ESPN: Musselman is the new head coach
Extra, extra, read all about it: Musselman got the gig.
I think we've summed up our feelings pretty thoroughly this week, and this post from this morning is probably the best gauge, if you want our opinion.
This post will be updated as necessary.
Update [2006-6-2 18:11:49 by TZ]: Sam Amick says Musselman's camp is confirming it, and the Kings have a press conference scheduled for Saturday. Which means Musselman is absolutely the coach.
Update [2006-6-2 18:27:25 by TZ]: Okay, some very minor thoughts:
- Painting the new coach's name on his door won't be too hard: Rick Adelman to Eric Musselman. Get rid of the K, add an E; erase 'Ad' and stencil in 'Muss.' Someone facilities guy is very happy with this choice.
- Musselman, of course, is the one top candidate a Sacramento Bee columnist didn't spend a whole column one. Marty McNeal wrote at length about both Larry Brown and Mario Elie; Ailene Voisin wrote about Brown and John Whisenant. Dude wasn't that much of a longshot, was he?
- Time for a crow smoothie: I underestimated either the power of Geoff Petrie or the PR skills of the Maloofs when I said Whisenant was a lock earlier this week. I don't know what changed their mind, but I appreciate it greatly.
Update [2006-6-2 18:55:25 by TZ]: Party-time at Arden!
I'm thinking I might be in attendance. Anyone know a super-fast way to create a "Sactown Royalty" t-shirt?

This is a hire
And on a team with Ron-Ron and potentially Bonzi, that question mark gets a wee bit bigger.
He does satisfy a lot of the criteria Kings fans are looking for - successful NBA experience, defensive mindedness, etc.
So I'm cool with this. Now we can start talking draft picks and free agency.

Musselman: That's a Good Hire
(I'm just glad it's over because a couple of weeks of Larry Brown and Whiz chatter was starting to mess with my sleep patterns.)
The thing about Musselman is the guy has a lot of upside. Because of his deep and thorough understanding of the nuances of the game, his work ethic, and his enthusiasm, I think he could have the potential to be a truly great NBA head coach. And I mean great like at a Pat Riley/Larry Brown-level. (Maybe that sounds inconsistent after I just got through putting Larry and Whiz in the same sentence, but I do recognize Larry Brown as one of the greatest NBA coaches ever. It's just that IMO he would've been a disastrous hire for the Kings at this stage of his career and given the current state of the organization)
Anyway, getting back to Musselman, he's still fairly young and hopefully he can channel all that energy, and has toned down the Little Napoleon act that wore thin with some of the Warriors players. Smart people learn from what has worked and what hasn't worked in the past, and there's no doubt that Musselman really wants to make this succeed. He'll certainly have the a very strong collection of talent to work with.
And best of all this hire means that Geoff Petrie is still at the wheel, and Joe and Gavin can listen to reason. Now THAT is great news.
Hey, I'm pretty fired up. Go Kings!

Whizanoia
In his inimitable, "Look, pal, I'm from Poughkeepsie so I know what the hell I'm talkin about here" style, Grant has been confidently predicting Whiz for about week now, and waving off poor Mike Lamb's (mild) protests.
I guess in about 10 minutes we can hear his new take.
