They told us so.

We didn't believe them.

They told us he'd be a headache, more trouble than he was worth.

They said he'll never change - once a thug, always a thug.

They called him a ticking timebomb, they called us risk takers, they told us to enjoy the honeymoon.

They acknowledged his excellent game, but emphasized his historically checkered judgment.

We ignored it. We said we'd deal with that when it came. We enjoyed the moment - the inspiring run to end 2005-06, the hellaciously fun playoff run against the Spurs, the offseason of wild, wild dreams.

When he started calling out teammates, we got a bit nervous. When his dogs got taken away for abuse, we shook our heads. When he he told the coach and his fans to ..., we got worried.

And now that he's been arrested for spousal abuse? We realize we got burned.

Things were on a definite downslide w/r/t the Artest Era before today. Now, the damage is irrevocable. It's hard to cheer a locker room cancer, a guy who doesn't take care of his dogs, a general asshole. It's more difficult - impossible - to cheer a guy who hits his wife.

He'll play again this season in the royal purple and white. But the era has ended. The love affair is over.

Re: They told us so.
Not being a capologist, what kind of hit is there if the team just cut his sorry ass loose?

Re: They told us so.
His trade value has plummeted.  Maybe - Jason Kidd was able to get traded after what happened in Phoenix, but that was Kidd, who is semi-sane.

Re: They told us so.
They'd just have to pay his remaining salary - $7.8 million next year. That would still count against the cap, as would the remaining amount of his $7.1 million this year.

(There's also a player option for 2009, but he'd certainly get signed to another team if they cut him. Thus, no money from us beyond next year.)

Re: They told us so.
most pro sports contracts have some kind of provision which nullifies the agreement if the player is convicted of a felony and jailed.

not saying that's what'll happen here, cause we don't know the full story yet.  but man, this isn't what the Kings need right now...

Re: They told us so.
Yes all contract have a morals clause. But I can't recall any ever being enforced.

Not that it matters. If the Kings dumped him there would be a bidding war for his services.

Maybe Stern will allow the Maloofs and Artest to move to Las Vegas by themselves. Glad to Otis29 on board! Nothing says class like beating a woman, welcome to Portland Kings fans.
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: They told us so.
Gee ron got arrested for hitting a woman presumably his wife. Wow im shocked totally shocked. This is where ive say publicly (probably the last time) that the kings need to swing a deal for andre miller in the offseason & really pray that mike bibby opts out. Popular or not.

Yeah, at this point, I'd rather have an injured guy than one who is facing likely jail time.

yeah that is a tough one...one who can't get on the court because he hits his wife and doesn't feed his dogs anything but stereo parts.  the other one can't get on the court because he had a bad dream and wet himself and is scared to leave the hotel room because the boogy man might get him.  boy, we know how to pick 'em.

Re: They told us so.
Well actually i dont have a problem trading peja for artest even though i think peja gets blamed for things that arent exactly his fault. What i do think is that artest is always a problem for everybody & with a potential superstar like kevin martin why would you inflict that sorta damage on kevin for? Besides without artest bibby plays better giving him perhaps (pray on both knees) more reason to opt out.

Re: They told us so.
We all knew it was a matter of time.  With all the crap Ron-Ron has shoveled on the team this year with his mystery knee problems, his 101 Dalmation act, and his cancerous, team-killing leadership, I can't believe the Kings didnt make a bigger push to move this guy while he still had any value.  Any chance to move him for cents on the dollar this summer is gone.  Looks like we will have to ride out one more year of Ron's circus insanity and wait until next summer for the guy's contract to run out.  Let's all hope that the city is not a smoldering pile of rubble by then.
Damn you Robert Horry!!!

Re: They told us so.
The domestic violence portion of the incident is serious enought but I'm more concerned about what may have transpired  earlier.  In the preliminary report, domestic violenace was mentioned but Artest was also arrested for "using force or violence to prevent her from reporting a crime."

At least Coach Musselman can now assure Marty NcNeal and Bill Neff that he knows where Ron is--IN JAIL.

Re: They told us so.
Well, first and foremost, I know since it's Ron-Ron, it's hard to remember this, but he is innocent till proven guilty. I will always remember this since I am a proud Duke-hater and jumped to all sorts of conclusions when their whole situation went done, and feel all kinds of foolish now.

