GAME 1 at New Orleans, Preview & Open Game Thread

Welcome to the regular season.

It's finally time for the real games to start... and what better way than to visit a markedly different team, one on the upswing with rising stars and an exicting frontcourt. One which blew the Kings out the last time they opened the season together. One which has a terrifying point guard and a terrifying (for us) center.

This season could be ugly (hence tonight's artwork -- Leap Into the Void by Yves Klein), and the ugliness could very well begin tonight. Here's a closer look at the proceedings to come.

THE OPPONENT
The Hornets finished three games out of the playoffs last spring, more a victim of Golden State's torrid run and a rough patch in March (which included a six-game losing streak) than anything else. New Orleans finished down 1.5 points per game on their opponents -- about 0.3 points better than Sacramento, which is to say Sacramento wasn't as bad as everyone thinks.

The Hornets did most of the damage on defense, holding opponents to just below .500 eFG and finishing 7th in defensive rebounding. They were great at avoiding fouls (a testament to Tyson Chandler's mental growth), finishing with the sixth lowest free throws made per field goals attempted rate. Despite Chris Paul's pickpocketing skills, however, the team was among the worst in creating turnovers. Defensively, the major upgrade is Morris Peterson, who while aging can man up more consistently than Desmond Mason (who left for Milwaukee). The other major defensive strengths and weaknesses -- namely Paul and Tyson Chandler on the positive side, and Peja Stojakovic on the other -- remain in place.

New Orleans' offense last season was far below-average, finishing 23rd in points per possession. The main problem: shooting. Peja missed most of last year, so his return helps in theory. Peterson can also bang the open jumper, and that right there is two more big-time shooters than the team had last year (ignoring the very able but sparsely weaponized Devin Brown, who went to Cleveland). If Peterson took all the shots Mason had last year, the Hornets would be much better off. Even better? A solid portion of those will instead go to Paul or Peja (which may or may not be a good thing in the latter case, depending on his recovery).

I'd give the secret to stopping Paul, but one doesn't exist. Stopping Chandler? Send him to the foul line. He shot .527 from there last year. You can hope to turn him over frequently, too -- but he handles the ball so infrequently it's tough to make him do anything. The best solution is to keep him off the offensive boards, and well good luck with that, Brad Miller.

Off the bench, the Hornets mainly boast Bobby Jackson with perhaps a sprinkling of youth in Hilton Armstrong and StR favorite Julian Wright. You know Bobby well; Armstrong is an infrequent shooting roleplayer, Wright a possibly anonymous (for the time being) point-forward with lots of get-up.

THE LITTLE KNOWN FACTS
Ryan Bowen has his own official website. They'll just give those to anybody these days...

BLOGGING WITH THE ENEMY
Friend-of-humankind Ron Hitley from Hornets 24/7 thinks this could be the greatest game in the history of the universe. (I think he's excited, but I can't really tell.) TheHornetsFan doesn't expect Orien Greene to keep up with Paul. I say he's crazy.

THE PROGNOSTICATION
The line is at +10 for the Kings... which astounds me. But if it were lower, I'd think the Kings were a good buy, so I guess Vegas just knows the Kings and Hornets better than I'd thought. Without Mike Bibby, New Orleans might be 10 points better. I wouldn't bet on it, though; most games end with margins around 7 points or less, and I don't see the Hornets being that good this early. The Kings, of course, could be that bad... but you're a lot safer taking the points here. I'd venture a 102-96 win for New Orleans, based on what little we know about our favorite team.

This game will begin at 5:00 p.m. Pacific. News10 has the television locally, and KHTK 1140 will bring you the sweet yet sultry tones of Gary Gerould. Enjoy, and let's go Kings.

Re: GAME 1 at New Orleans,
I'm hoping I don't draw the New Orleans crew on league pass. Last time I saw a Hornets broadcast (the black dude--don't know his name)  asked what there was to do in Sacramento. His partner replied that Sacramento was a transitory place to live (you can go to Frisco/Tahoe basically) and the guy was like so what? It was rather sad and stupid. I can't imagine 2 & 1/2 hours of that nonsense. I hope the game is worth it.

Well, what have we learned? I see that we're "already" down 29-24 after one quarter, and while our shooting % is good, theirs is much better. I dare say we let the other team control the tempo, and we don't have the talent to compete. Not having Artest/Bibby hurts too.

Salmons with 9... I bet he doesn't break 20.

Alot of fouls are being committed by the Kings. I wonder if some of that is Reggie's game plan trying to allow for less open buckets at the rim?

I like Daryl Watkins effort this game. It's been exciting to see somebody who just wants to bang inside. Whether he ever gets results is another story. Pookey.. what is your take on our PG position right now? I only ask b/c you seemed to be one (of the many) who thought not having Bibby around was a good thing.

by Hoops916 on Oct 31, 2007 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't want to watch Bibby
This team is bad and I don't mind that. It's in total dis array at the moment because of the various issues. I don't mind that either. Mostly I mind listening to Gil McGregor right now. He's utterly awful (actually the whole broadcast crew is awful). The kings look like they're playing at half speed and the hornets at full speed. I hope they catch up to full speed in 5 games or so. I knew this team would start poorly (with or without Bibby) and I'm glad there without Bibby to be truth. Gives them an excuse I suppose.

