Game 77: at Memphis

If you thought things were bad over here in Sactown, take a look at the hapless Memphis Grizzlies, for whom the playoffs were never even a twinkle in their eye. Yes, they may just have a pretty good chance at landing a Greg Oden or a Kevin Durant, but until this season is over, they're stuck with the team they have today, the one that has "led" them to a record 40 games below .500 (19-59), making the Kings 31-45 record look rather princely (note I didn't say King-like).

The Grizzlies are the worst team in the NBA, by record, period, and are a mere 45 1/2 games behind Dallas in the Southwest conference.

(Yes, Memphis is in the Southwest, you didn't know?)

But that doesn't mean they'll just roll over by any means. In the team's two previous meetings, the Kings won 115-111 at Arco, but lost 124-117 at Memphis in late January. Guess where tonight's game is being played? That's right. Memphis.

If those two games are any indication as to what to expect tonight, it'll be a high scoring duel. Tipoff is at 5 Pacific, 8 Eastern.

So....here's a question?
What precipated the rapid decline of the franchise(uhmmm.the grizz, I mean) other than injuries to Gasol?Trades?Contractitis? The same gatorade the Kings drink in the locker room at half-time?

Finally the Kings understand. K-Mart "isn't feeling well" so he along with Corliss(who owned Memphis earlier this season) and Douby (birth of first child) will be out tonight. GOOOOOOOOO Memphis! Bring on the lottery!

If you wanted the Kings to give up the ghost, it isn't happening yet. They've made 7 of their first 8 shots, and lead 14-12. Memphis has made 6 of 9.

Defense? What defense?

For those watching the game, and not channeling deity, it's worth noting the Kings pulled their 3rd quarter collapse ahead, and tanked in the 2nd quarter, making it a 53-48 battle by the end of the half.

Seriously, what was more likely, that the Kings would lead 39-15, or that they would be outscored 33-14 in the second?

What's that? You don't care? oh.

Artest is keeping up his horrible shooting. He finally made a shot in the 2nd quarter, and has only 5. Garcia leads with 15.

The 3rd quarter turned out not to be so bad. Kings up 81-70.

It'd have been nice to have a huge lead like we had after the 1st quarter, but we'll take it nonetheless.

Williams and Miller both have 12, meaning the Kings have 5 in double figures.

The same Yogi Stewart who I found myself stuck next to in a teeny Berkeley convenience store off Durant Avenue, where his backpack pretty much was at my head level? Re: Game 77: at Memphis
truthfully i dont hate the lakers...i hate the yankees angels rangers mariners white sox twins indians red sox..ok you get the point. Im kidding about the teams in mlb i hate but in a way im glad the yankees spend too much on their roster. With all of baseball focused on spending money it helps a bottom feeder like the a's (not in terms of making money just simply budget wise) find bargain's that otherwise dont exist. Frank Thomas took half a mil & parlayed it into 9 mil on the market. Seems like a good deal for him. Even better deal for the a's as they can convince players to perhaps play and sign there for less.

There is an analogy to the kings here. My point is that when teams become an upper echelon team ultimately players like to win. After all how many millions do you really need to live? Look @ a team like the spurs. Peter Holt (the owner) said he couldnt afford to pay the luxury tax therefore wouldnt overpay players. As a result SA is barely over the luxury tax despite several guys (parker manu duncan) in the middle of their contracts with  increasing figures every year. I would say the Spurs are a classic example of a small market team that has made the most of it's market share. They've won championships (a certain wake forest product didnt hurt there either) and have made money. A new arena didnt help either. I might point out that people in SA didnt vote for it until after the 99 season. Of course the spurs won a championship but Tim Duncan also said that he wouldnt consider staying unless the fans voted for a new arena. I doubt that makes sense (duncan was considering orlando as a FA...they have had failing arena measure's) but then again maybe fans took it to heart. Who knows. There has been alot of back & forth about the arena. But there takes some know how too. I dont worry about the kings vs the lakers business wise. There's no point comparing. However SA to Sac? Even with more tourism available in SA there is a bigger market in Sac. I clearly dont think the maloof's have taken full advantage of it. Therefore we are stuck in the situation there in.

My point rhondda is that the yankees are the evil empire. But they've also run @ a level no team in american sports can touch. The dynasties the yankees fielded for much of the middle part of the 20th century remain unmatched. I dont hate teams for hating purposes merely amusement purposes. I put the lakers in somewhat the same category and as such they arent immune to envy/hate/disgust by fans who dont support the lakers. Besides the spankees is better than the fakers :P.

Wow the Grizzlies are really putting it into tanker mode. From a 49-33 team to a likely 19-63 team, this has got to be trying for the Grizz this season. There are no more cupcakes left.

Re: Game 77: at Memphis
Why did Muss sit on using Garcia and Williams until we were out of the playoffs? (Aside the fact that he's a no-talent @$$ clown, of course)

Granted, Justin will make and has made numerous rookie mistakes in the games he's played, but the only way to get better is to get time, right?  And it's a statistical improbability that anyone can burn minutes on the floor more uselessly than Poodle. At least with Williams as goalie some players somewhere in their minds will think "Am I gonna get blocked" when driving effortlessly to the rim... or at least think "Is some over-charged rookie gonna clock my @$$?"

Re: Game 77: at Memphis
Remember Sam Mitchell @ the begining of the year? I know the raps have more talent & its younger. However nobody thought mitchell would do the job he did. He did it in part because he abandoned the approach of play the veterans win now approach and played his young players. They struggled somewhat early on. Now everybody see's them as the up & coming out east. Mitchell is proof that a coach can evolve. Maybe also proof that talent wins as much as a coach who evolves his game management. The question is which means more.

Disclaimr: This isnt an argument for Muss. This is arguing that Mitchell should have very strong support for COTY. Also maybe that appearances can be deceiving and that SVG should be heavily pursued (again?).
