Kings Waive Greene

(From the diaries. Thanks for the news, kingme18. This certainly could have something to do with some trade rumors, but I'll get into that in the comments. - TZ)

The Kings have cut their roster down to 14 by waiving Orien Greene, Geoff Petrie announced. Orien Greene has disappointed by Reggie Theus' standards and with Udrih signed as the point guard sharing the duties with Douby, Garcia, Salmons and even Artest, The Kings probably felt Greene was excess.

I, for one was kind of stunned the Kings waived Greene over Watkins because with the return of Justin Williams, I thought the Kings front-court would have been too deep while there is also glaring hole at the point with a lack of a true point guard other than Udrih rather than having a shooting guard or a small-forward transformed version of a point guard.

Re: Kings Waive Greene
It does seem baffling, Could this mean they are making room for another point guard (Marbury) and getting rid of some frontcourt? Just a thought.

Re: Kings Waive Greene
I don't think so.  Right now the Kings are three deep at PG.  Beno, Garcia/Salmons and Douby.  Green was excess.  It probably comes down to Watkins being a rookie and having potential value.  Why kiss off that value?

Re: Kings Waive Greene
I had planned on writing something about keeping or waiving Darryl Watkins this morning.

Clearly, that's not going to happen. Here are the possible reasons you cut Orien Green over Mookie:

  1. Orien sees the writing on the wall and requests it.

  2. You think you'll need Watkins sooner than you'd need Greene again, be it trade or injuries.

  3. You really see something in Watkins.

Option #1 seems most likely to me, with an outside chance at #2. Even #3 isn't wild; we all thought Mookie was done in October.

Re: Kings Waive Greene
What does this mean for Justin Williams. I'm pretty sure he's probably only going to get 10-15 minutes top.

Re: Kings Waive Greene
I think it may be up to Justin how many minutes he gets. At least in the long run.

If he comes in and grabs a rebound every 2 minutes and scores a basket every 5 minutes of action he should see his minutes increase every game.

Of course the problem for him will be can he not screw up on defensive rotations and keep from turning the ball over. One mistake he makes may see him riding the pine and we all know Justin is not the most experienced nor savvy player in the NBA.

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!
