Reggie Theus: Serious Candidate

Paul Gutierrez in the Sacramento Bee presents an ode to Reggie Theus this morning. While I knew Theus had some sort of relationship with the Maloofs, I didn't know how close they all were.

Of course, the WAC is not the NBA, but it was in Spokane, Wash., site of the Aggies' first-round game against Texas, that Theus looked into the crowd and saw a couple of familiar faces. The Maloofs skipped the Kings' road trip to Miami and went "dancing" with Theus and the Aggies instead.

"We talked before the tournament and they said they wanted to come and that was the last I heard about it," Theus said this week from New Mexico. "Then, I look up in Spokane, and there they were. It was such an unbelievable thing. Our relationship and friendship is something that I respect greatly. It goes very deep."

John Whisenwho?

I haven't really given my thoughts on Theus The Coach before, so here goes:

  • I've never seen a New Mexico State game. In fact, I've never seen Reggie Theus on the sidelines.
  • Theus was an assistant coach at Louisville under Rick Pitino while Francisco Garcia was a star there. Given the similarities in Theus' and Garcia's playing styles, I'd venture to say they worked together quite a bit.
  • If you want to find the polar opposite of Eric Musselman... you look no further than Reggie Theus.
  • Here's a look at Theus' teams at New Mexico State. 2005 was the year previous to Reggie's arrival; he coached there in 2006 and 2007. 'W-L' is the team's record against Division 1 opponents. 'Pace' is how many possessions per game the team uses. You know offensive and defensive efficiency -- points scored/given up per 100 possessions. 'Marg' is the difference.
Year     W-L    Pace    OEff     DEff    Marg
2005    4-24    69.4    94.9    107.0   -12.1
2006   15-14    68.3   104.5     98.8    +5.7
2007    24-8    70.4   107.3     98.4    +8.9

Again, I haven't watched NM St. But that incredible first-year difference -- without the benefit of a full recruiting class -- indicates to me that Mr. Theus has some coaching chops. The huge jumps in offensive efficiency weren't due to some gimmick -- the team played at a similar pace. And that defensive efficiency jump his first year tells me he can motivate. Whether Theus has just college coaching chops or real, translatable coaching chops... none of us knows.

But add in his respect for the Maloofs, his relationship with Garcia, and his obvious desire to coach the Sacramento Kings... and I'd endorse the hire. Hiring coaches is a crap shoot. You could a ton worse than Reggie Theus. (Read: Eric Musselman.)

"You could a ton worse than Reggie Theus."

You could also do a ton better. Two years coaching in the WAC does not an NBA head coach make.

Re: Reggie Theus: Serious Candidate
So his experience isn't good enough? He has roughly equivalent experience to Mario Elie, who is running away with the current poll.

Elie: 1 year as an assistant under Popovich, 2 years under Mike Montgomery in Golden State.

Theus: 2 years under Rick Pitino at Louisville, 2 season as a head coach at NM State.

I would consider Elie's two seasons at terrible Golden State equivalent to Reggie's two under Pitino at a good Louisville program. So, do you value Elie's one year next to Pop and Carlesimo over Theus' two seasons of running a team on his own?

Other considerations:

Elie has a relationship with Artest. Theus has a relationship with Garcia. Which player do you think sticks around, all other things being equal?

Elie might have a history with Petrie from his Portland days. He interviewed last year and didn't get the job.

Theus has a history with the Maloofs, and would've gotten an interview if the process didn't happen so fast and he wasn't already on vacation in Africa.

I don't know... I'm happy with either. I think at this point, I'm happier with Theus. Elie doesn't seem to have anything Theus doesn't, and I love Mario as a candidate.

Re: Reggie Theus: Serious Candidate
I'm not excited about Mario Elie either, for all the reasons you outline.

I'd much rather have a former NBA player who has either had significant assistant experience with winning programs and is well-regarded (Iavaroni) or actual previous head coaching experience (Cartwright, Terry Porter).

To me, Theus and Elie are way too green.

Let's not forget his coaching experience with Deering High School in '95 on NBC's Saturday morning sitcom "Hang Time."

Man, those guys never lost.

I can't believe I haven't discussed this yet. Did any Deering players even miss a shot in Coach Fuller's tenure?

Not in a game. Coach Fuller moves to the top of my list.

Re: Reggie Theus: Serious Candidate
What's the difference between Musselman and Theus?

Musselman had a relationship with Shareef, blew the Maloofs socks off, and Musselman spelled disaster in his tenure with the Kings.

I would NOT endorse a Theus hiring just because he played for the Kings, have respect for the Maloofs and KNOWS Garcia. And even though he did improved a struggling ballclub. Musselman did it too in Golden State when they went from 21 to 38 wins in Muss' rookie tenure.

Besides, Theus is pure speculation and until Petrie returns from Europe and the coaching mill starts to really churn, I won't believe ANYONE is a serious candidate.

I wish for the Greg Oden Era.

Re: Reggie Theus: Serious Candidate
Until a new coach is selected, many names of coaching candidates will surface. The list changes daily and the "hot" candidate at the top of the list can change as abruptly as the wind direction--Scott Brooks, Mario Elie, Stan Van Gundy, Reggie Theus, etc.

Other present and probably future vacancies around the league will attract the more attractive candidates. College coaches rarley, if ever, succeed in the NBA. I think the best candidates are those with several years of coaching experience in the NBA, either as a head coach or as an assistant in a respected program.

Just install a revolving door to the ARCO coach's office and expect a new face every year or so until the roster can be rebuilt with youth, height, skill and athleticism.

Re: Reggie Theus: Serious Candidate
I agree that coaching and finding a new coach is a serious crapshoot. To bring about perspective: jerry krause (the guy who ran the bulls for awhile) wanted to bring in don buse instead of phil jackson to sit on the bench with doug collins. Sometimes youre smart and sometimes you get lucky. This is via Jerry Reynolds sniffy breezy memoir (in case anybody was wondering which i hope not).

Speaking of reggie theus though he does have chops. It would be a serious risk to bring him in. But anything is better than musselman @ this point.

In case you haven't already seen this:  http://awfulannouncing.blogspot.com/2007/02/reggie-theus-is-adonis.html

Theus has looked good as a coach, but his work on TNT was pretty weak IMO.

Re: Reggie Theus: Serious Candidate
Isn't Adelman the obvious choice up in Seattle?  I've been waiting on this move since Mcmillen headed south.  We'll give you Bibby for the funny looking white guy with the construction goggles (Swift) and an 18 pack of Raineer.

Re: Reggie Theus: Serious Candidate
There isn't a long history of success when college coaches make the move to the pros, so I'm skeptical based on that alone.

I get it beuaty and the beast coaching staff. I think this could only happen if Theus had to wear those shorts in the front page photo to every game.
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.