That being said, I do not have a very hard time believing something crazy went down, as (like BIll Simmons) I have no trouble believing anything I hear about him. If somebody told me that Ron had retired to become an accomplished figure skater, I would believe it. The same is true here, and it only furthers my issue with Petrie not trading him before the deadline.

I understand you get less value in trades at the deadline when you're the one selling, and that makes a lot of sense in the Bibby case. But I think it's clear this team needs to be rebuilt, and it was clear a long time ago, and that KevMar should be the focus of said rebuilding. Artest being a "chucker" does nothing to help Martin develop, and you knew sooner or later something like this would happen.

Trading Ron-Ron at the deadline, him being devalued or not, would've at least gotten some value while his stock was hovering in the "not-so-crazy" area of the Ron-o-Meter. Now we'd be lucky to get Corey Maggete's pet iguana for a nutjob who also now happens to be an (alleged) woman-beater.

Re: They told us so.
Gots me 1 question out of all this mrnearcanadian: who would we have gotten for mr artest??? And please dont say maggette. He's just as much a pain in the ass as artest is. Anyway i was just curious if you had anybody else out there in mind??? Good idea because i agree. But not for maggette...oh god not for maggette.

by pookeyguru on Mar 5, 2007 4:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: They told us so.
I actually do not have anybody specific in mind. I don't actually think Maggette either as I don't like his contract and (as mentioned before) I don't like Dookies. I just threw his name in cuz of the repeated rumors about the two.

I think any salary cap relief + any draft pick would've been cool with me. Honestly. I think it's been clear the time has come for rebuilding. I say let Martin be the go-to guy for the team, learn how he's defensed as the no-doubt number 1 and grow because of it, and give guys like Douby and Garcia get loads of playing time (cuz who knows what we have with them unless they play).

While I would never ever suggest tanking a season because I abhor the thought of not trying to win, a team that had rid themselves of Artest (and maybe Miller) with young guys just learning how to play in the league would have competed for the Oden-Durant chance. And, if not, you still try and trade Bibby after the season when you'll get more value, maybe get a decent draft pick in the deal, and then package it to move up.

Either way, while I adore Petrie for most of his moves, I think he erred greatly in thinking Ron-Ron wouldn't do something bad (and this among the worst) and not trading him when he had a chance to get any value, and not recognizing he should clear the obvious dead weight now to get the younger guys some experience so with a shrewd free agent signing or two, a Bibby trade, and a nice draft pick (dare I hope Oden - finally a shot blocker!) they could have been good in a few years.

[Tongue planted firmly in cheek] - We are so much more than near Canada or Niagara Falls in Buffalo! Have you not had experienced the heavenly joy of a real, made-in-Buffalo chicken wing? (Aside from being a great meal, also the prime reason for above-average obesity in Buffalo.)

Re: They told us so.
Mr buffalo wing it wasnt actually intended as an insult (is there something inherently wrong in being canadian???). Nor was i saying that you wanted maggette (i keep forgetting he played for the dookies too). Im just saying that without a tangible rumor (which doesnt really mean much becuz usually rumors dont apply to the kings as petrie doesnt leak his trade rumors to the press until the deal is actually done) its hard to say what the kings could have gotten for artest. Im still happy the kings let bonzi walk (no matter the circumstance) and im still unhappy that the maloofs decided that they knew more about basketball than geoff petrie. I still believe they did the deal for artest & not petrie really. Also if bibby walks (a possibility as he has a player option to opt out..& i dont see bibby's time being anything but marked from here on out) isnt the cap room more useful than anything you could get back in a trade????? 1 last thing i dont eat buffalo wings. Not your fault or anybody else's, I just have a wierd sense of taste.

Re: They told us so.
Mr buffalo wing dude i was kidding too (even tho it seemed like i was being serious...well about the canadian part anyway..i dont eat wings cuz i dont really like it for some strange reason). Btw now that i know youre good humored (which is always cool) it only invites more bad fat buffalo humor of which i have no personal reference to...but can find some bullshit way to link it. Kinda like how do you feel about that 17$$$$lottery ticket you might have won in bruce almighty? Bad example but all i can think of @ the moment. I know less about buffalo than you might about sacramento. Except 1 thing. The traffic in sac really sucks.

