Artest is Destroying This Team

A week ago, I called Ron Artest the most valuable King. And the numbers don't lie - his presence makes everyone better.

But he is killing this team.

He's begging to get Mike Bibby traded, or to get traded himself. His actions speak louder than any demands could. He is fighting a battle in the shadows, trying to take this for his own. The "I guess I have to guard the point guard, too" comment. The play at the end of the Utah game. Taking himself out of the lineup at the last minute last night. It's all a push for power, whether Ron-Ron is doing it consciously or not. It's his way to both show the powers that he is the most important piece and that he is in control.

And it's working.

The Kings won't dare suspend or otherwise punish Artest for his bullsh*t manuever last night. If I were in the position, I doubt I'd punish him. They've lost control. If things don't go exactly the way he wants them to go, all he has to do is yank his injury string and sit. And the Kings are then virtually guaranteed to lose.

I thought Eric Musselman would be a disciplinarian where Rick Adelman was lax. I thought Artest would realize his next big contract depended on being the classiest of guys on the court and in the lockerroom. I thought Bibby - not a leader by any stretch of the imagination - would cede control of the on-court Kings to Artest.

I was wrong on all three counts.

Musselman seems like he's trying to be even more of a player's coach than Adelman was. Maybe he's overcompensating for his unfair Golden State reputation, maybe he thinks he can juggle these incredible personalities. At this point, it's clear he can't. Adelman, I'm afraid to say, did.

Artest is too shortsighted, too caught up in right this minute to see the forest. Summer 2008 is a long time from now, and Ron-Ron can't even possibly be counting his free agent dollars. He's too busy counting his shot attempts and making sure everyone knows he's the biggest rooster in this pen.

Bibby has chosen an odd time to puff out his feathers. To his credit, he has sucked up his pride on his sucky start, not playing the injury card or blaming the slump on anything other than a slump and the overall stagnant offense. But making a big deal about the ball being out of your hands? Taking offense on statements from a guy you rib harder than anyone? (See: The "blacked out" comment.) Please. Yeah, Ron's infuriating. He also almost singlehandedly got you into the playoffs last year. He's the face of the franchise, for better or worse. Deal with it.

Because Musselman can't control his team, Artest can't control his mouth, and Bibby can't deal with his hurt feelings, this team is in a freefall, and Geoff Petrie is the one who has to fix it. That may mean moving Bibby, it may mean asking Elgin Baylor if he's still interested in Ron. If neither of those options are permeable, maybe it means sitting Artest down for a game or two to try to wrestle control of the roster back. I doubt it would work, but at some point (February 22), it becomes the only option.

We knew what we were getting into when we advocated for the Ron-Ron trade. That bitter fruit, it's ripe.

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
I completely agree - Geoff Petrie needs to get out a can of Whoop-ass and a jar of Do-right and straighten this BS out before the entire team (if it hasn't already) implodes.

I have a golden rule: you never criticize other parents because tomorrow it may be your kid who is being a moron. You can't really compare parenting with running an NBA franchise but there are similarities here. When the kids get out of hand things will spiral to the pit of doom unless you nip it and establish control immediately. "No one touch anyone. No one say a word. I brought you into this team - I can take you out. You just bought yourself another week's grounding Mister. Want more?" There will be pouting, sulking and general spoiled brat reactions but if Geoff doesn't do it now then it will only get worse. The painful effort will have lasting rewards.

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
So do we all agree than Ron needs to go? I thought I was among the minority who did not want him here anymore. Can somebody start a poll or something so we can get an idea of what other Kings fans think about Ron-ron

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
i am very against trading artest at this point.

if you do, the very identity of what this team is trying to be is gone just like that i say trade bibby and reef or miller for a shot blocker

otherwise this team needs to work it out because ron-ron is the team

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
Despite my diary du jour, I am the only one so far who voted to keep Ron. 1. When he "wants" to play he is damn good. 2. I think the process of kicking his tush into line (if it can be done) would show the team that Muss and/or Geoff are in charge. Muss needs to flex his Mussles and asert himself. Perfect opportunity to bury his alter ego - EMush.

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
ships will sink.  as i advocated in my first post (earlier in the week) the Kings ought blow this bitch up.  everyone but Martin is on the block.  with the dearth of good point guard play in the NBA, particularly out east, Mike Bibby is valuable to many teams out there.  We should take advantage of the teams that lost out on the AI sweepstakes and take offers for Artest.  GPetrie should be on the phone with Baylor over at Clip headquarters and trying to pry loose Livingston (doubt it) or some combination of Quinton Ross, Corey Maggette, and draft picks.  The main thing though:  the Kings need to get fresh legs in the front court, young legs.  we need players who can defend the hoop.  Bibby has always suffered more than who needs to for his D because he has never had a Camby or Chandler back there covering his ass.  Shareef must go as well.

