It's Time to Hang

We gave it a shot with the eatsleepdrinkdrinkdriveeatsleep basketball dude. Failed miserably. At least this is a change.

Something you guys talked about in Louis' great breaking news thread -- and something that the mainstram media folks continue to avoid -- is how this hire reflects on the balance of power in the organization. Like many of you, I'm incredibly fearful the Maloofs pushed this hire right up Geoff Petrie's tailpipe here at the end of the process, not telling me to hire Reggie Theus, but telling him to hire Reggie Theus. The connections and history between Coach Fuller and The Family are too strong to ignore.

But one thing -- only one thing -- gives me some confidence in the whole thing: Geoff Petrie is still standing. I think Petrie is at the point in his career where he won't tolerate more cheekiness from his bosses. This isn't exactly a dream job for Geoff -- he has to move immovable pieces knowing full well no one wants to be his next heist victim. If he thinks he's going to get a ton of interference from The Family, I don't think he sticks around. Why would he? Why would he work his tail off to watch two dudes playing high stakes rotisserie piss it all away? I think Petrie's got more pride than that. And because of that, I feel alright about what got us here. If Petrie were getting ramrodded, he'd be gone. He's not.

As for Theus, at least it will be entertaining. A very sentient thought was made in the below thread, regarding Reggie's credibility in the locker room and how Francisco Garcia is related to that. (Garcia played at Louisville when Theus was an assistant coach there.) Garcia is beloved in that locker room -- I've heard he's Kevin Martin's best friend, he's Mike Bibby's workout buddy, he's close with Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Corliss Williamson, and he's the only guy near Ron Artest. How much of all that is true? Who know. But smoke, fire, etc. If Garcia spreads the good word about Theus before the vultures get to him, the coach is in an infinitely better starting position than Eric Musselman was. Locker room credibility goes a long way, as we saw with last season's disaster.

I refuse to say this is the dawn of a new era, as I'm sure The Family and Coach Fuller and Geoff will say on TV today. The dawn of the new era started last summer, when the franchise cut Rick Adelman loose and blew goodbye kisses to the Era of Glory and Awesomeness. The story of this team, this post-glory era has not been told. Musselman's team was the first part, Theus' team could be another blip or it could stretch for years. But don't get it twisted -- we're still in a deep mess. Hiring Reggie does nothing to change that, unless he can rebound and score in the post.

[[A thousand thank yous to Louis for pulling the late shift with all the breaking news and opinion. (I pick great nights to spend away from the computer and TV and cell phone.) As I said above, great insights from the community, too -- though we disagree on the hire, we get it. The discussion has been great, and I hope it continues.]]

Re: It's Time to Hang
The fear I have is Petrie saying to himself, you know I'm sick of these clowns not listening (assuming Theus was pushed on him) to my counsel.  I will bid my time and look for another gig and leave when the timing suits him.  How many more years does he have on his current deal?

Re: It's Time to Hang
I am torn.  I want a new begining, but like alot of STR has already stated - this feels like the Maloofs not GP.  I am excited that Reggie said he would hire a veteran lead assistant (something Muss didnt do which I said all along led to his demise) Pete would be a good hire, but as far as a lead assistant I dont know if he could give the energy needed in this position, but would fit fine in a teaching role.  We need someone that doesnt necessarily work directly with the players but directly for Reggie.  A basketball mind, someone who wouldnt have to deal with the politics, disipline, or playing time.  Anyone have any ideas? I have one but I will wait to see what the concensus is from the faithful first.

Re: It's Time to Hang
I'm disappointed in the hire, but I have to admit my opinion is clouded by Reggie's work here as an NBA player. Not that he was a bad player, mind you, but he was the primary face of a really bad basketball team from 1986 to 1988. He never struck me as a winner, and that's the thing that scares me about the hire.

And how is this hire any less risky than Larry Brown would have been?

Re: It's Time to Hang
Naw...TZ not Bob Hill.  My first choice is not available...unless Jerry Sloan retires and Utah goes outside looking for his replacement...and that would be Phil Johnson.  But doesnt look like Sloan will retire this century so......still waiting to hear some other suggestions before giving my suggestion. (no not JR)

Re: It's Time to Hang
I got an idea.. what about Paul Silas... He's been out of the league for a few years and im sure would love to get back to coaching as an assistant. Especially in a role where his superior would without a doubt seek his advice when needed!

Re: It's Time to Hang
Wow.  If he had and interest that would be awesome.  Nice pull, Hoops!

Re: It's Time to Hang
What im most concerned is that the Maloof's were looking to keep Artest on the roster to prove they were right. The kings have to move him for every reason we can think of plus some. I fear grabbing Paul Silas might only help keep the Kings. I really hope I'm wrong.

Re: It's Time to Hang
You know, I'm beginning to think that this may have been more of Petrie's call than we think.  He apparently did have conversations with Larry Brown (which the Maloof's OK'd), but ultimately decided that LB was not the right fit, which I define as Petrie being worried that he and LB would not peacefully co-exist.
Maybe Terry Porter did something at some point when he was here that turned Petrie and/or the Maloof's off.
So it came down to a group of guys with little or no real NBA head coaching experience.  Of those guys, Theus really had the best head coaching pedigree, albeit at the college level.
Maybe Theus has the cleanest canvas.  That is, he was the candidate most willing to follow Petrie's vision.
Or maybe, as TZ so eloquently put it, this hire was shoved right up Petrie's tailpipe (haunting visual).
What I do know is that I'm OK with this hire over any of the other candidates (if that indeed included conversations with LB).  The hire probably won't have the near term impact of the upcoming draft or any impending trades.  I will be very interested to see what this squad will look like come November.

Re: It's Time to Hang
i am okay with the hire, because shaw and brooks were not great candidates either.  i am fearful, just like everyone else, that the maloofs pushed this down petrie's throat, just like with the musselman interview.  all the evidence points that direction, the maloofs love a hometown guy and they have direct ties with theus.

at least today, though, i would like to hear the direction that the franchise is going in and what theus plans on doing.  i know that he won't/can't give full insider detals, but we deserve a little bit of information after this long and painful search.

when will the Kenny Thomas Reign of Terror end?!!??

Re: It's Time to Hang
i also like what tz said about cisco.  i love wathcing cisco because he has that natural leadership/glue that is rare to come by (think vlade).  he is k-mart's best friend, that is pretty easy to tell, bibby loves this guy, as do the veterans, and artest.

if cisco can give his blessings to theus, then i think the other guys will be willing to listen (at least at the beginning, before they have a chance to form their own opinons).  which is saying a hell of a lot more than musselman's start here.

Re: It's Time to Hang
Love the post TZ, whats not to love when you include cisco. Seriously this could be a long couple of years. Lets just talk about Cisco and Kevin the rest of the summer. I'll feel much better.

A few reasons reasons i continued to watch Kings games last year was... I paid for league pass,
I wanted to see Kevin Martin bust out a 30 point game.
I wanted to see Cisco just get playing time and dominate.
I wanted to see the poodle either drop 30 and 15 so that he could be traded, or drop off the face of the earth.

Re: It's Time to Hang
Hey, one thing to be excited about if you ever saw any episodes of "Hang Time."  Those kids sucked, but Reggie still made winners out of them.  Can he repeat the magic here?

Also, he let a girl play on the team. "Bibby, to Yolanda Griffith for the scoop and the score!"

Re: It's Time to Hang
I'm going to steal this one from Phantom on the rise guys show - when he was told that the best player on Theus' "Hang Time" team was a girl, he replied "But we traded Peja."
