Celtics Fans Apparently Afraid of Physical Basketball

As section214 noted in his recap from the arena, the game was a bit chippy. There was more jawing than action, I'd say, though Tony Allen gave Dahntay Jones a huge forearm shiver and Mikki Moore absolutely destroyed Rajon Rondo on a "block attempt." Kevin Garnett got hit about the head a few times; on replay, neither scrape to his eyes was close to looking intentional. And if KG thought someone was trying to hurt him, we'd know.

The whole Garnett-Francisco Garcia spat began when KG was yanking the ball (and by extension Garcia's forearm) around well after a whistle. Most players would walk away. Garcia yanked his arm away with his palm still gripping the ball; KG yanked back a bit and Garcia slapped the ball away. Again, most players walk away. Garcia did not. Garnett got in his face. The two continued to yap at each other all night. Dime Magazine's recap indicates Garnett brushed Garcia off; apparently, the viewer didn't watch KG walk straight into Garcia during a dead ball in the third. Garnett was every bit as involved in the spat as Garcia. And apparently on the Celtics broadcast of the game, the play-by-play man said Garcia's final words to Garnett -- the ones Dime ridicules -- were El Flaco telling KG it's not personal, good game, etc. That's what KG brushed off. But yeah, he's the classy one who's above all the muck down here on Planet Earth.

The Boston Globe's Marc J. Spears seems to have the only sane telling of the events from the Celtics' point of view. The Boston Herald can't manage to tell the difference between Dahntay Jones and John Salmons, despite Jones going to training camp with the C's this year and Salmons playing in Boston twice a year as a former 76er. The Herald's Mark Murphy paints Artest as the clown last night. I know things are sweet and beautiful in Boston, I really do realize this. But stop making KG out to be a saint. Kendrick Perkins fouled Artest hard; Artest said something, KG jumped in. KG kept yapping into the timeout. Artest walked toward the bench. He wasn't going at Perk for the hard foul -- Perk was behind Artest, the slowest back to the huddle. Artest was focused on KG. You think Garnett was innocent in this, that Ron-Ron would single him out for no reason? If you do, your shamrock-colored goggles must fog up every time The Ticket steps into your visage. Also, if you think this, you should read Sam Amick's Bee recap:

"I really don't want anybody coming into our building and talking the way they wanted to talk in our building, you know?" [Artest] said. "It just can't happen. That was it. In their building, that's cool, and we're going to talk back in their building. But in our building? Don't expect to come in our building and just expect to get away with everything. It just can't happen."

In other words, the world does not revolve around the Celtics. They are not a flock of untouchable clergymen. If they want flap their gums at Ron Artest and Francisco Garcia, they will receive gum-flapping in return.

This was all just a really long of pointing out the subtle reasons most of the country dislikes Boston sports fans. I really like CelticsBlog -- I'd consider Jeff Clark a very good blogfriend. But when I see silly headlines like this one, I want to punch someone in the nose. That moniker was stupid and played out in 2002. Analysis by gay joke is not remotely useful.

Coincidence??
Apparently Garnett isnt the biggest fan of El Flaco... I cant help but wonder if this has anything to do woth the fact that Garnett and R.McCants are good buddies from the T-wolves days. I wouldnt be surprised if McCants made a nice little holiday phone call to Garnett!

At the end of the game
When Garcia looked for a fist pump from KG, KG did brush El Flaco off.

What I like about the blogosphere
Is the creativity you see at so many sites...they lack the constraints that are foisted on the more "mainstream" sites.

And it could be a reason that blog has limited readership (from what I could tell on the lack of posts). Stealing 5 year-old Shaquille O'Neal material?  I'd pass as well - there's so many other entertaining alternatives.

Actually
CelticsBlog is among the biggest independent basketblogs. It might actually be the most well-trafficked.

And as I said, I like Jeff. I just think the overall attitude from Celtics fans/media that the C's all have halos over their heads is ridiculous, and I've always grimaced at repeated use of a gay joke to supposedly make fun of a franchise. Nevermind it doesn't actually make sense with the initial stereotype Shaq used to come up with the moniker (that the Kings were soft, and therefore effeminate).

