Justin Williams In Trouble?

Local police spent the day searching the residence of Justin Williams. No word on what they were looking for and no charges have been filed. But I don't recall too many stories where the police searched someone's home because nothing was wrong.

Mr. Watkins, don't pack those bags just yet...

Update [2007-10-18 3:0:5 by section214]: Alleged rape per News10. Say it ain't so, Justin. Say it ain't so.

Update [2007-10-18 14:52:46 by TZ]: Video of the police press conference available at KOVR's website. An updated Bee story says Williams has been cooperative, he's never been arrested before, and the only other person believed to be at the home on the night in question is not a member of the Kings organization.

Update [2007-10-18 15:53:23 by TZ]: The Kings have given Williams an indefinite leave of absence, which typically isn't good. (Ron Artest got the same for his domestic violence arrest last year.) Justin's on his way back to Sacramento now, very possibly to be arrested.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
A rape case?  Whether that's true or not a journalist ought to know you can't just throw that term out there without being damn sure it's true. Especially when he also says, "Several people associated with the Kings organization were also at Williams' home on the night of the alleged assault..." This will haunt them for years.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
Who do you think "several people" are? If one is Ron Artest, this will never leave the front page.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
I have an idea who Justin's pals are on the team, but I'm not going there yet.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
Probably Quincy and Francisco?

Still, I don't want to speculate on anything but from what I have heard it sounds like there were more than just Justin in the house during the time. Maybe a party with alcohol involved? Some women over to have some fun with the rich basketball players getting drunk and going too far? Maybe Justin went too far?

No matter what, I HOPE it's not really rape because that would be devastating. Not just for Justin but for the woman and for the Kings organization and it's fans.

Yep.  Could be another Kobe situation where it's a grey area.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
Well it sounds like we will find out more as there is a press conference involving the police at 10am this morning.  Suddenly, making the Kings roster doesn't seem that important anymore.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
Oy. That's not good. Why couldn't it have been Kenny Thomas?

Looks like pre-season legal troubles are going to be an annual event around Kingsville.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
Anyone else have a problem with The Bee essentially running his address and a photo of his house before charges have been filed?

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
Yes.

I don't know what the etiquette is in this situation or anything but it seems highly unprofessional especially since he is a sports celebrity (of sorts) in Sacramento.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
Absolutely, and it's not something they can just pass of as an "oops sorry".  In this day and age, you know that question was discussed prior to running the story.

I'm sure the Bee ombudsman will spank their hand with a ruler...whoopdedoo.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
I have a problem with that too, TZ. With all of the nut jobs running around (StR Nation excluded) The Bee couyld very well be placing Williams in harm's way. I hope the next time a Bee writer gets a DUI or defaults on child support that it is reported with as much detail.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
News10 did the same thing, so it's not just the Bee that's a problem here.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
Just to be clear, the major problem is obviously the accusation and how it affects the potential victim, not the local media' journalistic standards.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
Agreed; that doesn't excuse putting either party in the position of potential future vigilante harm. This is why we (rightfully) don't name accusers. We shouldn't be releasing street maps (for all practical purposes) along with allegations (not yet formal charges) of sexual assault.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
Good points, TZ and Carl.  The problem in these cases is that the system is totally stacked against the alleged "perp."  When names are associated to a crime as reprehensible as rape, those names are forever tainted regardless of the outcome. Should charges not be brought against Justin (or anybody associated to that night) or should he go to trial and be found not guilty, his name will still always be associated with rape.

This undeserved stigma is not right; and it is especially bogus in a time when the police and the DA often choose to prosecute crimes based soley on the politically correct nature of the alleged crime. (Keep in mind, for the local DA office to function daily decisions must be made regarding which cases to prosecute and which cases to dismiss.)

It this mindset that led to the Duke episode and until it changes innocent people are going to suffer. Moreover, the system itself may suffer when the public begins to question the veracity of guilty verdicts imposed on those rightly found to be criminals.

Re: Justin Williams In Trouble?
Remember Duke...

Woman do sometimes lie; men are not all barbarians.  This simple truth, however, doesn't fit the media template. How long did those Duke kids have to suffer because of race-baiting, politcally correct chicanery.

If there was a crime, then let there be punishment. But, until it is proven, people's privacy should be respected and innocence presumed.

Finally word from ESPN, http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3069278 , seems like he's on indefinite leave now... sad times are brewing in Cowtown, USA.

It looks like we'll start the season with a front line of Braid Miller, K9(woof!), Mikki Moore. Lots of potential to be kinda good or really bad.

Do we even have enough bigs for the Hydra? And remember that Artest is gone for the first 7 games so there goes plan B.
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.
