Artest as Power Forward

Most of John Hollinger's ESPN.com player projections are up (no Kevin Martin or Francisco Garcia yet), and he's a snip of what he says about Ron Artest:

Artest seemed at his best last year when he played power forward in smallball lineups. The arrangement allowed him to take bigger payers off the dribble at will, while his size was rarely a problem at the other end because he's so strong. With the league seeming to go smaller every year, we might see this arrangement more often.

Ron-Ron is such a role-driven player it just might work. Eric Musselman told him they needed him to be a rebounder: He rebounded 25% better than he ever had before. At least in theory, it makes sense he'd hang out near the three-point line while there are two bigs in the game with him. But when you specifically charge him with manning the post, it's a task I'm sure he'd have no problem attacking.

The problem: Even if he rebounds like last year, he'd still be a worse rebounding option than Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Kenny Thomas, Brad Miller and Mikki Moore. One possible solution: Play him alongside Justin Williams. Artest can't defend the Yaos or Shaqs of the league. Luckily, there aren't many Yaos or Shaqs. You can get away with putting Ron on the best opposing post player against most teams. Williams isn't a good man defender, but loves to come off the weak side to block or alter shots. But his big boon -- he's a tremendous rebounder. As long as you have a backcourt defender (John Salmons or Francisco Garcia) and two scorers/creators on the floor as well, I think you could get some positive miles out of that lineup.

Another solution: pair Ron-Ron with Miller in the frontcourt, and run three guards (Mike Bibby, Martin, either Garcia or Salmons) out there. It does the same job of locking Artest in the post, especially considering Miller's favored place at the top of the key or at the elbow, while providing an extra creator to draw away a big defender. (Williams doesn't exactly need to be swarmed away from the ball.) And (depending on how the conditioning program has altered Miller's game) it can give you some defensive help against bigger teams.

Again, it won't work on every team -- Houston and San Antonio especially; Ron isn't manning up on Yao or Duncan and getting away with it any time this century. But so few teams have a remarkable post player or two above-average bigs that you can get away with running out undersized defenders. And making sure Ron-Ron knows he's needed in the post offense -- where he'll draw a fair share of doubles -- helps in multiple ways: He's a deadly scorer down there, he loves to draw fouls and we'd prefer he stop creating from 25 feet out.

Dammit. And just when I was thinking that I would be too busy to watch this group? Goddammit.

Re: Artest as Power Forward
I like it.  Slay the hydra and put Ron-Ron in the post.  I would even argue with your assertion that he's a worse rebounding option than Thomas, Shareef, Miller, and Moore.

Re: Artest as Power Forward
I agree with Rick Adelman when he failed to single out players for not grabbing boards. He just pointed out that rebounding is a team concept. That maybe what TZ is going for?

Re: Artest as Power Forward
I mean that statistically, Brad/Mikki/Kenny/Shareef at their lowest levels are better rebounders than Ron at his highest level. You can play Mike Bibby at power forward and his rebound rate isn't going to improve.

Re: Artest as Power Forward
Yeah that was the real point. I shouldn't have used your name (just the point in general) about gang rebounding. Because I have found it to be true.

Re: Artest as Power Forward
I agree. I brought this up earlier this week in the post about Theus not wanting to run a lot of plays.

While the high-post offense with Brad will most likely be the main option on the offensive end, Artest needs to be the post player for us this year. With Shareef coming off knee surgery, we will need to have somebody who can play consistently in the post, drawing fouls and double teams. Artest is a good passer too and can pass to the cutters. Small-ball is becoming the way of the west and with Artest at the 4, he should be able to do a good job.

The big question is whether Ron-Ron can restrain himself to not jacking up 25 footers and trying to take over from the perimiter ala McGrady or Lebron.

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Re: Artest as Power Forward
Miller/Artest/Garcia/Martin/Bibby.

We would have some match up problems here and there, but so would our opponents. And this would definitely be the most fun group.

I like it!

Re: Artest as Power Forward
I do too as long as Artest is not trying to be the poing-power forward bringing up the ball and going one-on-one on the perimeter.

Re: Artest as Power Forward
I called for this in an earlier post, so I obviously agree with you.  We'd be tough offensively.  And Garcia and Ron Ron can defend with anybody.

Re: Artest as Power Forward
Last year, when Garcia was still going thru the learning curve, I called for Salmons, Martin, Bibby, Artest and Miller. Now Garcia would be good too.
Time to blow 'em up, boyz.

Re: Artest as Power Forward
"Sacramento Kings forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim will take at least three weeks off to rest his surgically repaired right knee.

The Kings also said Friday that first-round draft pick Spencer Hawes will travel to Seattle on Tuesday to get a second opinion on his sore left knee from his personal physician.

The moves will leave Sacramento without two key big men in its preseason opener Tuesday night against Seattle"
