Unfree Ron-Ron

Can we suspend Ron Artest?

Seriously. I know he's an elite defender and a good player, but c'mon. The last four games: at New Jersey, Ron plays and dominates the ball, Kings lose in an incredibly ugly and uninteresting way; at Indiana, Ron sits, Kevin Martin dominates the ball, Kings look lovely on offense and win walking away; at Philadelphia, Ron plays and dominates the ball, Kings lose in an incredibly ugly and uninteresting way; vs Charlotte, Ron sits, Kevin Martin and Mike Bibby dominate the ball, Kings look lovely on offense and win walking away. I have no doubt Ron will play Friday against the Lakers. Hmm... wonder what's going to happen to the Kings' offense. Anyone seen Fibonacci around? I have a question for him.

And this is what it has come to for us: We see the Kings in their McDonald's All-American glory and we get pissed because it's not like that every night. I don't expect the team to shoot 62% every night, that's silly. And I don't expect John Salmons to keep the Magic Johnson impersonation alive or Francisco Garcia to make it rain like Pacman or even Brad Miller to resemble a low-post beast.

It wasn't the result I got so hyped about last night, it wasn't the huge totals for Martin and Garcia, or the incredible saltrub from the Garbagetime Globetrotters (Quincy Douby and Justin Williams, natch). It was the brand of basketball the Kings seemingly discovered they could play. Get up and down the court, get to the rim, get to the line (50 FTAs!) - or get out of the way.

With Ron-Ron, that brand is impossible and frankly miscast. Artest is best in the half-court, both on offense and defense. Martin flourishes on offense either way, but it should be clear that Bibby, Salmons, and Ronnie F. Price would prefer to pick up the pace. (It's strange that Bibby thrives in the fast-pace setting, considering he's one of the slower point guards in the league. His stroke is so much more deadly on that transition pull-up three or curling at "full speed" off a pick. When they play the half-court game, he spots up too much. It's showed this season.)

The only ways to establish this (successful, entertaining) brand as the Kings identity going forward this season is to a) get Ron to buy into it somehow, or b) discipline him for having a sore knee.

Sadly, options a nor b are going to happen. (B would be out of line, anyways. I don't doubt players' injuries, unless that player is Peja Stojakovic.) So, we're going to be stuck with the Philadelphia game, the New Jersey game. Can't wait. Enjoy.

Napear Sucks
I couldn't stand to watch the final part of the game last night. I was on Grant Napear overload. God that guy is a pain. Particularly when paired with Reynolds. I gave up when Brad made a nice pass to Martin right at the basket for two and those bozos credited it all to Bibby. What is it, are they on the take with that guy? Don't the Maloofs realize how they reflect on this town's image. We will always be a cowtown with those two announcing. They should be made to sit down and listen to 100 hours of tapes of Bill King doing the Warriors.

Re: Napear Sucks
I concur. They are putrid, geeky, homers. But they always spout company line, so they are still there.

Re: Napear Sucks
Also, isn't Grant kind-of harsh to Jerry sometimes? Last night, they were talking about GDub's shoulder pads and Grant said a lot of players where something similar on their ribs these days. Jerry self-deprecatingly said he needs one for his midsection. Grant said they don't have one that big.

Ha ha, whatever. But Jerry's getting close to the age where it's fairly rude to call him fat on TV, right? And from what I've heard, the guys aren't best bud pals on the road... Grant said on the radio the other day he usually stays in his hotel room and eats alone on the road. (Maybe his wife was listening?)

Re: Napear Sucks
I think the jury is out. I heard Grant saying on KHTK just a bit ago that Jerry is hysterical and off the air and he is even funnier. Very buddy-buddy. Hmm. Is Grant faking the funk?

Jerry always has a moment early in the broadcast where his voice isn't warmed up and he does the absolte best Mister Haney (Green Acres) impersonation. It is pretty sad that I actually look forward to that. It is sadder that I wait for the Newman Lasik plug so I can say, "Go to camera three to show Coach Flounder." Has it come to this???

He's pesky I tell ya.

Re: Napear Sucks
You have to assume that they get these guys at minimum wage. Of course Jerry has other duties, the Monarchs and the lower floor bathroom cleaning, but Grant is not worth minimum wage. One thing that would help is not to show his face on the interviews. He always looks like he just bit into a green persimmon and he is about as funny as a funeral. When they write the next initiative for funding the new arena, a real incentive would be a clause requiring the firing of these bozos. It would have a much better chance of passing.

Most people have a forehead. Grant has a fivehead.

He should sell advertising space...is GoldenPalace.com still alive and kicking?

Re: Napear Sucks
We should all sit and listen to 100 hours of Bill King on the Warriors and then 100 more with Bill King on the A's. He is without equal, and a delight. We were devastated when he passed away.

Re: Napear Sucks
Bill King is great, but we should all relish the Jon Miller. Ah, opening day in mere weeks...

Re: Napear Sucks
The worst thing about Jon Miller? Joe Morgan. 'Nuff said.

Best thing abot Joe Morgan? He doesn't invade Giants radio.

Re: Napear Sucks
The Giants have been blessed with some great play-by-play guys the last two decades.  Hank Greenwald, Ted Robinson, Kuip, Jon Miller. Fleming is decent, but almost inadequate by Giants' standards.

Forget Opening Day TZ, the first spring training game is at 12:05 today...KNBR baby!

IF YOU DONT LIKE GRANT NAPEAR AND JERRY REYNOLDS YOU DONT LIKE KINGS BASKETBALL.

That is all!

Re: Unfree Ron-Ron
Interesting post, TZ.

Certainly, the Kings are much more fun to watch when they open the game up, move the ball, and run.  And when they shoot well, this style gives them a good chance to win. Artest simply doesn't fit into that type of offensive scheme because he has no idea how to play without the ball.

The area where the Kings missed Artest last night was on defense. The Kings' effort was horrible. Charlotte conducted a layup/dunk drill. We were lucky to win. (I think shooting +60% is lucky.) You can't let the visiting team shoot 50%+ on your home court and expect to win.

Re: Unfree Ron-Ron
I think the primary reason the Pacers parted ways with Artest was that Rick Carlisle came to the same conclusion TZ and others have reached.  Ron Artest plays "street ball" and Carlisle apparently was unable to motivate Ron to alter his style.

Earlier this season, Artest was jacking up threes and after much cricicism, he was able to respond in a positive way by making better decisions.  Surely, six coaches must have observed him in practice enough to know whether he can become a better team player on offense.

Re: Unfree Ron-Ron
Oh yah...Ron.

I was pretty psyched to hear he was out because I wanted to see if the rest of the team would pull it off again without him. Last year we needed him. This year not so much. He has no plans to play with or evolve with the rest of the team.

Bee: "People are like, Why are you shooting threes, why do you shoot fadeaways? Even some of our (media) people, like, Why is Artest taking wild shots?" he said. "But those are the shots I take. I practice those shots. I practice going to the hole, practice doing everything. If I get healthy, next year's going to be even worse. God willing, I stay injury-free and have a hell of a season."

He's pesky I tell ya.

Re: Unfree Ron-Ron
No, what you are smelling is the gas produced by the two nitwit announcers.
