Orien Greene May Start Wednesday

Sam Amick updates the point guard search: Earl Boykins said no to the minimum and there's no interest in Gary Payton. It's clear Reggie Theus wants to bring someone in; it's a matter of whether Geoff Petrie can convince someone to step in and also whether Petrie thinks anyone available (Keith McLeod? Ugh...) can help the team.

In lieu of anyone new, Amick hints Orien Greene might start Wednesday night. Theus, though reasserting he wants another point guard, seems optimistic about the chances of Greene and Quincy Douby to succeed.

"Didn't Brett Favre get his start that way, with somebody going down?" Kings coach Reggie Theus asked after Sunday's practice. "It happens all the time. An opportunity is in front of somebody to really get out and showcase themselves and really show what they can do."

Via the practice quotes on Kings.com, Theus also set the stakes for the two kids.

"We don't have room, nor do we have time, for a young guy to be a young guy right now. If that's the case, then we'll have to find an old guy."

Theus said he'll decide on a starter today. No pressure: Chris Paul is the first opponent.

For that reason, I think I'd start Greene. Douby's shown some nice defense, but Greene (as has been stated) is a Monster. He averaged a steal for every 9.5 minutes in preseason. He almost single-handedly caused about four 24-second violations. Quincy fights on defense -- through screens, in transition, for rebounds -- but Orien fights, too. And Orien just has more skill on defense. He knows what he's doing.

The offense is going to suffer, especially without Ron Artest banging and even more if Brad Miller sits out (!). Quincy at the point adds a stylistically similar player to Kevin Martin and John Salmons; the Kings need someone who's going to step back and pass the ball. It's going to be ugly either way: If it's Greene, that's an easy double team on Martin/Salmons; if it's Douby, you have three guards trying to create off the dribble individually while the other four players stand around. Neither Greene nor Douby helps the resulting starting offense. Greene seriously helps the defense. That's what side my opinion comes down.

A better offensive option might be to start Francisco Garcia back there, but that's leaves numerous problems. If you put Garcia on Paul, he's going to foul out in the first quarter. If you put Salmons on Paul, Peja Stojakovic is going has the opportunity to destroy whomever guards him. Either way, you have no one else to play small forward off the bench, which means one of Salmons or Martin has to stay in the game no matter what... unless you want to cast your lot with a superfun Greene/Douby/Garcia back court for a few minutes. (No thanks.)

It's a no-win situation, sadly. I prefer Greene as the starter, but it's not likely to matter a whole hell of a lot either way.

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
Orien Greene deserves a shot at PG.  He has done well so far every time he has stepped onto the court.  He brings scrappy defense, passing and the Kings seem to do well while he's on the floor.

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
I want to see Greene get a shot because david thorpe seems to know what he's doing. Lets only go after free agents and draft picks he works with and see how it goes. I'm actually excited about Greene long term, especially if he and Martin work together with Thorpe every offseason and develop some legit chemistry. That was what was missing from the Bibby-Martin connection. Bibby/Miller had it with Peja(at least on cuts to the hoop and spot ups) and bringing in a core of Greene, Martin, Garcia, Williams(who I hope is innocent), and later on SHawes doesn't sound too bad to me. I wish we could bring Divac back as a coach/consultant for our big men. I know for one, pookey would be happier if Divac taught Hawes the value of growing a strong beard, wearing cross earrings, and smoking yourself into playing shape. (And the wonderfully deft passing wouldn't hurt either.)

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
I like Greene a lot more once Artest is in the lineup. The Martin/Miller/Artest trio should relegate the PG to penetrating and dishing (advantage Greene), playing defense (advantage Greene) and hitting the open jumper (advantage Douby). I like Douby's potential offense off the bench.

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
I agree that Douby is the more proficient scorer.  I don't think the Kings need that at the PG spot right now.  They need a quarterback who can run the floor like Steve Nash or Jason Kidd does.  Kings need somebody who can get the rest of the team involved, bring the ball up the court without turning it over and also play some defense.

