Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.

No link yet, but a reporter at the press conference just said the Kings have 'excused' Ron Artest from the team indefinitely due to his Monday arrest on suspicion of domestic abuse. (And reporters somewhat gleefully discussed this with each other at the tail end of the presser, at least on my News10.com feed.)

More news from the presser:

  • The alleged abuse involved Artest pushing his wife to the ground several times.
  • Artest tried to leave in his H2 after the alleged abuse went down, but his wife bashed in his windshield with a cooking pot.
  • The 911 tape will be released Tuesday.
  • Artest bailed himself out at 2:30 pm.
  • Police have been to Artest's house on a similar matter once before, though it was determined no crime was committed at that time.
  • Artest was fully cooperative with authorities.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
I'm waiting for Marty Mac to spin this as Musselman's fault somehow.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
What do you mean? Are you saying it's NOT Musselman's fault? He should have had better control of his players.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
Musselman shouldn't have to remind his players to NOT push down their significant others.  That should be common sense, Louis.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
That's why sarcasm doesn't always read well. Of course Muss has nothing to do with this, unless under DUI, he drove Artest home.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
I wonder if Ron used his one phone call to get in touch with Scoop Jackson?

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
Scoop would defend him after another 'ron ron' moment????

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
By the way, I'm listening to the new ESPN channel here in Sacramento (AM 1320), and they continue to advertise the Denver-Sacramento game on Sunday. When they mention Sacramento, it's "The Sacramento Kings and Ron Artest".

It's kind of funny really, to hear the ad right after they do the sports update of Artest's arrest.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
So she chased after him with a frying pan and bashed in his windshield.  Ron should have dumped the biatch long ago.  I know how this is.  I've been down this road myself.  Difference was, I knew enough to get out when I started fighting back.  Mine was so mean she bashed in my windshield with her bare fist!

Really? Dave? I'm not so impressed with some of your recent posts. Let's discuss.

All I'm trying to say is let's get all the facts in before we crucify him.

I agree, let's find out what happened for sure before we jump to conclusions.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
If this is the same DaveL from the usenet group, prepare for him to give Artest the benefit of the doubt to the bitter end.

If OJ Simpson was a King, DaveL would be helping him search for the real killer. :)

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
Funny you bring up OJ, I was just telling a friend that I wish that Ron would have escaped before the cops got to his house and picked up Reef to be his Al Cowlings and we would have got to see a slow speed chase down I-80. That would have been cool.
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
Mike Lamb just noted that Ron-Ron went through anger management counseling for domestic abuse a few years back. That's something I wasn't aware of...

I wasn't aware of that either.  But I do recall his girlfriend was arrested a few years ago for hitting him.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
One wonders if the Maloofs haven't already invested so much in Artest that they'll try to sweep this under the carpet, rather than kick him to the curb.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
At some point SJP & not today cuz it isnt the time we need to debate the maloof ownership. I think its very clear this is a fractured franchise & it starts @ the top. But your point is very sound & important. I just hope it doesnt get lost in the shuffle of thinking grant napear's opinion is important. HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
yeah.  I can see the appeal of Artest--the guy's one of my favorite players--but I don't understand why the Maloofs went so far out of their way to rebrand the Kings as Artest's team.

I mean, it's one thing to trade for a dude who's sick in the head and make him your centerpiece on the court...it's another thing entirely to call him out on radio commercials, put his likeness everywhere, say you never want to trade him, and visit the place he grew up in the offseason.

Keep in mind that they actually INTENSIFIED their relationship with Artest, even as the warning signs kept coming, and an alternative leader (KMart) started to emerge.  Why?!

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
Its interesting you point this out SJP in large part because they did this in response to them christening bibby as the 'next' guy. Peja has alot of detractors but the 1 thing he never did was tear a team apart out of selfishness(back injury or not be damned). Bibby & Artest both have these last few years.
I really do think the maloofs are classic examples of new owners who simply realized they had plenty of talent. Now they're starting to do things their way and its starting to reap the ripple effects of these actions. Just imagine had they signed bibby to a reasonable contract. Say 7 yrs for 55 million dollars??? Or Signed B-52 to about 8 million less dollars. Signed webber to a 100 million dollar contract? In the end as much as webber's feelings were hurt he would get over it.
The kings have since made deals or let players go as result of this fiscal mis-management. Why else take on kenny thomas' crappy deal??? I guess the point is that when the maloofs learn that the basketball people know more than they do about basketball they might realize how to get things done in the NBA.
As it is they've done some good things for the franchise (almost entirely for the ppl who run & promote the franchise..but hey i dont really care) but at the same time they still are showing they are new to this ownership thing. If the maloofs were smart owners they wouldnt have spent as much time acting like the city council (which believe me i have no particular love of despite having voted for members of it & also not voting for this past kings arena proposal) went out of their way to make sure an arena didnt get built. Look i know this is straying off topic but part of the problem is the maloofs hardly did the negoitations without acting some sort of entitlement out of obligation for spending money on the team. As much as im happy to see a winning team i dont get much out of it. In fact i struggle to see what i personally get out of a new arena. However thats hardly the issue with the maloofs & their ability to run a basketball team. When they learn how to run a basketball team with more savvy (in some ways they have...in ways that really matter they havent) the overall ability of this franchise to become strong will improve.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.
It's not all bad, Francisco Garcia should get a lot more burn.

Re: Ron 'excused' from the team indefinitely.

Without Artest, we have only 11 players (Potapenko doesn't count.), so I think it is a bad situation. We will lack the bench strength to compete effectively against the quality teams we will face down the stretch.

Yes, Garcia will get more burn but he picks up fouls in a hurry. The chance of making the playoffs w/o Artest are slim to none.

Is getting swept out of the first round of the playoffs going to help the rebuilding process? This may be a blessing in disguise.

Well, maybe this is the OUT the Maloofs need....
IF the Maloofs somehow, some way negotiated a "death penalty" clause that would void just such knuckleheaded and entirely too predictable dumbfuckery, then they can pull the rest of the change off the table and tell Ron-Ron bubye.  That would give them roster room and cap space to get someone promising and stable.  But this hurts....this really hurts, the way he was playing.  He can be an overpowering presence on defense.

Was it Gavin or Joe who said "We're gamblers!" when the Artest deal came down?

Re: Well, maybe this is the OUT the Maloofs need
Every contract has an out clause for off-the-court behavior Natomaser.  Teams are unwilling to exercise those clauses for fear of the litigation that would be sure to follow or the bigger threat of a black balling by player agents and the free agents they represent.  I'm sure that free agents aren't going to hold the team the sets the precedent for terminating contracts in the highest regard.
Damn you Robert Horry!!!

Re: Well, maybe this is the OUT the Maloofs need..
Nato @ this point id settle for the 2 knucklehead boy owners to stop making public statements that are  anything other than 'we support geoff' and 'we are doing what we can as a team to make sure this is handled properly'. You know all the owner stuff that usually comes with being 60 years old.

To hell with what Petrie says, to hell with what the Placer Co. sheriffs say, to hell with what Artest's wife says. I am waiting for the straight unbiased scoop. I want to know what Jerry Reyolds and Grant Napear say.