Re: They told us so.
Well, he will (most likely) have his day in court, and that is where he will receive his presumption of innocence. No such restrictions apply here on the interwebs.

I agree though, about dealing this knucklehead. This is a black mark (and in my opinion, they are adding up) on Geoff Petrie/the Maloofs. This guy should have been dealt, either during last offseason or at the trade deadline.

Most of us here felt that we couldn't sit on the Ron-Ron coaster for too long. Now the franchise would be lucky to get ten cents on the dollar for him.

He's pesky I tell ya.

Re: They told us so.
Pyro if you read bill simmons (if for nothing else entertainment value) then you might kill the magoofs for killing a potential deal to the lakers with bibby involved that had expiring deals coming back. I dont know that i would be willing to gamble that bibby would opt out but i know that trading bibby to the lakers (a team that the media dubbed to have a rivalry...getting into a fight doesnt constitute such) would have been smart given that the price would have been cheap for the lakers & the kings would have gotten expiring deals for a guy they were hoping would walk anyway.

I'm trying to understand how this works...Petrie gets credit for the good moves and the Maloof's get credit for the bad ones? Weird, I thought they were a team...

Re: They told us so.
There has never been a question as to who made the Artest deal. The Maloofs are the ones who talked him into coming when Ron-Ron c-webbed up and said he wouldn't play here. Petrie would have probably made another trade to get rid of Peja but this one can't fall on his shoulders. Petrie should be blamed for not dealing this asshole before the deadline.

Maybe Ron can have "Do Not Enter" shaved into the back of his head in case he does jail time.

We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: They told us so.
BTW I would like to point out something said on 1140 a few mins ago. If in fact ron artest hit his wife this is nothing new & given the tumultous nature of their relationship this might not be the deathkiss that everyone might think it is when trying to trade him over the course of the summer. Given that this relationship has proven to be a problem in the past i dont know if this is much of anything but a continuing occurence. That being said trading him may not be any more of a difficulty than it could have been a month ago.

Re: They told us so.
Does anyone who posts here have any experience with DV cases other that what you have watched on CSI? Don't start in on me, I am not defending domestic violence. There is no excuse for striking a woman. Your best bet is to just run away from them when they are angry. Although, lets be honest, more women have deserved striking than dogs deserved starving. Just kidding!!!
Step away from your torches and pitchforks for a second here.
A considerable amount of handwringing has occurred here... I told you so, we knew it was coming, this is Ron-Ron, etc. If you believe that to be true, than you must also believe that his wife was privy to the fact that her husband is nuts too. If she knew he was nuts, and is still there, it implies that she is;
a.) nuts too
b.) able to deal with his antics
c.) no slouch when it comes to defending herself or even dishing out some abuse
The law enforcement proceedure regarding DV is very specific,
If a call is made, and the combatants are identified, SOMEONE IS GOING TO JAIL. This is done to protect both parties, usually a slight cooling off period brings most people back to sanity.
I know I am in the minority here who really feel that personal stuff is just that, personal. It IS hard to ignore a celebrity getting arrested. I am going to wait until judgement is passed by the courts. A person has plenty of time after judgement to be penalized. If everything went down as reported Ron ARREST needs help, and obviously, so does his wife.

Re: They told us so.
Thing is dccamp, it's not an either/or situation. You can hold the view that Ron and his wife need help AND that he should no longer be a member of the Sacramento Kings. One does not negate the other.

And you can correct me if I'm wrong, but the Placer County Sherrif's office makes a domestic violence arrest if they have evidence that said domestic violence occured. It's not an automatic "someone goes to jail rule". The reports state that the woman did show some injuries, even if they did not require medical treatment.

Maybe Ron is an innocent party in all of this. But his past behavior has taken away the benefit of the doubt in my eyes. Innocent or guilty, that will be determined by a court of law. But the man is only 27 years old and look at his body of work.

On the court, he's had plenty of dustups, suspensions, fines - including creating one of the worst scenes of violence between players and fans this country has seen. Off the court, there's been domestic violence, animal neglect, his recent "suck my ####" comment, and plenty of other odd behaviors - including his need to take time off during the basketball season to promote his new record album.

It's time to let the guy be someone else's problem.
