TZ's World: Let's Face It: Marty Mac is an Asshat

(As I said in a comment to the Hart news, I spent a good portion of Thursday composing a response to Marty McNeal's unfortunate column calling for the head of Eric Musselman. My creative juices had been expended, apparently, because I kept wadding up the paper and tossing it at the waste basket. Consider this a last-ditch effort.)

Just heard Thursday morning that Martin McNeal, who gained local notoriety as the go-to columnist for players who need a yankpiece in The Bee, wrote a column.

McNeal oftens talks about people being 'fake.' For all you who don't know, make sure you go out of your way to make a good impression on the local columnist and suck up to him and your players and don't be a punk.

Speaking of punks, McNeal said he thinks Kings head coach Eric Musselman should be fired at the end of the season. Nevermind that Musselman has coached only 57 games for the Kings, and has a three-year deal with the team. Nevermind that Musselman hasn't been playing with a full deck all season, with two cancerous stars, no size in the frontcourt, and a very young bench.

Why does McNeal have beef with Musselman? Since Marty refuses to lay it out plainly in his column, allow me:

  1. In January, Jason Hart and his agent Bill Neff came to McNeal to complain about Musselman's "treatment" of Hart. The bad treatment? No playing time. The Kings told Hart in training camp he wasn't really in their plans, yet it still came as a shock to Hart and Neff that Hart wasn't getting any burn. Musselman reportedly told Neff that the call to play Quincy Douby and John Salmons came for higher up. Geoff Petrie and the Maloofs denied this. McNeal wrote a big column focused on this and everyone got all huffy.
  2. A few days after the Hart/Neff saga, McNeal spent a column relaying another perceived Musselman slight. Apparently, months prior at some function or another, McNeal asked Musselman for his cell phone number. Musselman said he didn't know it. From this, McNeal extrapolated that Musselman is 'fake,' a 'liar,' and a smarmy jerk who doesn't realize how he comes off. It is later discovered that portions of McNeal's column - basic information, in fact - are incorrect.
Sorry if I'm not surprised McNeal of all people would call for the coach's head because of some minor perceived slights.

Now, because of Musselman's clearly sarcastic comments following the Philadelphia game - and honestly, you'd have to be autistic not to realize the sarcasm in Musselman's comments - McNeal is pushing the 'dude is fake' meme as hard as he can. He's adding a couple, too:

"And it's a comment like this that makes me feel this guy just can't tell the truth." ...

"Like his team, he just doesn't seem to have the talent to get it done."

This is buffoonery, complete asshattery. You have beef with dude, whatever. Think what you will. But you're the NBA columnist for this paper, so instead of ever f*cking actually analyzing the NBA, you use your personal beef to fuel a call for someone's head? You use your position and experience not to educate the reader about what exactly this coach is doing wrong, but just to insult him for 500 words? Seriously, the next time McNeal coherently spells out some Xs and Os in his column, it'll be the first time.

McNeal's sole role in the Sacramento media landscape is to slurp players publicly, to give them some good PR when things are rough. He's adding to those vast responsibilities playing out personal vendettas for the world to see. Kudos, Marty.

There are problems with Musselman. His offensive system should be in much better shape than it is, and his rotation is a complete clusterf*ck most nights. Analyze that stuff, please! Why don't you tell us what's going wrong? Why don't you tell us where the Kings should be better, Marty?

Maybe like the team he "covers," he just doesn't have the talent to get it done.

Amen TZ, exactly what I was thinking. Marty Mac is a hack - he stunk doing the Kings beat, so now he's little more than a glorified sports gossip columnist.

I treat him like Charles Barkley now...I wince when our opinions align, but I'm reassured when they differ. And they differ on a pretty regular basis.

I'm not ready to throw Muss under the bus just yet.  I think he is an improvement over Adelman.  Watching the Bobcats game brings back how Adelman ruined Wallace's time with the Kings by trying to force him into being a clone of Peja.

