Re: When there's nothing left to burn...
I think I am getting an ulcer.  No identity. No rhyme or reason to lineup changes and substitutions. The first half? Vintage Kings Basketball.  Assists up.  FG% up. Out rebounding the Cavs.  The second half.  Lindhurst High School could have beat the Kings.  How would Greg Oden look in Kings purple anyways?

Re: When there's nothing left to burn...
The sad thing, that loss didn't really help the Kings get any closer to the high lottery as all the other bottom-feeders lost.

Cavs did it all
Basketball pundit Jerry Reynolds stated in the third quarter of last night's game that the Kings were playing at championship level. Really? Most NBA teams have at least one go-to guy who can take charge and get the momentum going. The Kings have no such person. Mike Bibby did well until the Cavs took notice of him and shut him down. Martin continues to hang out at the back line looking for his shot. Miller gets frustrated. Lets face it, cellar dwellers seldom beat division leaders. I wonder what effect it would have to start Taylor in the power forward position. It sure couldn't be any worse.

Re: When there's nothing left to burn
This team is what it is.  Until Petrie pulls the trigger we are stuck watching bad hoops.  I find myself not even having much desire to tune in on game night which hasnt happened since 97'-98' back when irrelavance was what this franchise stood for.  I still have confidence that Petrie will make some moves but the guy operates at glacier speed which is good if you are trying to build a winner on kneejerk, panic moves by other GM's but excruciating if your a loyal fan despairate for hope.  I still say our best lineup is to start Artest at power forward with Salmons at the small forward spot and bench both Reef and K9.  If you are going to get hammered with your "power forwards" in the game then hell you wont miss them nailed to the bench.  Besides, Reef is better of the bench giving you some scoring against 2nd string guys.  One last thing, most people rave about how the Kings duped the Sixers by dumping Webber on them but at least Webber comes off the Sixers cap next year.  We are stuck with the Kenny "the human lowlight film" Thomas for the next 3+ years.  He comes off the books in 2009/2010 for goodness sake!
Damn you Robert Horry!!!

Re: When there's nothing left to burn, you've got
I don't really get upset any more when the team loses.  I've accepted the fact that the Kings aren't very good and they're not going to beat the #1 team in the East.  I'd like to beat teams like the Blazers, but I'm not going to get mad about a bad team losing.  That's what bad teams do.  It's far past time to blow this thing up.  I've actually come around on liking John Salmons.  I'd keep him and Martin.  Everyone else is expendable.

pyro on fire!
I think Carmichael Dave nailed it for me when he stated that he did not mind losing so much but it is the way they are losing.

We look really good at times. Just enough to keep us all on the edge of hope. Then the team goes Jekyl and Hyde out of nowhere. We KNOW they can play well - we just saw them do it! If they never played like they did in the first half, which was solid and dominating, we would simply think they did the best they can and respect their effort. What the heck happens to suddenly make the team, not one but a majority, totally and completely fall apart?

From the Bee: "We went away from team ball and did one-on-one," said forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who started in place of Thomas. "In a sense, it's sad. These last three games, we've played almost more than 3 1/2 quarters and almost a full game, but then we play terrible. It's a tale of two teams."

It isn't sad. It is down right depressing and as a result we are all looking for whom to blame like freaking Katrina just hit. Personally, I think it all starts at the clipboard and the leaders. It doesn't take long to see that there is a problem like abandoning team ball. There should be some barking and adjustments made to stop these swings while they are happening. To me, the team is what it is and the coaching staff is totally dropping the ball and unprepared to stop the raging waters.

Sorry to be so out of my usual Pollyanna "we can come back!" mode but this last game finally got to me.

this sucks
This third quarter thing has got to stop.  As Louis pointed out, the Kings have been outscored by a lot in the third quarter, and that is whats killing them.

And that stems from coaching.  The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expect different results.  Well, we keep doing the same thing, and are expecting different results, and we still come out flat, one-on-one, and totally different than we did 15 minutes previous.

You know how to fix it?  Start your 5 end of the bench guys at the start of the second half.  Tell them to run the offense.  They would kill for some PT, and im sure run the offense to make sure they continued to get run.

If your first unit is not getting it done, then sit them down until they do.

Re: this sucks
It doesn't appear that this team plays well with a lead.  They tend to forget what got them there and revert to 1 on 1 offense and matador defense.
And I agree with you, Chris, coaching is certainly part of this. Athletic teams are always (partly) a reflection of the coaching staff.  This team has been undisciplined and unfocused the entire year. Lack of preparation has to receive some of the blame. Generally, the Kings play 30 - 35 minutes out of a 48 minute game.  Their record is a reflection of that reality. (Yeah, I realize that we don't have a superstar, but we do have - on paper - a handful of very nice players.)

Re: this sucks
Generally, the Kings play 30 - 35 minutes out of a 48 minute game.

That might be the most frustrating thing about this team.  No basketball team is going to play 48 solid minutes of basketball, the idea is ludicrous.  A good team will put together 35 minutes or so of good basketball and adequate basketball for the remainder. This type of performance will generally put a team in position to win almost every night.

What the Kings manage to pull off is 30 to 35 minutes of good, solid basketball, and about 15 minutes of the most horrendous NBA play you will ever see. And that's what kills me about this team - you can see them absolutely dominate their opponent for some period of time every night. How they manage to piss away that kind of performance in such a short period of time is amazing.

Re: this sucks
"and about 15 minutes of the most horrendous NBA play you will ever see..."

Yeah, that's spot on....if the King's just play a mediocre 3rd, then they win the game. Instead, it's a total diaster.

Well said.

& to build on that point....
They need to come out in the 3rd prepared to meet stepped-up defense from their opponents.
