Around SBN: Ohio State And Florida Target 2013 Receiver Recruits

Wednesday Footnotes

  • Ron Artest is back. It looks like he may start at power forward, which is thrilling on dozens of levels. (Also: Happy Birthday, Ron.)
  • Justin Williams won't be back tonight, but apparently will be back very soon.
  • KCRA talked to Williams, and he expressed his desire to get back on the court ASAP.
  • Kevin Martin may soon be wearing Steve Nash's signature Nikes, though other shoe companies are also vying for his services. He wore Jumpmans (a second-tier Jordan brand) the past few years. I believe Mike Bibby wears the Jumpman brand, as well.
  • From the same link: Sam Amick agrees on the whole usage rate fiasco going on with Martin. He needs the ball more!
  • You know who else agrees? ESPN's John Hollinger. "He's become both a deadly outside shooter and a free-throw magnet, and unlike a lot of big-time scorers, he never takes a bad shot." Hollinger also marks John Salmons as an early season surprise, commenting that "in the early going he's been a revelation who has helped take some of the heat off Martin." I'm not sure this Salmons could exist in a bench role... or even with another high usage player (Artest) in the starting lineup. I hope so, though.
  • In his chat, though, Hollinger reveals he doesn't think Martin can make the All-Star cut through no fault of his own: "History shows us that when in doubt, the coaches will ALWAYS screw a guy from a team with a losing record -- ask Elton Brand about this sometime -- so the odds of Kevin getting shafted are pretty high."
  • Friend of StR Brian McCormick wholeheartedly endorses a Shareef Abdur-Rahim for Carlos Arroyo trade. I cannot blame him.
  • This Stephon Marbury stuff is really too much. If you're into drama and find yourself getting nervous about the WGA strike... just keeping reading the New York tabs the next week or so. I predict much humor.

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
Artest in and K9 out?  Sounds like a recipe for a win tonight!  Miller questionable.  I hope that does not give Brad an excuse to suck again.  He has been playing at a higher level recently.

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
"Questionable" for a bruise?  I know those thigh contusions hurt like hell, but you can play on them if you stay really, really warm.  The problem may not be him starting, but whether he is effective after sitting down once he goes to the bench for the first time.

So...
It looks like K9 could be the "sitting out practice with a hurt shin" guy, doesn't it?

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
So sports radio is filled with Marbury chatter this morning, as he supposedly mixed it up with Isiah on the team charter and is currently back in New York while the team is on its way to LA. Does this make the Knicks so deperate to deal him that they would include Lee in a deal? If so, I say take Marbury and Lee and a draft pick and deal as much of the hydra as you can along with Artest. Get whatever you can for Bibby once he comes back. Marbury is an expiring contract next year and would be tradeable (if Ratleff and Francis are tradeable than so is Marbury). You've sped up the rebuilding process by at least a year, acquired a good young player and a draft pick, and all you have lost is overpriced players and one talented yet mercurial player. Under those circumstances I can deal with Marbury for five or six months.

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
Marbury has two yrs left on his contract at around 21 mil per.  So that means 18 months of mebury.
trade em all except Kev, John, and SHawes...How's that TZ?

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
Not if you can deal him as expiring contract next year. As I noted, such untradeables as Theo Ratleff and Stevie Franchise have been dealt under similar circumstances. Even if you can't deal him you still speed up the rebuilding process by a year, and you add a guy in Lee that could work real well next to Hawes. Compared to what we have right now wouldn't you love to see Hawes/Lee/Salmons/Martin/Marbury with Garcia as your all purpose guy off the bench?

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
I think you can't just omit the fact that you'll have to deal with Marbury for a year section.
If you buyout his contract then I'm ok with it.
I just don't want this jackass on our team.

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
I think the real problem is that you would be playing Stephon out of position (I actually agree Stephen A Smith) and trying to make him a PG. He's really a SG. Last I checked the Kings have plenty of shoot first wings.

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
Sorry section, I misread your comment.  I would probably make the trade as long as we knew GP would pull the trigger on a deal next year and not let him destroy the team for two years.  I would just have to not watch the kings the rest of the year.

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
If we can get a legitimate pf like lee in that deal, why the hell not? I'd rather be able to buy some starbury's in a black/purple colorway than watch k9 play here ever again. And it would increase the humor of the knicks situation-more undersized overpaid overaged forwards! It's like malik rose all over again!

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
If we can somehow get David Lee back for Artest AND get Jose Calderon from Toronto somehow (whether by trade or in free agency next year), all of a sudden our PF and PG spots would be young and solid.

C'mon Petrie!! That's my wish, trying to be somewhat (OK, barely) realistic anyway.

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
Do you want Cancerbury here for 18 months to show the young players on the team how fail to live up to your potential.  Kevin Martin doesn't get the ball enough now how will playing with this cancer help him

The best Cancerbury story I heard was from his one year at Georgia tech, was his parents after games cursing out his team mates for missing shots that would have increased his assist totals

by Murf on Nov 14, 2007 12:09 PM PST reply actions

Bring him in for the bump we'll get when he's gone
Every team that Marbury has left has improved significantly the instant he leaves.  You wouldn't want that kind of kick-start to a rebuild?

Kidding aside, if the Kings can get Lee, even 18 months of Starbury is worth that (especially when you front-load all of your bad contracts by removing those 3rd year deals).  If Steph is a cancer and bottoms the team out, it won't matter much because he'll be gone ANYWAY, and you can just add some high draft picks (not to mention his large cap space) to the rebuilding process.

If he works out, great; if not, great draft chances.

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
No doubt, there is significant risk here. Much in the same way that there was significant risk when we traded Mitch Richmond for a malcontent that didn't want to play here. The thing is, when we made that deal we had nothing to lose, nowhere to go but up. I kind of see that same situation now. Make no mistake. I don't like Marbury. I might even loathe Marbury. But I am unable to come up with other ways to lop heads of the hydra and bring back young talent in return. Drastic times call for drastice measures. No arguing that any deal involving Marbury is at least to the edge of the line, if not over it.

Re: Wednesday Footnotes
I agree with dalt. It seems that we are stuck as the fulcrum of a teeter toitter with rebuilding on one side and decrepit veteran heavy ex playoff team on the other. A move like this coupled with a good young pg who actually passes and can hit from the outside like calderon and our team goes from aging and terrible to young and full of potential. I dig it.
