Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings

I think Chad Ford is trying to crush our hearts or something. His latest mock draft has Brandan Wright slipping to #10:

The word is that Wright is slipping on draft boards. Everyone loves his talent, but in workouts he's proven to be further away from contributing than many of the other picks in the draft. Combine that with concerns about his motor, and he could slip.

But it's hard to see him slipping past the Kings. He fits a need and just has too much talent to pass on here.

Um, yes?

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
The multiple picks scenario concerns me, especially since the Kings haven't had recent opportunities to draft this high.  It is interesting all the speculation on who could drop to the Kings.  Two things seem fairly certain - that one of Yi/B. Wright/Conley/Noah will fall to us, and that Petrie will take whichever 7-foot Slovenian swingman he's planning on taking all along.
Freakin' Kings.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
Well, I have it like this. Three tiers. 1. These are the LOCKS I see that will be gone before us:

Oden
Durant
Horford
Brewer

2. The ones that SHOULD be gone before us:

Jianlian
Noah
Conley Jr.
B. Wright

3. This tier are the ones that will PROBABLY make it down to our pick. Obviously ONE will be gone since the other 2 tiers have 8 players.

Hawes
J. Wright
Green
Horford
Splitter
J. Smith
Crittenton
Law IV
Nick Young
T. Young

I REALLY doubt that someone from tier 2 will drop down to us. The only way that happens is if TWO players from tier 3 are chosen before us. Of those players, I only see Hawes, Wright and Green possibly chosen before us. SO it's POSSIBLE that up to TWO players from tier 2 can drop to the #10 slot, one at the most.

Good list. I'd drop Noah down to Tier 3 though, maybe Brewer down to Tier 2. Past the big two and Horford, no one's a lock to Top 5 (or more specifically top 9, although I don't see Brewer falling below 8 or Conley falling below 6). Nobody's showing their cards yet.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
OK, I've been reading this draft talk for a week now, and I find myself befuddled by the odious sentiment associated to Spencer Hawes.

It's hard to believe that a player who is considered a Top 10 pick in 95% of all the mock drafts can be as bad as he's being made out to be here.

I've watched Hawes play.  Is he great? No. Is he awful? Of course not.  He's a very competent offensive player who is not terribly athletic. He is not a great defender or rebounder. In short, he's pretty good. He's not great. But, then again, almost nobody is. Making him sound like the worst Top 10 prospect in this history of basketball is simply unreasonable.

I can't wait for the regular season because between the coaching selection and the draft, the hyperbole and histrionics is getting unbearable.

Kusian,
I think some of the anti-Hawes sentiment comes with the camparisons to Brad Miller.  A couple of years ago that would have been a compliment and everyone would be excited to have Hawes.  After last year, not so much.  As I said, if he's good enough for Petrie...

You mean like jumping off one of the highest buildings in the world if the team drafts Spencer Hawes? You have a very low threshold for hyperbole and histrionics, I think. ;)

Generally, beyond the first few picks of any draft, the whole thing is a crapshoot. These guys are all different athletes, who played for different coaches against different levels of competition. Considering that, I feel more comfortable just trusting in Petrie's excellent record in this regard than worrying about Hawes v. Wright v. Conley v. Jianlin, etc.

The continued blind confidence in Petrie after 2-3 solid of years of inept stumblebumming and petty power struggles is surprising to me.  Are we forgetting that this is the guy who traded away the best player in Sacramento history for Kenny Thomas' 35-year, $are you freaking kidding me?-million contract while the team was 14 games above .500?  He has a great talent for evaluating players, but his recent track record is spotty at best.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
  1. - I don't call the drafting of Martin or Garcia stumblebumming, especially given how late they were taken.  Too early to call Douby.
  2. - Thomas' contract is about 1/3 of Webber's, so I would have to call Petrie's trading of that contract for three smaller contracts a success in spite of the ineptness of K9 (woof!).

by section214 on Jun 25, 2007 5:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
  1. First off the trading of Webber put the Kings under the lux tax for 2005.

  2. Next it allowed the Kings to break up Skinner's contract into 2 other contract's allowing them to save more money

  3. Next Webber's contract if still on the books would cost 19 million at likely a very diminished production of what it was. Not acceptable at this point.

  4. Webber's production in 2004-2005 season was not any longer a production of a superstar. A superstar who is making up a 3rd of your salary cap who is no longer a superstar is not worth the money. Webber was no longer a superstar, and anybody who didn't think so is outright foolish and I include you DB, and those who want to believe otherwise are kidding themselves.

  5. The idea that Webber lifted this franchise is a false one. Webber didn't do it by himself. In fact in the first season the 10 wins in 11 games to put the team in the 1999 playoffs WAS DONE WITHOUT HIM. I'm not sure how Webber resurrected this franchise without everyone else that was here.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
There are two different C-Webbs. Pre-injury C-Webb was above all a lightning rod for this team. He took the hits whether they were fair or not, and a team has to have one of those guys.  Pre-injury Webber was also spoken of in the same sentence (at that time) as Duncan and Garnett.  His contract was large but fair.  Anyone who does not think that he was the best player on the team is not being objective.  A double-double guy who was also the best ball handling big man in the NBA.
Post-injury C-Webb was just plain sad.  Like watching Willie Mays play past his prime, it almost made you sick to watch him.  It amazed me though, that people thought him selfish, when he could have stayed at home and collected his paycheck.  Were the people that criticized Webber for playing the same people that later criticized Peja and B-Jax for not playing?
Webber may be the greatest player of the Sacramento era.  It's him or Richmond.  Without the knee injury it wouldn't have been close.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
Actually with webber they'd be well over THE LUXURY TAX and unable to make other moves. They were around 64 million this year. One of those reasons was that they were able to cut monia off the cap and basically resign other guys. With Webber they wouldn't have.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
Remember, when you buy a guy out it only gives you luxury tax relief but it still counts against your cap, so Webber's salary would still be on the books in terms of salary cap.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
He must have meant the salary amnesty. Actually I doubt the Kings wanted to amnesty anybody. That was really a waste of a clause because I think the Kings would waive a player now if they could. Or maybe not. I just think the amnesty thing was a fraud. Anyway the Kings would have declined to do so. Petrie won't waive players unless it's absolutely necessary to do so.