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
Why isnt Kevin Martin wrestling for control. He deserves it.

Rebuild this mess and lets have the next generating: Oden-Martin combo. Hopefully Artest will with the team when the combo comes to fruition

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
i saw an interview with muss on the jim rome show and he said they had a "state of the team" meeting and judging by the game last night, bibby was told to keep a lid on the amount of shots he will take, looks like muss found his bread and butter to be salmons and martin on offense.

all they need is an interior presence and i think this team will be fine

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
I read in the Sac Bee that Rome made some comment while talking with Muss in the practice facility that Bibby stopped all his interviews and left the other day.  Its starting to get ugly between Ron and Bibby, and I cant really defend either at this point.

Has there ever been a team where you cant defend the actions of either of your star players?

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
Ron Artest's honeymoon in Sacramento is over.  He's a horrible offensive player and not nearly the defensive star I thought he was.

Does anyone really believe Ron was actually unable to play because of sore knees?

I have a hunch that Ron was informed that he would be on the bench at the start of the game--that Salmons would be starting. Ron,who claims to be "the man," the "go to guy" reacted by hiding in the training room and offering the lame excuse that he was unable to play because of sore knees.

Musselman is fed up with Ron Artest and I don't believe he's backing down.

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
A good theory, but I don't think it was right. The biggest concern from Muss/Corliss after the game was that the late announcement didn't give the team/staff enough time (or any time, really) to prepare. And I really doubt Muss would bring Ron off the bench unless it was completely health-related, and everyone said the knees was a completely new injury.

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
Also, yes, I think Musselman will at least try to appear strong on this issue. Whether Ron misses a few games or there's a big press statement about how it won't be tolerated or something, I think Muss will try to salvage control in some way.

If I'm Geoff Petrie, I'm on the phone. But we don't want Dunleavy or Murphy, OK?

Artest for Ike, Pietrus, Zarko and Monta.  We'll also toss in Ronnie Price. :)

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
Doesn't work cap wise and we're not going to take on any of those heftier contracts.  Well, at least I'd hope not.  Unless Baron Davis or Jason Richardson was involved.

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
Would anyone actually take Artest on at this point? We're still looking to move K-9 as well at this point. Is there anyone who would take those two for anything worthwhile?

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
Why are we talking about getting rid of Artest when Bibby is the one who desperately needs to get shipped out of town.  The new face of this franchise is Kevin Martin, and we need a point guard who is going to get him the ball first and look for his own shot second (if not third or fourth).  Artest has value to this team especially because of his defense and his work on the boards.  If we are going to trade either one of them, it can't happen without getting a pass-first point guard and a shot blocker/rebounder in return.  The last thing we need at this point is another swingman chucker to take shots away from Martin.
Freakin' Kings.

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
The problem with Artest is that he chucks up too many shots and he is a nightmare to coach. Bibby will give up the ball especially when asked by the coach. Ron believes he is a top-tier player in the league. That might be the case defensively but not offensively. Hve you seen Kobe play lately? He lets his teammates score (11 assists today i think) and yet takes over the game whenever needed (LAL victory over HOU - they were down big at the start of the game, it looked like a blowout). I have seen Salmons start the last two games and all i can say is that he drives and dishes. When Salmons is on the court, the Kings look like the team that we had years ago. Brad is playing great as of the moment and I want to build on this. Artest is too much of a distraction for our team. Plus, Bibby can walk away for nothing after the end of this season. Artest is not even a lock to resign after his contract is over. He has, after all, stated that he would love to play with Kobe, LeBron or the NYK for crying out loud!!! We can still salvage this season!

Re: Artest is Destroying This Team
Bibby is a better than ave. PG. His shooting problem is related to the injury--his shot will return.  Yes, he would concentrate more on getting assists and taking a limited no. of shots if requested to do so by Coach.

I don't think Bibby will opt out.  He's due to earn $28 Mil. in seasons '07 and '08. I doubt whether another team would pay more than that for a PG who is not even in the top ten at his position. (Also Bibby is too smart to go down the Bonzi road.)

A free agent never walks away for nothing.  At the end of the day (if Bibby should opt out), the Kings would end up with one of the following: 1. Offer Bibby a new contract and re-sign him. 2. Get another player via a sign and trade. 3. $28 Mil with which to sign new players.

Oh yes, I know he isn't a great defender, but I feel secure when he's running the offense.