Well
You wouldn't know it from the amount of comments on the site.  Perhaps the old QWERTY keyboard is throwing the faithful off?

by otis29 on Dec 27, 2007 11:31 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Yeah
It's a matter of a steady stream of posts all day and the presence of forums elsewhere on the site. I think they have a chat room, too.

Jeff's response
Jeff from CelticsBlog kindly responded to me via email. Here it is:

Some explanations/comments on my post:

  1. I haven't seen the game yet.  It was late and I'm an East coaster that likes his sleep, especially after a relaxing (right) holiday.  Even when I do watch the game off my DVR, it will likely be broadcast with the ever so objective (double right) play-by-play of the honorable Tommy Heinson.

  2. I admit, the use of that headline was probably in poor taste and maybe even out of character for me.  It was just meant to be glib but I could see how it would offend or at least annoy people.  I'll take a page from the athlete's guide to dealing with the media and say "If I offended anyone, I'm sorry."

  3. I simply read report after report this morning of how the Kings took a physical approach to the game and saw the coach quoted as saying that was pretty much the gameplan and I posted the quotes from those sources.  If the newspapers got the facts wrong or misrepresented them, bad on them.

The coverage wasn't wrong, but it wasn't full. That's to be expected -- Bostonians don't likely care what Francisco Garcia has to say. But the die-hard fans who populate C's blogs and other NBA fans deserve that side of the story. It's a problem of being in a small town with a small media presence and one frickin' blog.

Also, the sooner we retire the 'Queens' moniker, the better. I'm not the PC Police, but it's pretty wildly insensitive. And in this case, it doesn't even make sense.

But yeah, I'm not mad at anyone. Except Perkins. That guy's a joke.

Perkins - and Rondo - and Allen
Nothing I like better than when marginal (at best) ballplayers bogart the swagger that has been earned by their talented teammates. Congratulations to Perkins, Rondo and Tony Allen for grabbing onto the coattails of Garnett, Pierce and Ray Allen. Here's hoping for a dose of karma and one way tickets for them to New York.

I read that first sentence...
...and wondered if you were talking about Mikki Moore. ;)

You're confused
He just gets "real" excited for his teammates.

I realize Jeff Clark has to write something
But couldn't he have at least watched the game first?

KG's no saint
But that's hardly news to Kings fans who recall the Minnesota/Sacramento playoff series from a few years back.  That was about the time KG had started goaltending any shot that was taken after the whistle, so that opposing shooters wouldn't know if the shot was going to go in or not.

What options did the Kings have
They are playing a much better team, who are playing well, who beat them pretty soundly last time they played.

Frankly whats wrong if the Kings decided to mix it up a bit, they looked awful in the second period.  At least they went down showing something, last year they would have just mailed it in with no effor at all

I loved Section 214s point about the marginal guys who love to run it when they should be greatful that they are A. in the league and B. on a great team.  I remember when Samaki Walker when he was on the Lakers made some comments about Webber who remarked that until Walker played on the Lakers he didn't do much himself

KG
Before KG was a Celtic, didn't he have altercations with Perkins and Elson? He's cocky. I recall Allen having problems with KG's swearing during practices

by kingme on Dec 27, 2007 10:28 PM PST   0 recs

Hold Judgement on KG
Granted, he does talk a bit and he;'s cocky.. But watch this video and you will always RESPECT the man. A good example of why us working folk dish out cash to watch these guys COMPETE! Only if everyone in the L cared about the game as much as Garnett does.

Kings-Sixers tonight
Hi everyone, first comment on this site, I just signed up

Waiting for tonight's game vs Sixers, I would like to have some revenge after you got your first W on the road in Philadelphia...let's hope Miller & Moore won't shoot a combined 19/23 from the field again, LOL

I can hardly believe that someone is still using the Queens/Kings joke, that wasn't much funny even in 2002 by the way...

That's just as much unbelievable as the fact that dear old John "Summer League" Salmons became a player there, LOL

Can't wait to read your recap after the game, keep up the good work, great blog indeed

Ricky

hi
Welcome. Well, Shaq isn't really that funny. Yeah, I've heard from Philly fans that Salmons only shows up in summer leagues. Good luck. Let's hope Louis Williams doesn't dunk on Moore
