Thursday Footnotes, Courtesy of Beno

  • Sam Amick reports the Kings might have just signed Beno Udrih. More soon. At the very least, Mustafa Shakur has been cut. Happy trails, young man.
  • Here's the 'four factors boxscore'; I hope to bring it to you after every Kings game this year.
Team      ORtg    eFG   OReb%   TORate   FTRate
     SAC      94.7   .463    19.5     15.8     18.5
     NOH     109.5   .571    29.7     20.0     20.8

The only thing the Kings did well statistically: limit turnovers. Many of New Orleans' giveaways were unforced, so you can't even give them credit for the Hornets' high turnover rate.
  • Orien Greene will get bashed for his game. Just know the Kings outscored the Hornets by five points in the first half when Orien was at the point (21-16 in nine minutes with stints in both quarters). Orien Greene wasn't the problem. Most (all?) of those minutes came with Chris Paul on the floor.
  • Quincy Douby says he'll be fine by Friday's game in San Antonio.
  • Sam Amick says a Bobby Jackson and Rasual Butler for Kenny Thomas trade almost happened this summer. I continue to be floored by New Orleans' apparent continuing lust for K-9 (woof!).

Quick youtube videos of Beno:

Getting owned by Duncan in the pregame: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIyPCz5d7oU

Interviewing abilities: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ku9KdKsDIEs

And a buzzer beater: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ5Gd4vLt7Q

Not too much game footage available, a lot of what's availible kind of hurts the eyes.

Thanks for pointing that out TZ.  I was thinking the same thing.  As a matter of fact, all through the preseason that was exactly what I noticed, that the Kings did well when Greene was on the floor for the most part. But am I the only one who noticed a certain amount of unsureness in his offense?  It's looked like he had no plays to run.  I knew foul trouble would keep him off the floor.  He needs to work on playing defense without fouling so much.

Re: Thursday Footnotes, Courtesy of Beno
Just wanted to point out that note about Bobby Jackson and Rasual for Kenny Thomas didn't say anything about the Hornets wanting Thomas.  It said the Hornets declined the trade.

I really can't see the Hornets - who are really careful with their cap - picking up Thomas and his contract, which goes longer than Butler and Jackson's.  They are relying on Butler and Jackson coming off the cap so they can extend Paul.

Re: Thursday Footnotes, Courtesy of Beno
It wouldn't be mentioned if there wasn't some sort of negotiating going on, I think. Amick's pretty discerning with rumors. If it got to the point where Bobby knew, then I'd say there was something there.

Re: Thursday Footnotes, Courtesy of Beno
I'm with Ryan.  I could offer a holey sock and empty can of bug spray for those two and it would be treated with the exact same amount of seriousness.  They probably told Petrie to call back as a prank.  The Hornets gathered all of the execs and coaches in the same place just so they put Petrie on speaker phone and then laugh about it later.

Re: Thursday Footnotes, Courtesy of Beno
Yes, Orien did not hurt the team, but only ONE assist in 17 minutes? 2 points? OK, I understand that John Salmons ran the show pretty much when he was in there and Orien did a good job on defense but I doubt we win the game if Greene plays 40 minutes.

To be honest, even though I am fine with us waiving Mustafa Shakur and keeping Greene, I think that in his 3rd year in the league, Mustafa would have been a much better player than Greene is now. Of course, that's three years from now and we can't wait for that. One thing I liked about Shakur is that he was fast, knew how to push the ball, penetrate and get the ball to the open man. Orien is a very good defensive player but... that's it. He can't shoot, run an offense, penetrate or run the fast break.

Call me crazy, but I would have liked to keep Shakur instead. Hey, we are rebuilding aren't we?

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Re: Thursday Footnotes, Courtesy of Beno
Only way to keep Shakur is to actually give him mins. I'm not sure anybody around the organization was ever going to make that commitment to him EVER.

Re: Thursday Footnotes, Courtesy of Beno
You can't get assists on a) isolation plays (if you take Salmons out of the equation, only 44% of the Kings' baskets were assisted... that means iso) and b) missed shots (the Kings shot terribly). Not making excuses, just helping you see the whole picture. Assists depend on someone else, like RBIs in baseball.

Re: Thursday Footnotes, Courtesy of Beno
I understand what you mean, but as far as I have heard, Theus doesn't call too many plays. He let's the point guard play "open" to run the offense how he wishes. Was Salmons the point guard last night when Greene was in there? Maybe he was. I just think that if Greene were a passer, he would be able to do something with it. Paul had the ball last night, got a screen and bam, 12 assists. Yes, Paul is an exteme example but he didn't need much more than a screen most the time to set up a teamate for an open shot. He found the open player. I didn't see Greene try that very often however to be fair, the offense is not run the same way as NO. Maybe it's on Theus to get the point guard in the spot he needs to be in on offense to set up other players more often.

Anyway, my main point (no pun intended) is that Shakur and Greene are both marginal players. If the Kings are rebuilding then why not keep Mustafa instead? Did we get Greene because he is more experienced and so a better player right now? Well, Justin Williams is less experienced than K9 but who would you rather be in the game? We are going nowhere this year anyway.

Re: Thursday Footnotes, Courtesy of Beno
Paul and Greene aren't comparable (on numerous levels). What I'm saying: You can't get an assist if you pass the ball to someone who then stands in the triple-threat for four seconds, then goes one-on-one. (That isn't a knock on Salmons -- he saw the mismatches last night and also passed well once he got to the rim. Ron-Ron often does the same.) Greene, I think, isn't asked to play that way or the way Paul plays (pick-and-roll, pick-and-roll and then some more pick-and-roll). Greene needs to bring the ball up, get it safely to a creator (Salmons, Martin, Garcia, Shareef in the lowish post or Kenny [gag] in the high post), and move to get open. He didn't always get it efficiently to a creator last night (got trapped a couple times -- a big no-no), but he wasn't as terrible as '2 pts, 1 ast, 2 TOs' seems when you consider his role.

Re: Thursday Footnotes, Courtesy of Beno
Very true TZ. I think you are right about why he didn't get any assists or points. That wasn't his role. My question then is, can we win with a point guard relegated to bringing up the ball and giving it to Salmons and sitting in the corner? Of course, with the limited talent we have with Artest, Bibby and Hawes out (and SAR still getting his legs) we have to play somebody at point. My problem then is, why play Greene when we only have Martin and Salmons for offense in the starting line-up? Douby or Garcia would seem a better choice to give the defense more to worry about. Yes, Greene is a good defender but with Miller and Thomas, we can't defend the post or offensive board. We need more than just two scoring threats on the offenseive end.

I think that Garcia and Douby need 20 mins each at the PG spot.

I like Beno
I would not be upset if we signed Beno (as stated ealier). Not too good but not too bad either.... and he can shoot which is something we need until, gulp, Artest comes back.

Re: Thursday Footnotes, Courtesy of Beno
Hard to rip or praise a guy on nine minutes or work. Was the scoring differential because of his D or does it say more about Kings' energy level early on in the game

Don't get me wrong. I'd loved to be surprised, but I don't see any reason to expect his assists to go up, and turnovers have plagued him his whole NBA career. Have to wait and see if the scoring difference is a trend or a blip.

Go to sacbee.com

Beno Udrih, your newest sacramento king.

He's always been a solid PG when I've seen him play.  Granted, this was mostly during garbage time, he's probably one of the better options we have right now