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
I see your point as somewhat flawed DaveL. I do think the Kings need scoring out of our PG position right now. We know what K-Mart brings to the table each night and we know Brad can (sometimes) score some points for us as well on a fairly consistant basis. However, we get absolutely NOTHING from our 4 position and our 3 isn't so clear right now with the absence of Artest for the first 7 games. The difference with Nash and Kidd and they're QB'ing abilities is that they actually have offensive weapons (or recievers continuing the football analogy) to distribute to. The Kings currently do not! That area is where I believe Bibby will sorely be missed. I feel that in order for the Kings to at least tread water for a bit in the early season we will NEED our PG to put up some points. Whether that is Greene, Douby or anyone else who Theus throws out there.

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
Isn't it possible that with better passing from the PG that the PF position may be more productive?  I just think it opens up more scoring opportunities with more drive and dish to players like Mikki and K9.

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
Good point. Any time you have a PG that can dribble penetrate and pass well, the play of the other 4 players is improved.

The bottom line, though, is that as much as we love to bitch about Bibby, he's going to be impossible to replace with anybody on this roster. Let's just pray the 2 - 3 guys who will probably play some at point can do a decent job.

Luckily, Artest isn't out too long.  He ball handling skills will be missed - especially now.

Agreed. Look what J-Kidd did for Mr. Moore.

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
I agree. i hope Moore continue to roam around the hoop as he did in NJ. I think that will be key to our success because outside of him and Williams we have no athletic "bigs" who utilize the area around the hoop to create space for themselves.

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
We have the beast when he is motivated to do so. As stated by others, I fear that with Bibby out he will feel the need to compensate for the lack of perimeter scoring. That and he loves to jack it up and pound the ball. I keep waiting for him to realize that nobody can stop him in the lane.

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
I agree with everything said in the main article by TZ. Sadly it's because of these various reasons:

  1. There's pressure to win now for this group from the front office? Maybe Geoff Petrie is really senile.

  2. Any veteran that we would want to take a 6 week starting job won't take it. What were the Kings thinking asking? (Maybe asking Earl Boykins for the minimum was smart--at least you get a decent veteran at a cheap price as a throw in to a trade later on.)

  3. Orien Greene is further along in his career than Quincy Douby is. Make Douby earn the starting position if that's where he will end up being. Kevin Martin had to earn it too. Hell Kevin had to earn playing time.

  4. I like making lists to agree with people (like section) about Douby off the bench in the time being after Artest returns. I think that would be a potent combination.

I think this team will hit a lot of bumps in the road early, particularly without artest, and whoever you start will make little difference. As TZ already pointed out.

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
Although I must admit I am sonewhat anxious to see Mikki in the offence i feel the jury is pretty much already "out" on K-9. He could quite possibly be the worst "around the bucket" scorer in Kings history. (Im sure Duane Causewell could make a case as well)I don't believe our PG's passing ability has been a problem for a number of years. For example,JWill was "Great" and Bibby has never been a "great" passer but has always been regarded as a "good" passer/playmaker. Lets face it, He has never been the fastest/strongest or most athletic PG in the world, so he has always had to rely on his shotting/passing abilities to win at every level (which he has). I think our "bigs" scoring abilities around the basket are far inferior to roughly 95% of the league's teams (save maybe Charlotte and Washington) Our PG's need to score in our current offence in order to keep up with all the firepower in the West right now.

With all due respect, Hoops916, when it comes to being the "worst around the bucket" the award goes to my long time hero - Joe Kleine, who, like Roberto Duran, sported "manos de piedros."

Damn man! haha Very well said Section 214... I can't believe I forgot my man Joe! Upon further thought, I still say Causewell and big Joe are a push... I just wish we had "bigs" who play the traditional role of the 4 and 5 positions so that the idea of "penetrate and dump-off" could even be a POSSIBILITY with this current team!

Re: Orien Greene May Start Wednesday
I think Theus's challenge will be to create a more threatening group off the bench.  If Greene can run the offense and slow down the opposing point guard, he'd do something we've not yet seen from a starting point guard, but they'd obviously lose some offensive force--Bibby hater or not, 17 points a game is still 17 points a game. To compensate, they'd need to take advantage of opposing second teams. If Theus could always have scorers on the floor who could also hustle the floor--such as Q (as Rartest calls him) and Francisco--I think we'd see opposing teams get worn down faster and the Kings would stay in a lot more games.

Well said NYC..I couldnt agree with you more! Hopefully our 2nd team can run and gun, (which you know Theus wants to do) , and keep us in more games!
