Watkins, Shakur Stay On Roster... For Now

Not only have Darryl Watkins and Mustafa Shakur survived being cut, but they'll suit up tomorrow night as Mike Bibby, Spencer Hawes and Justin Williams make up the inactive roster.

That's not great news. The only way our inactive list could be worse is if it were Artest, Martin and Bibby. (Which reminds me, is Artest going to miss the first week still?)

His hearing to shrink the 'sentence' is Thursday.

Here's what I don't understand. How does this benefit Shakur and Watkins? They both need consistent PT that they won't get. This training camp (while made more interesting for me) probably did a dis-service to both Watkins and Shakur who needed to play other places before expecting time on a NBA team.

Re: Watkins, Shakur Stay On Roster... For Now
I don't get it either pookey, unless one of the following is a factor:

They are waiting on the Williams thing to develop/go away before the cut Watkins loose.

They are keeping Shakur as the emergency PG until Bibby comes back.

They are keeping these guys in case they need cheap one year contracts to throw in on a trade.

I guess maybe Petrie figures they are relatively cheap insurance until the core of the roster gets healthy and/or traded. I suppose the benefit for Shakur and Watkins is they get paid and they're on an NBA team. Probably does not do much for their development, though.

Maybe this is in case a major trade is going to happen and we need roster fillers and trade throw-ins. We can only hope.

There is alot of things I don't understand in this world. Just throw this on the pile. And for the record all the points you bring up are of course in play. I just don't currently reside in Geoff Petrie's head so it's hard to predict what he will do.

Could they also be kept around for practice fodder?

They very well might be - and stop calling me fodder.

The Kings should go after Beno Udrih! The Wolves just released him.

Re: Watkins, Shakur Stay On Roster... For Now
Why would the Wolves trade a pick for Beno then just release him? Even if we tried to tank we could never be as bad as Minnesota. They will struggle to win even one game. I like Big B and maybe we should pick him up. He is a quality player and would be a good contignency plan.
