Spencer Hawes Fits Sacramento Just Fine

I finally found a real reason to love Spencer Hawes. Kings.com has asked all the players what they'd pick for intro music if the NBA had such a thing. Most of the players (Nik Caner-Medley included) chose a hip hop song. (Bigs up to El Flaco for the reggaeton, though.) Reggie Theus went with Donna Summer. (?!?) Ron Artest even picked one of his own creations.

But Spencer Hawes? He's different. His choice:

In the warrior's code, there's no surrender
Though his body says stop, his spirit cries never
Deep in our soul a quiet ember
Knows it's you against you
It's the paradox that drives us on
It's a battle of wills, in the heat of attack
It's the passion that kills
The victory is yours alone

In the burning heart, just about to burst
There's a quest for answers, an unquenchable thirst
In the darkest night, rising like a spire
In the burning heart, the unmistakable fire

This kid is so freaking American it hurts.

Just be glad Sergei Monia's no longer in town, I guess. And make sure you watch the first Jazz match-up; I sense Andrei Kirilenko's nose will be in danger.

Jeez, this guy needs a hug or something.  I wouldn't go eating a granola bar around this guy for fear of getting reported to the McCarthy board for being subversive.
Damn you Robert Horry!!!

Why do I keep getting this image of Chris Cooper who played the Marine dad in American Beauty stuck in my head when I learn more about good ol' Spence.

Nice post, TZ.  That video brought me back to the teen-age years. A handful of my high school football teammates went to see Rocky IV prior to our section semi-final football game. Time flies....

The fans are going to like Spence because he is his own man and not afraid to show it. True authenticity is a rarity in professional sports - or in life generally. I hope we actually get to see him play this year.

Re: Spencer Hawes Fits Sacramento Just Fine
It should be noted Shawes was -1 years old when Rocky IV hit the theaters.

At least Reggie didn't choose Eye of the Tiger.

Is liking hip hop thus not/less American?

Re: Spencer Hawes Fits Sacramento Just Fine
Not if the hip hop song is included in a Rocky soundtrack.

Re: Spencer Hawes Fits Sacramento Just Fine
Everything -- even Toby Keith -- is less American than "Burning Heart."

Whether your dominating the playground, the last one to leave the gym, or your big time like Mike Bibby...
