They told us so.
We didn't believe them.
They told us he'd be a headache, more trouble than he was worth.
They said he'll never change - once a thug, always a thug.
They called him a ticking timebomb, they called us risk takers, they told us to enjoy the honeymoon.
They acknowledged his excellent game, but emphasized his historically checkered judgment.
We ignored it. We said we'd deal with that when it came. We enjoyed the moment - the inspiring run to end 2005-06, the hellaciously fun playoff run against the Spurs, the offseason of wild, wild dreams.
When he started calling out teammates, we got a bit nervous. When his dogs got taken away for abuse, we shook our heads. When he he told the coach and his fans to ..., we got worried.
And now that he's been arrested for spousal abuse? We realize we got burned.
Things were on a definite downslide w/r/t the Artest Era before today. Now, the damage is irrevocable. It's hard to cheer a locker room cancer, a guy who doesn't take care of his dogs, a general asshole. It's more difficult - impossible - to cheer a guy who hits his wife.
He'll play again this season in the royal purple and white. But the era has ended. The love affair is over.

Re: They told us so.
(There's also a player option for 2009, but he'd certainly get signed to another team if they cut him. Thus, no money from us beyond next year.)

not saying that's what'll happen here, cause we don't know the full story yet. but man, this isn't what the Kings need right now...

Not that it matters. If the Kings dumped him there would be a bidding war for his services.

At least Coach Musselman can now assure Marty NcNeal and Bill Neff that he knows where Ron is--IN JAIL.

Re: They told us so.
That being said, I do not have a very hard time believing something crazy went down, as (like BIll Simmons) I have no trouble believing anything I hear about him. If somebody told me that Ron had retired to become an accomplished figure skater, I would believe it. The same is true here, and it only furthers my issue with Petrie not trading him before the deadline.
I understand you get less value in trades at the deadline when you're the one selling, and that makes a lot of sense in the Bibby case. But I think it's clear this team needs to be rebuilt, and it was clear a long time ago, and that KevMar should be the focus of said rebuilding. Artest being a "chucker" does nothing to help Martin develop, and you knew sooner or later something like this would happen.
Trading Ron-Ron at the deadline, him being devalued or not, would've at least gotten some value while his stock was hovering in the "not-so-crazy" area of the Ron-o-Meter. Now we'd be lucky to get Corey Maggete's pet iguana for a nutjob who also now happens to be an (alleged) woman-beater.

Re: They told us so.
I think any salary cap relief + any draft pick would've been cool with me. Honestly. I think it's been clear the time has come for rebuilding. I say let Martin be the go-to guy for the team, learn how he's defensed as the no-doubt number 1 and grow because of it, and give guys like Douby and Garcia get loads of playing time (cuz who knows what we have with them unless they play).
While I would never ever suggest tanking a season because I abhor the thought of not trying to win, a team that had rid themselves of Artest (and maybe Miller) with young guys just learning how to play in the league would have competed for the Oden-Durant chance. And, if not, you still try and trade Bibby after the season when you'll get more value, maybe get a decent draft pick in the deal, and then package it to move up.
Either way, while I adore Petrie for most of his moves, I think he erred greatly in thinking Ron-Ron wouldn't do something bad (and this among the worst) and not trading him when he had a chance to get any value, and not recognizing he should clear the obvious dead weight now to get the younger guys some experience so with a shrewd free agent signing or two, a Bibby trade, and a nice draft pick (dare I hope Oden - finally a shot blocker!) they could have been good in a few years.

Re: They told us so.
I agree though, about dealing this knucklehead. This is a black mark (and in my opinion, they are adding up) on Geoff Petrie/the Maloofs. This guy should have been dealt, either during last offseason or at the trade deadline.
Most of us here felt that we couldn't sit on the Ron-Ron coaster for too long. Now the franchise would be lucky to get ten cents on the dollar for him.

Maybe Ron can have "Do Not Enter" shaved into the back of his head in case he does jail time.

Re: They told us so.
Step away from your torches and pitchforks for a second here.
A considerable amount of handwringing has occurred here... I told you so, we knew it was coming, this is Ron-Ron, etc. If you believe that to be true, than you must also believe that his wife was privy to the fact that her husband is nuts too. If she knew he was nuts, and is still there, it implies that she is;
a.) nuts too
b.) able to deal with his antics
c.) no slouch when it comes to defending herself or even dishing out some abuse
The law enforcement proceedure regarding DV is very specific,
If a call is made, and the combatants are identified, SOMEONE IS GOING TO JAIL. This is done to protect both parties, usually a slight cooling off period brings most people back to sanity.
I know I am in the minority here who really feel that personal stuff is just that, personal. It IS hard to ignore a celebrity getting arrested. I am going to wait until judgement is passed by the courts. A person has plenty of time after judgement to be penalized. If everything went down as reported Ron ARREST needs help, and obviously, so does his wife.

Re: They told us so.
And you can correct me if I'm wrong, but the Placer County Sherrif's office makes a domestic violence arrest if they have evidence that said domestic violence occured. It's not an automatic "someone goes to jail rule". The reports state that the woman did show some injuries, even if they did not require medical treatment.
Maybe Ron is an innocent party in all of this. But his past behavior has taken away the benefit of the doubt in my eyes. Innocent or guilty, that will be determined by a court of law. But the man is only 27 years old and look at his body of work.
On the court, he's had plenty of dustups, suspensions, fines - including creating one of the worst scenes of violence between players and fans this country has seen. Off the court, there's been domestic violence, animal neglect, his recent "suck my ####" comment, and plenty of other odd behaviors - including his need to take time off during the basketball season to promote his new record album.
It's time to let the guy be someone else's problem.