I think I have more faith in him when it comes to drafting over trading.

Seriously though, that trade was bad but it wasn't horrible...I don't think we were going anywhere that year with Webber (although we might have made it past Seattle - that's crazy to think that two years ago Seattle was in the 2nd round) and now we've got a third of that monster contract. We probably could have gotten better value and Thomas is pretty much a waste of money, but our cap situation sure is better now.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
I don't know if the Kings would have made it to the playoffs with Webber. They were going to sink fast after Miller went down. And I don't know that you could have predicted that leg injury not happening. So if you plug in Webber, instead of the 3 guys we got, how are you going to say an uneven Webber was better than a healthy skinner/thomas? Seattle was a clearly better team. They coasted to 52 wins with injury problems of their own down the stretch.

I think he got traded cuz of those 4 losses against the best teams that year(remember where they got screwed by the refs in 3?). One of them being seattle. It was clear this team wasn't the same group and I think Petrie had to make a deal he could. Unfortunately with Webb's very massive deal it was hard to get anything of quality back.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
His recent track record is not at all spotty when it comes to drafting talent. I dare you to find a GM with a better drafting history.

However, his ability to build around his draft talent is certainly suspect at this point. The jury's still out on his ability to build a team for anyone but Rick Adelman.

I'd still give him the benefit of the doubt, based on the fact that some of the obstacles Petrie encounters with this squad is the result of moves that were made a few years back to try to win a championship. And I much prefer that to a GM that wouldn't make a few risky moves to get there.

I think the Kings got stuck very quickly with a team that one year contended for a championship then the next wasn't one. The fact they aren't worse off is a miracle given the Webber/Artest trades.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
there isn't a single player on the kings roster that you can build a franchise around.  if you add brandan wright, you couldn't build around him either.  but with wright, k-mart, cisco, and douby, this would be a pretty damn exciting team to watch.  we would probably be the 8 spot in the west at best to start off with, but in 3 years, i could see this core making a serious attempt at the championship (the way the league is going, this would be a Suns type team, and this type of team would thrive in the new NBA).

i also forgot to add salmons to that mix, that would be a pretty good team.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
I would pick Brandan Wright over Noah but i hope Wright drops he does not even have to drop to 10th to make me happy just drop to bobcats or a team that is interested in Noah so Noah will be avilable at 10th.

Jason Smith would be interesting to pick and i would pick him if Noah or Brandan Wright were not available at 10th but the kings have not worked out with him? Why the hell not? that does not make much sense to me atleast give him a chance for god sakes damn.

And also has this team worked out with Brandan Wright yet? i have heard they worked out with NoahYiHawes but there is a small chance Wright drops to 10th (even know i think he will not) there still is a chance so i would work him out because outside of Oden, Durant, and Al Hortford i would pick Brandan Wright #4 for this team.

Please trade for extra picks this is a deep draft and this team only has 1 damn pick come on i want Chris Richard i want atleast 1 big man from the florida gators (Hortford, Noah, and Richard obviously) of course Noah and Richard are much more realistic than getting al Hortford but this team NEEDS to try to offer atlanta something anything outside of Kevin Martin if you are going to rebuild you need to have a big draft next year's draft isnt filled with as good big man as this year's draft from what i have heard so take advantage of it please, can't wait until the draft.

Give us someone who will fight for rebounds and provide an interior presence to open up space for Bibby and Martin.  Giving us another Brad Miller-type player who plays away from the basket makes my stomach clench in fear.

Failing that, see if we can move up to get Conley, Jr.  I don't think Petrie is down with that plan, but it's something to keep me warm at night, at least.

Re: Ford: Brandan Wright Could Slip to Kings
Mike Bibby, I recall he didn't get along with Peja. He had trouble playing with Artest. He singled out Kevin Martin for his poor defense last year, hasn't exactly showed a passion for passing him the ball. He publicly bashed the fans when they booed the teams abismal play; bashed the organization for even pondering a trade...is it just me or has Mike Bibby been part of the problem? I'm starting to believe Mike Bibby thinks the fans and his team are here to fuel his ego--the tragic flaw of any failed leader. I think Shakespeare may have written a play about that.  Didn't end well. So I say, Let the man shoot! but please: someone take away his septor.

Well, I think we have Bibby for the upcoming year unless Petrie can talk the Maloofs into trading him.  I don't expect him to be re-signed in the off season, so we may as well make the best of it.  This is the main reason why Conley would be a great pickup.

I agree I don't think there will be any trades involving us, but we desperately need to move Artest and/or Bibby.  Artest has the best value and could fit in well in many scenarios where an alpha dog has already been established(pookeys Miami deal come to mind).  I think Bibby to the Celtics would be great, but I reiterate I have a fealing that we will have one and only one new player at the end of this draft.
