Around SBN: Shattered: Wisconsin's home winning streak ends

Thursday Footnotes

  • If you haven't checked into the diary about Beno Udrih, you should. Lots of good discussion on Beno's performance and potential.
  • If you woke up this morning, stretched your arms and said "Man, nothing would be more perfect than seeing Darius Songaila's impersonation of Borat today," then you are a strange person. Also, you are lucky.
  • The Clippers made a somewhat bizarre move, waiving Ruben Patterson. The Nets also waived Eddie Gill yesterday. Hmmmmmmmm. I think the trade market could get rather hectic come Saturday.
  • Depending on your feelings on baseball, the Mitchell Report is a pretty good read. I, for one, am rather thrilled the entire Dodgers farm system circa 1999 has been implicated. Puts all that chirping about Barry in a bit of context.
  • Speaking of the Mitchell Report, otis notes in another thread Sacramento radio personality F.P. Santangelo shows up as an accused steriod purchaser. Mitchell's report says he bought at least once in 2000 and 'once or twice' in 2001. He also is alleged to have turned another player, Adam Piatt, onto the juice. Page 230 of the PDF. Santangelo wasn't on the air for The Rise Guys this morning, for what it's worth. I doubt he'll be on tomorrow either; it'll be worth listening to when he does come back. (Update: Santangelo went on the air with Mike Lamb this afternoon. You can listen to it on KHTK's website. He'll be from 7-9 am Friday morning to take calls.)
  • No King is anywhere near close to being voted in as an All-Star this year.
  • Boris Diaw might need a new home. Kelly Dwyer thinks he won't find one better than his current spot; if the Kings send away Ron Artest, wouldn't Boom Boom be a good fit with Kevin Martin, Beno Udrih, and Brad Miller? No?

Will FP be back?
Wouldn't surprise me if he didn't return at all. I rarely listen to the Rise Guys, so I don't know if anyone's point blank asked him if he did steroids prior to the report being leaked.

Fp's all juice.
He stated straight up on the rise guys that he never used the juice, he was a baller like Burnsey. I guess the report proves otherwise.

makes sense now
Kinda makes sense why he stuck up so hard for Bonds on the morning show.

too bad
It's too bad about this revalation because I think FP is about the only person worth listening to on the morning show.  I like a lot of his takes on issues, and his knowledge of other sports outside of baseball was really growing. It was easy to tell that he was working hard to become a better sports talk personality.

FP confession...
FP confessed to using performance enhancing drugs twice during his career on Mike Lambs show at 4pm. It was honest and gut wrenching and I truly felt bad for him. I am a steroid hater but I understand marginal MLB talents like FP who after a devastating injury and holding onto their dream by a thread chose to make a difficult decision. After the interview (if you can call anything Lamb does an interview) I have a new respect for FP. He's was not a good player trying to earn a big pay day or a great player trying to set records, he was a 4A talent, a 24, 25 man on a roster trying to feed his family.

Kudos to FP for coming clean, he is the first major leaguer I have heard do so. The Mitchell report outed him but he could have easily done the Roger Clemens/Barry Bonds B.S. and denied everything.

We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

It's good FP confessed
Can he actually go about going BACK to his job?

I don't know.
I think by coming clean and being the first to do so FP might be able to capture national attention which would bring notoriety to 1140. It's a tough call, if you aren't a true baseball fan you might not understands the reality of what some of these guys goes through to finally make it to the show. FP Santangelo played 7+ years in the minors and only made it as a utility guy. I for one am willing to accept his apology and let him move forward but there is always going to be a cloud hanging over him for a lot of other fans.

I feel like a hypocrite but I think Barry Bonds is a p.o.s. who already had everything handed to him and it still wasn't enough. I am also hoping that Roger Clemens becomes the target that Bonds has been for negative press. Clemens was washed up and revitalized his career by using performance enhancing drugs. I honestly question the last 4 Cy Young awards Clemens won, I also question his last 162 wins. Without the Cy's or the wins, Clemens would not have had the longevity necessary to make the Hall of Fame. I think that both Bonds and Clemens stats should end the day they decided to cheat. If that was the case, neither player would have the raw numbers for induction.

A guy like FP I can relate to. If there is such a this as a an every mans ball player FP was just that. FP didn't cheat to become an all-star or pad stats, he cheated to cling to his dream.

We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

I can symphatize with FP
The problem isn't that I don't believe FP's intention were good. I'm sure they were to hold onto his career. I don't really care about FP though any more than I care about Bonds or Clemens using steroids. Steroids were legal in baseball (or not testable--whatever) and that's that. I don't care about who holds the all time HR record (i think it's a pointless record). Stats are just that. Without an extra analysis or dive deeper, just saying that a guy hit 761 career HR's doesn't mean squat to me. If we sat and compared Babe Ruth to Barry Bonds he would lose hands down every time WITH the steroid seasons included. That's the real amusing part to me. People act is if winning Cy Young's is a major act of success, or maybe the only real major act of success as a pitcher. It's as much a subjective vote as the MVP is. To me Roger Clemens isn't relevant enough to worry about whether he did roids. His shriveled balls in old age is enough punishment.

