.)

Re: Game #8: at Golden State
And the Kings' comeback is thwarted. We're down by 11 with 5 1/2 to play. It's always been my feeling that if you have to make up a point a minute (basketball or football), you should start to get worried. 2 points per minute? That's bordering on requiring the other team's collapse.

103-92.

bibby scares me
as a Warrior fan I hate seeing Bibby in the game because he's got that rep for being so clutch. no lead is safe with him in the game.

Re: Game #8: at Golden State
Some stats: GSW is at 60% shooting, the Kings are at 43%. You won't win with that differential, even if you make all your free throws.

My proposal
K-9 and Jason Hart for an athletic shotblocker. Theres got to be one available somewhere.

based on road performances
this Kings team is not a playoff team yet.  They lack offensive discipline.  The turnover situation has yet to be cleaned up. And the shot selection is not good. Regarding defense, they are better than last year, but the last two games make me think the first few games were a fluke. You can't be a "defensive" team and let guys walk to the basket like they have the past two games. You simply have to foul and pound people. Also, the weak side rotation has been weak the entire year. Rotate the ball side-to-side on the Kings and you get whatever shot you want.

Still, we're 5 - 3.  Not bad, but it's still all home cookin'.

Re: based on road performances
Your comments on the defense are similar to my thinking. I want to believe that "The Musselman Era" around defense is real, but this game is a shock to that system. Way too many open shots and fast breaks, and "Olé" type defense.

Re: Game #8: at Golden State
And the Kings break 100!

What - you're saying that's not going to be enough tonight?

And you're telling me we've been outplayed the entire game and haven't led at any point?

Okay. I get it. 113-101, with just over a minute to play.

Don't forget that Fantasy Junkie predicted 123-109. Final score? 117-105. Not so bad for that guy. (Golf clap)

Re: Game #8: at Golden State
Snaps to GS, Nellie and Davis for a good game. They smoked us and obviously confused the hell out of Muss as to how to handle two nights in a row playing gunning teams. The guys looked tired and that is not a good sign so early in the season. The combined minutes the starters played tonight and last night are crazy with KMart and Ron at about 85 each.

Thank goodness we have a couple of days off until the Spurs!!!

Yes...but about the Chuckster....
he said last season that the Kings wouldn't make the playoffs & look how that turned out even with the 0-3 start....

As for his Trotsky-ess Spursky ramblings; he may be a hall-of-famer but he's totally in Pop's pocket, consider the evidence...

Why take anything he says at face value...but maybe this has a good side:The Kings can be back under the radar again....let everone think the Warriors are all that....

(Warrior fans...you're praying every day that the Red baron stays healthy, right?)