"Mary" Mac is an ass!!!!  He needs to go with his buddy R.E. Graswich and write articles on old ladies crossing the streat.  I mean really, when was the last meaningful article he wrote?

Re:McNeal Column
If my memory serves me, in that same edition of the Bee, Breton had a column also dealing with the Kings in which he said just the opposite. He said it is too early to reach conclusions about the coaching. So take your pick. It will be interesting to see how Hart fares. It would be rather embarrassing if he goes down there and becomes the second coming of Kobe. Unlikely, but you never know. Petrie is not known for moving too quickly so I think you are going to see The Musselman given every opportunity to prove himself.

Asshat?
It makes me laugh just see "Asshat" on the screen. It's even more fun to say it.  Go ahead: try it. Trust me, you'll at least chuckle.

But, I digress.....

So, I was just thinking that I'm not certain that it would be possible for a paper to have a lamer trifecta than Aileen, Marcos, and Marty.

They suck.

Hard.

Asshat  :-)

Re: Asshat?
Yeah, the trifecta is pretty iffy. Kreidler was good, and Howard-Cooper is the saving grace.

I chose asshat over a number of other, possibly libelous choices.

Re: Asshat?
Sucky newspaper columnists, sucky television announcers, semi-sucky radio play-by-play guy. Sucksucksucksucksucksucksuck.

What's the deal with Kreidler anyways? Why not fire the other three, give all that salary to Kreidler and let him write two columns a day? Or split it with Scott-Howard Cooper?

I guess Kreidler and Cooper don't shit-stir enough for the Bee. That's why I only get the Bee on weekends - I need something to put under my kindling.

Re: Asshat?
Kriedler is no longer with the Bee. Too bad. He was the best they had. He just put out a book called "Four Days to Glory" about two Iowa high school boys trying to become 4-time state high school champions, (which is a Herculean feat in high school wrestling.) I just finished the book. It was excellent. Wrestling is a pretty amazing sport with regard to physical conditioning and mental toughness and Kriedler captures its essence at a personal and fundamental level.

Anyway, this is a basketball blog, so I'll shut the f*ck up now.....  :-)

Good to hear you finished the book. I'm going to try to pick it up soon.

Asshat
ASSHAT!

That did feel awesome. How can our local paper have such a terrible sports section?  Becasue instead of reporters, they have columnists.  Instead of news, they report whatever they feel.

As a hilarious side note, one of the best things about this Kings season is how much Grant Napear rips the Bee, yet still has to plug it on TV because they are a sponsor of the team.

There you are TZ! I was worried that you would miss the opportunity Marty laid forth. I even used "fake the funk" in a post to try to draw you out. "Asshatery" is damn good but "slurp players publically" gets my vote for creative slam du jour. :o)

Grant just so happened to call the CDShow last night where Grant once again bashed the Bee's Sports section, said Marty has a vendetta against Muss and then said he (Grant) and Marty are good friends. He still wonders why the Bee's people won't come on his show.

Marty then came on (did you see that coming?) to defend his piece. Can we combine my favorites and add "public asskissery" to the list? After listening to the Grant tape Marty says he is not Grant's friend. He went all over the Jason Hart agent thing and the cell phone number deal again. No vendetta. But he was sure to mention that after the Hart piece he was at a game and called Muss over and Muss just gave a peace sign and pretty much ignored him.

You may now return to your home rooms unless you have work study or are on the Prom committee. Be sure to come cheer your Kings tonight against the Lakers. Remember, if you can't be an athlete...be an athletic supporter!

He's pesky I tell ya.

Re: ding-ding-ding
Wow... I haven't listened to Carmichael Dave in ages, probably since last spring. (My job no longer requires my presence at 10 pm.) Wish I would've caught that. Too bad they'll never put it on the website...

Funny how Jason Hart ruined the Grant Napear-Marty Mac friendship.
