Game 79 - at San Antonio

About a year ago, games with San Antonio brought a much different mood than tonight's match will.

The Kings were streaking, bearing down on the evil Lakers for the seventh seed after being left for dead at Thanksgiving and at Christmas and at MLK Day and at Groundhog's Day. The Kings were left for dead all those holidays this season, too; however, there was no February/March/April resurrection.

The tremors of anticipation last year when the series with the Spurs was to star was incredible, even for this franchise. 2003's playoffs came with a bright picture of positive anxiety, and anything was possible in that undeniably goosebump-ridden 2002 postseason.

But there's nothing for the team to play for tonight. Individual players, yes. Coaches, yes. But THE SACRAMENTO KINGS? Nope. Joe Folsom doesn't care about the final score. Elk Grove Mary won't seek out the score on tomorrow morning's scrawl. Auburn Bill and Roseville Bob won't even discuss the game at the water cooler tomorrow, unless Ronnie Price destroys someone's psyche or Ron Artest takes 55 shots.

But us diehards, we're still watching. It's not because we remember the glory of Aprils past. It's because we can't wait for the glory of Aprils, Mays and Junes to come. We know things will be different in a season's time, and hope will spring again. We know some of these pieces are the keys to the extension of said glory, be they Kevin Martin or Francisco Garcia or Justin Williams or even (gulp) Eric Musselman.

So Mike Bibby may get hot and Brad Miller may score a retro line. But they aren't why we're watching. We want to see glimpses of the future. Muss has delivered those so far these waning weeks... let's hope it continues.

Go, Kings.

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
the spurs are the better team...8 outta 10 times they win this game...period...maybe 10 outta times when you account for the fact that in the other 2 teams the spurs would make the kings beat them to get the W....

seriously id settle for getting waxed without shiners on the facial area....

Don't look now, but the Kings are winning 16-13, and Bibby has 7.

Okay, you can look.

End of the 1st quarter
Spurs 23, Kings 22.

Miller back to his 0-3, no points self.

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
Yup. Kings are playing. The Spurs are winning 54-46, with just under a minute to play in the first half.

Bibby has 13. Williams, Price and Garcia have 7 apiece.

Good question. I hadn't thought of that. But still, as far as offensive efficiency goes, he's ahead of Miller tonight, even though he's not playing.

this is good for fans....to see justin play well....and gives him something to work for..may i remind everyone that the spurs arent playing that hard (or else they would be wiping the floor with the kings) or well perhaps....im just happy that while the season hasnt been ideal....looking forward this is a much better way to end the season than what happened in 1998....

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
Do we need Artest to win? Looks like no.

86-85 Kings in the 4th. Bibby leads all scorers with 20. Garcia has 18 and Justin has 15. Martin has 10 and Shareef 12, meaning we have 5 in double figures.

Is Miller hurt? His stats have been stalled since Q1.

Ooohhh... when the Spurs make 3s and we miss, that makes it more difficult. Spurs up 90-86 now. The best thing? Duncan can't make a free throw to save his life.

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
Louis, do you ever really see Kevin being a team leader?  I would love for it to happen - and I know he's still young - but I have difficulty picturing it.

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
Maybe he's more like Eric Chavez, to give my A's analogy. A quiet guy who leads by example, and drives us nuts by knowing he is excellent, talented and doesn't always meet our lofty expectations.

You can be a scoring leader and not a floor general.

That's my non-answer.

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
not to quibble...but chavez's best years have come with miggie around...since then he's dropped off big time..as far as kevin....he's suffering from good player itis....if this was a meaningful game i would be bothered..if this continues into mid season next year..i will be bothered...leadership is overrated anyway...

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
Another fine effort by Garcia and Williams. Francisco looked like a much more complete player than KMart tonight - especially when it comes to ball-handling and, as always, defense.  Williams is relentless on the boards.

If KMart is going to take yet another step next season, a couple of things have to happen: (1) his ball-handling has to improve. (He should be studying Salmons, who has excellent handles.) With the attention that he's getting, he's going to have to create his own shot more and more.  He's gotten much better but must get better. (2) He's got to get stronger in order to deal with the extra attention and in order to get where he wants on the floor and finish.

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
If Salmon really had handles, it sure would be a lot easier to go fishing!

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
Kusian you make 2 excellent points. Kmart has to get stronger (as does justin) but he also has to get smarter too. His ball handling has improved as you note and can get better. His game has notably stepped up in the 2 years he has gotten playing time. I have a hard time doubting he can improve. Again kudo's for the excellent points.

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
Not to nitpick, but: Martin has the best turnover ratio on the entire team this year. If he figures out how to stop getting called for travelling, he might end up having one of the best turnover ratios for any starting two-guard in the league.

Salmons is a nice playmaker, but he also racks up quite a few turnovers. Per 100 possessions, he turns the ball over four more times than Kevin. Garcia has similar numbers as Salmons.

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
I guess that I should have more specific: I meant actually using the dribble to get where you want on the floor in order to get the shot you want and finish. Salmons cross-over and his very good spin move allow him to get to positions on the floor where he can try and score. (He gets to the basket better than anybody on the team.) If the guy could actually shoot beyond the FT line he'd be dangerous.

However, Salmons over-dribbles quite a bit, and he's not a great passer, so his TO numbers will be higher.  He also has the ball in his hand a lot more than Kevin, who tends either to shot or move the ball fairly quickly.

Anyway, I hope that was a less ambiguous explanation.

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
Salmons is also a pure PG offensively..he runs the show..his strength isnt shooting..its ballhandling/penetrating...if kevin becomes as adept @ Salmons @ it he will be a sure fire all star in this league..as it is he's the best king ive ever seen @ consistently @ getting to the FT line including rich mitchmond....

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
Now that everyone has seen what can happen when there is a shot blocker in there somewhere, doesn't it puzzle you not to see this team looking for one in the past few years? It seems every time we have a legitimate shot blocker he gets dealt. This is a Petrie thing, I tell ya'. Skinner was the closest we have had in recent memory, and we dumped him for... Oh yeah, "the bench potato" and another poor euro kid that got homesick (or tired of watching from the bench). What a mover and a shaker that GM is.

Gerald Wallace might be available next season. That loser only AVERAGED 2 blocks and 2 steals last season. He is fourth in the league (steals) behind that cancer Ron Artest this year.

DEFENSE and 3 point shooting, IMO is the best way to a championship in the modern NBA.

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
assuming the kings deal ron artest does this roster need another swingman that has all around skills yet isnt adept @ putting the ball in the hole?

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
Sorry I didn't get back to this, but your comment "another swingman that has all around skills yet isnt adept @ putting the ball in the hole?"

Are you joking? Have you looked at Wallace's numbers this year? He fills the stat line with everything but turnovers.

Re: Game 79 - at San Antonio
Lack of rebounding (SAR only had 1 rebound in 34 minutes?) and poor perimeter defense lossed the game.