As far as the solution I'm not sure there is one. They were going to start poorly and that's what it is. You're not going to upgrade from Bibby unless you're getting an All-Star back. Bibby isn't an all star but he's paid like one. The problem at this point is you're not going to get an AS PG at this point from any team leaving you to draft one. That comes down to an opinion, whatever it may be, of what you think of the current G's. I like Greene but he isn't a starter. I like Douby but he is really an instant offense type of guy. I think time and patience, and lesser expectations, would be probably be the wisest course of action (ive stopped watching the game btw).

Re: I didn't want to watch Bibby
Ridiculous to mention because it will never happen but if we could somehow pry Hinrich from Chitown in a three-way Kobe trade I would be thrilled. Hinrich can score, distribute and play D. We could then trade Bibby for Gooden and have a real PF. Oh well... a guy can dream can't he?

by Mityt on Oct 31, 2007 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: I didn't want to watch Bibby
Hinrich/Martin/Salmons/Gooden/Miller. Now there is a team that can at least miss the playoffs by a closer margin. Replace Miller in a few with Shawes and we might even be competitive. One loss on this season and I'm depressed.

by Mityt on Oct 31, 2007 6:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: I didn't want to watch Bibby
I'm not interested in Hinrich either( even though I think he and Martin would be a terrific fit together). I just think this team needs to get another kind of player @ the PG then what it has. I will say though Hinrich is appealing because of his defensive/pass first abilities and that's something I'm not sure Chicago is willing to give up regardless of getting Kobe or not. Paxson/Skiles value those blue collar type of players and maybe overly so.

Interesting Stat: Since David West hit that miracle 3--47-24 for the hornets. Hard to win games when you get deflated by a single shot.

It might be a bit early for that Hoops. Should I remind you of the last two season openers (with Bibby):

November 1, 2005 - Hornets 93, Kings 67

Positives If Any
This is a pretty ugly game for the Kings, but, what are the positives we have seen here?  Watkins?  Cisco having a lil better game?  Your thoughts?

by idjpg85 on Oct 31, 2007 6:54 PM PDT reply actions

Re: Positives If Any
I see some positives. Douby's few shots he hit. Watkins general aggressive play. Garcia playing well. The possibility of playing Salmons at the PG while Martin and Douby run off screens maybe? I think that would require JS realizing his role differently ,but that would just be the reality of him growing up along with the rest of this group, than he has before. Or then again maybe Salmons will never improve. But that's the job I think of Reggie I think. To take this team from a downtrodden mis matched state and try to find a way to match them up some. Match the skills and tendencies to mesh them as a more complete unit. It's very clear this team needs Spencer Hawes to come in and rebound better as well.

Re: GAME 1 at New Orleans,
What you're seeing is that while the Kings have made K-Mart the first option (and necessarily so) they don't have any other offensive options to consistently score outside of Mike and Ron. Why I want them to trade Ron/Mike is for that very reason. That mix WONT work on a long term basis for all the various reasons mentioned previously. The mix is there to do good things down the road but a team in transistion with so many veterans with undesirable contracts (which made Mikki Moore so less unexplainable--and the Hydra comment so shrewd and sickening simultaneously)is just not the way to go.

For the record I have to listen to Anthony Anderson announce this game. I'm going to throw up.

Watkins=Athletic Trash

Wow this is bad.  Right now I would take a hydra of mediocrity, what we currently have is a hydra of futility.  The only thing worse is the new sideline reporter.  For the love of Christ where is Koz.  They could pick someone up in the seats at random to do a better job...wtf
Damn you Robert Horry!!!

Re: i smell comeback
Your naivette is showing. The Hornets quit because they thought the Kings did too. I say abuse this group (make the Hornets bring their starters back out hehe).

Re: GAME 1 at New Orleans,
The kings are out of sync right now. They're better than they're playing but the Hornets could make the playoffs.

On the other hand hanging around after the game they've played is a sign they won't quit. That's maybe the best sign of all.

Re: GAME 1 at New Orleans
i think we can officialy end the orien greene experiment. Not enough firepower on the floor.
We need Garcia or Douby in the starting lineup.

Silver lining of all silver linings:

K9 starts is subbed out early and never seen again in either half.

Shocking result
The only person who didn't see this coming is Geoff Petrie.  How could not changing a bad team possibly go wrong?

I'm being half-sarcastic here.  Obviously, having Bibby and Artest out makes the team worse.  Not that they're any good with the two of them.  It was nice to see Cisco, Martin and Salmons have good games.

Re: GAME 1 at New Orleans,
I gotta say I love listening to Kevin Calabro call a game. If there is a silver lining in moving to Seattle, maybe that's the biggest one. Listening to a very good pro announcer call the game the way Calabro does.

Re: GAME 1 at New Orleans, Preview
The Greem Monstrosity - 1 Assist, 2 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, in 17 minutes. Who was saying he was a good ball handler and we shouldn't be looking for a point guard? Boykins is looking pretty good now, huh?

Not really actually
This team was destined to start poorly (combination of Artest being gone and the starting opponents on the road no less) as it was pretty much a slated 0-3 start. Anything other than that and I say you did good.

Re: Not really actually
The team is destined to start poorly and more than liely end poorly. But the point is (minor pun) we don't have a point. With Bibby we could have limped along with no true PG back up.) But every reall PG in the league has to be licking his chops when we come to town, unless we bring someone in.

Re: GAME 1 at New Orleans, Preview
I admit I was pumping Greene up.  The guy looked scared to be on the floor.  I knew he would likely get into foul trouble.  But he wasn't really as bad as you say.  Didn't you notice that while Greene was on the floor the Kings did fairly well?  And that the Kings fell behind badly when Greene was on the bench?

But I do agree.  Petrie should figure out a way to sign Boykins.
