Will Darryl Watkins Stick?

That's the only real mystery as the Kings get ready to make their final cuts today. Eleven players have guaranteed contracts (and thus, roster spots) which leaves

Justin Williams, Darryl Watkins, Mustafa Shakur, Orien Greene

as the possible waivees. The Kings don't actually have to cut anyone. But they will cut at least one; Geoff Petrie never rolls with more than 14 players. They will probably (complete guess) cut two players. If they do, goodbye Mustafa Shakur no doubt.

The three options for that other roster spot:

  1. Keep Williams, Watkins and Greene. I think the team would only cut Williams if it looks like he'll be thrown in jail. It's been eight days since the story broke. I'm not convinced the district attorney will press charges at this point. I think Greene is likewise in line to stay, just based on his preseason minutes and the lack of depth behind trade asset Mike Bibby.
  2. Cut Watkins.
  3. Cut Williams or Greene to keep Watkins. For the reasons above, this doesn't make sense.
The thing with Watkins: You could very well get him back in January, a la Williams last year. Who knows what the roster will look like by then? John Salmons' trade value is shooting up; Bibby's could get back on track; Ron Artest will be in trade rumors til the day he dies. Las year, the Maurice Taylor ganja suspension and subsequent waiver led to Williams' return. A lot of things could happen between now and January to get Watkins another shot in Sacramento. And like Williams, it doesn't appear a lot of teams will be in a rush to compete for his services.

So I expect Watkins and Shakur to get cut today. Shakur could make good money overseas; Watkins probably belongs in the NBDL with his skillset (interior defense, a decent post repertoire). We'll see.

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
I like Watkins effort and strength, but, frankly, don't really care if he stays or goes because his lack of skill makes him a non-factor absent a string of injuries. I'd like to see him in the developmental league increasing his basketball skills.

The only guy I care about (among those mentioned in the post) is Greene.  He is a very good and versatile defender and excellent athlete.  This guy needs to stay as his strengths are the King's collective weakness.

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
I also think Orien Green should stay.  My opinion on him is he has good PG skills.  The guy has a way of making things happen on both ends of the court.  He has an uncanny ability to make the right pass and can effectively shut down the opposition's guards with his scrappy defense.  Is he a better PG than Bibby?  Sometimes he is, especially when Mike is having an off day shooting.

I can see the Kings using him in a big role like when they go small.  Green at PG, Bibby at SG, Kmart at SF, Artest at PF and whoever at C.

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
Not his word is ever gosepel, on the afternoon show Grant said that he didn't think GP would cut anybody prior to January.

So, let's see who "knows" GP best - TZ or The Mouth ;)

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
Keep Justin Williams and Orien Greene. Greene has shown he has NBA talent especially on the defensive end. My only concern is that Theus will play him with Douby, Garcia and Moore on the floor. That is a very unstable and inconsistant offensive lineup. Greene would be much better playing with more of the regulars like Martin, Artest, Salmons and Bibby. Justin is our ONLY big that can rebound and block shots. Besides Moore he is also our only player with any real athleticism that can defend centers.

Watkins will do well in the NBDL and Shakur (who I had high hopes for coming into preseason) has been disappointing. I would be surprised if he is not cut.

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
I agree about mixing Greene in with Martin and Artest. His skills seem to fit theirs.

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
I think Shakur belongs overseas to make some more money and develop further before actually getting another camp invite (nothing wrong with him trying to make it to the nba this year though). I think Orien Greene surprised me in how effective he seemingly was (particularly since the writeups are the only way i could watch the pre season). Justin Williams probably won't be arrested (usually there are arrests within a week but who knows). He needs to be on the time because I don't think his skills will grow in the NBDL. Daryl Watkins is the interesting guy. I think he should go down to the NBDL for several reasons. A) he needs to develop some skills which WONT happen on the NBA level sitting on the bench. Homey needs to play.

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
I'm hoping that the Kings keep Greene, Williams and Watkins. Worse case scenario the Kings can send Watkins to the NBDL which is what they should have done with Williams last year. I think Watkins is ready to play scrub time right now, where as Hawes is going to need rehab and that should be followed by a stint in the NBDL to get his training camp out of the way. Obviously the Kings aren't going to do this because for some reason the NBA doesn't develop talent the right way.
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
The Kings did send Williams to the NBDL last season.

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
No, they waived him and he went to the NBDL. They brought him back in January, which is the first opportunity to sign players to 10-day contracts.

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
Ah,gotcha. My bad, but either way he did get some NBDL time last season.

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
My point Otis is that the Kings exposed Williams to being signed by another team instead of just paying him a minuscule rookie free-agent salary. Watkins looks like he can play, if not now maybe sometime this season. Let him keep his contract and send him to the NBDL when everyone is healthy and ready to play.
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Will Darryl Watkins Stick?
I think that was Petrie's biggest mistake. Or the Maurice Taylor signing (whichever way you choose to look at it).