I'd say that FP is worse than Bonds
Bonds was an MLB talent all the way, no doubt about it. Steroids or no steroids, he was going to be on a roster.  Same with Clemens.

But FP's use of steroids probably kept another borderline, clean player from realizing his dream of being a big leaguer.

Now, this is not to say that I don't understand why FP did the steroids, or that I wouldn't have done the same thing in his situation. But it doesn't make him a noble figure.

What really sucks is that we still probably only know a third or a quarter or even less of the total culprits involved. So instead of Bonds being the scapegoat for an entire generation of drug-enhanced athletes, there are now 80 or so others to join him.

I think it's asinine that these names have been released. Just more individuals to villify, and Selig and Fehr (and a ton of users who are not identified) will get a pass.

screams of anguish
So you're suggesting that we take on another big contract of a guy who doesn't play as hard as he should and therefore fails to live up to expectations? And you want this guy at the 4 spot?

Hmmm.

by iashwash on Dec 13, 2007 1:10 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Well...
It's a little different. Diaw plays hard, he just isn't getting to sort of run a player like him needs. And that's not fault of D'Antoni. But he's a 35-minute player. Otherwise, he's wasted.

I think this team minus Artest, there'd be tons of opportunity for Diaw to thrive. I might be alone in considering this, of course.

by Ziller on Dec 13, 2007 1:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i dunno
methinks arguments same for why someone would want Kenny Thomas... though, plays hard? I thought his malfunction was work ethic: doesn't stay in shape, doesn't try to improve.

Lots of forwards in the NBA, I think Diaw isn't one we should bother with. There's tons of oppurtunities for many types of players to thrive (aka, any athletic 4, mike bibby, hell... anyone who replaces Ron Artest). Diaw had Nash gunning for him to score, and as we see with Miki - a good point guard goes a long way.

by iashwash on Dec 13, 2007 6:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yep
Last year he had to play himself into shape.

by sactown on Dec 14, 2007 3:30 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Diaw
I actually like Diaw for this team. He can play multiple positions, he is athletic and he is a pass first guy. I know he wouldn't command double teams like Artest but at least he's not always thinking shoot first (we already have that in Garcia), I think Kev would benefit from playing along side Diaw. Plus, Diaw can also play PF or even C at times just to take minutes away from our Hydra

by kingme on Dec 13, 2007 5:53 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Well hold your horses a bit
Diaw can play the 4 or 5 but he cannot "play" the 4 or 5... know what I mean? If your the Mavs or Warriors then yes but against every other team he will get brutalized (not as much at PF but totally abused at C). I like Boris' game but I dunno if he fits with his team. I would like to see Ron stay anyways so I suppose I am biased (and like TZ in the minority).

by Mityt on Dec 13, 2007 6:57 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I like Ron too
I like Ron too but I wouldn't mind exchanging him for Artest. I don't know why but I wouldn't give up Ron for Gooden or Haslem. I'm also not too thrilled about Lee anymore although I'd settle for Lee over Haslem or Gooden any day. I guess I like the swap because of the fact that Diaw is a SF (I'm still not sold on Garcia starting at the 3 positio)n. The last thing we need is another front court player. Get rid of KT first.

Rank 'em
1-D.Lee
2-Diaw
3-Gooden/Haslem/other hydras

If...
your need is rebounding then Gooden jumps to number two ahead of Boris. whose strengths are  playmaking and scoring. Gooden is certainly better than Haslem in my book (and probably Diaw too). I only like David Lee because he is white (read pookey's diary... it will make sense)http://www.sactownroyalty.com/story/2007/12/13/215527/66).

Agreed
You're right on in regards to the rebounding, but I have never viewed Gooden as a rebounding machine (he is better than our group, but that's like saying Manson is a better dinner guest than Dahmer), and I like Diaw's versatility.

Linking is alot easier bro
i wish I could find a way to point out how to do it though. TZ has a way. I have to pester him to put a diary writing tips on the sidebar. Or something.

I'm going to leave the other links alone
I've commented on the steroids once; It's enough.

As far as Diaw is concerned this is something I have to agree with KD on. Diaw fits in the Suns for a variety of reasons. He's a small ball guy who's guard skills with the forward body work well in Phx's system when he's healthy and properly motivated. If he's not properly motivated in Phx, where you would think would be less trying than in Sac, then why would the Kings help his plight?

no all-stars
Outside of Kevin and Ron, we don't have any All-Stars.  Not even close.  It's too bad Ron Ron won't get the attention he deserves (outside of negative attention). He's our best player and certainly one of the best all-around players in the league.

by Kusian on Dec 13, 2007 8:52 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

that's the difference between ron & AI
AI has alot of fans; Ron by contrast doesn't. Too bad he is a top 10 player some of the time and an all star caliber player all the time.

This is very funny to me
This quite possibly may be the best thing on the whole steroids issue I've read. I'll link to it here for any dare read it. Fair warning it's not for the faint of the heart if you delve deeper. Here's a quote if you don't wish to:

Sweet, the Mitchell report comes out tomorrow! If you need any last minute Christmas gifts, this report will make for great toilet paper for your Aunt Maude to wipe her ass with! I can't really think of any more ridiculous use of 20 months of "work".
