Kings Love Julian Wright

As mentioned in the open thread, Chad Ford again comments on the Kings and a prospect named Wright:

On Monday, I thought Julian Wright was slipping, too. He had been struggling with an ankle injury and didn't appear to be gaining traction in the draft.

However, after several phone calls on Monday evening, I think he's still in the picture with Milwaukee at No. 6. Also, the Bulls are considering him at No. 9 and the Kings appear to really like him at No. 10.

Julian has been getting tons of credit around the nation, for his great attitude and huge potential. Which begs the question you'll see on the right... are you praying for an elite slipper, or a very good riser?

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
I like Wright. I listed him as the 5th best prospect of the draft. My problem with him is his shooting and lack of a real position. I think he would fit well in New Orleans or Philadelphia. Hell I think he would fit in well with Detroit or Washington too. I think the Kings must go big with this pick (as I keep saying) because it's a must they move forward with this roster at some point.

No thanks on a Rashard Lewis clone. Although he isn't the worse player you could compare him to either.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
If both Wright's are there at #10 I take B.Wright.  The biggest knock on him seems to be that it will take him longer to develop than the other top prospects.  Well the Kings have time, my friends.  I'm fairly confident that every penny of my playoff ticket money this year will wind up being applied to my 2008-09 regular season.  I can't envision a scenario where both B.Wright and Jianlian are still on the board at #10 - I'd be happy with whichever one of the two was left, though I think they will both be gone.  My guess is that it will come down to Green or J.Wright by the time the #10 pick comes up.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
The Kings love Yi and won't let him slip past 10. Never mind - if B. Wright gets to us, we take him. Oh wait, now Julian Wright's floor is 10. And Conley and Green won't get past us either.

Not that it matters much as likely only one or maybe two of these players drop to us, but the Kings are running a lot of bullsh*t right now (as is every team ahead of us, making for a confusing pre-draft and hopefully an exciting night on Thursday). I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

Yea I've been getting that feeling too. I was bored earlier tonight and if I can I'll post some of the names that was posted that the Kings might take @ 19. Through no fault of Louis, I don't think, none of them were selected obviously.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Douby was a horrible pick, one of the few that Petrie has made as the boss of the Kings. He is an undersized two guard that some how is going to be converted to a point. We had a need for size before and after the draft, Josh Boone was available and drafted #23. After a slow start due to an injured shoulder he played well down the stretch. At #23, Marcus Williams, a true point guard and considered a top 5 pick was taken. Again another glaring weakness coming into the draft was a back-up point. Both of these guys would have been better picks. This isn't hindsight, they were both widely considered better prospects than Douby. Petrie, in his infinite wisdom allowed his ego as a talent guru cloud his judgment and take the wrong player. Williams would be the starting point this year, making Bibby completely expendable, Boone and Justin Williams would have made a nice young base for a rebounding, defensive front line. Not only did Petrie not draft for need, he didn't draft the best available player either.

I do still love Petrie but last years draft, matched with the Salmons debacle and the long term deals he has given to players who would not have got the same money or years elsewhere (Webber, Miller, Bibby, Christie, Salmons and the offer to Wells) has left me a little frustrated. I would also like to point out that Justin Williams could have easily made the team lat year and at worse case been allocated to the NBDL for very little money securing his place with the team. This gamble worked out but it could have gone another way.

We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Dude it's one season. How does anybody know how any of these guys will develop? It's not like Petrie left Brandon Roy on the table or something. Williams got time and Douby didn't. Maybe there are other things that will show up in the future. Throwing Douby under the bus for an unproductive seasons is dumb. You could have done the same to Kevin Martin. I think he's turned out OK. If you take risky guys at picks sometimes they will take longer to develop.

That's a great question on Justin Williams. Why wasn't he on the active roster all year?

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Yeah, remember how Kevin Martin looked like he should have been in the NDBL his first season?

I'd give Douby some time...maybe if we drill him into becoming a point guard he can get some time there, although he's more likely just a backup to Martin.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Read my post again, Douby was a horrible pick because we are trying to convert a small 2 to a point instead of taking one of the best natural points in the draft or a quality 4. I didn't condemn Douby for his first season, I condemn him because he doesn't have a natural position in the NBA and the weren't in a position of need. Martin was drafted to eventually replace Christie, Francisco was draft to back up Artest until Salmons was signed. Where does Douby fit in? We passed on two guys who could have been groomed as future starters and were not crap shoots at 19. Both of these are legitimate prospects, Douby could have been had 8-10 picks later.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Well how can we know? Musselman wasn't consistent in anything. You're saying that Douby doesn't have a position. I'm saying if Douby can play than it doesn't matter. I worry alot less about a position than if a guy can play. I worry more about having different types of players at each position than about whether it's a 'point guard' 'shooting guard' that kinda thing. If you choose to look at it as a failure that's your choice. I'm saying Douby needs more time, and a clear chance to play in a rotation, before you throw him under the bus. To me throwing him under that said bus for not having a position, particularily when Marcus Williams plays and Douby doesn't, doesn't seem the wisest course of action. Unless Williams becomes a clear cut starter it's all about opinion at this point. I can live with Douby instead of Williams I can. It's not like Marcus Williams makes me go WHOOOOAAAAAA we shoulda had him. I don't look at drafts that way. No matter how easy it is.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Is there such a thing as a horrible #19 pick?  At #19 you throw the dart.  It's not like Douby wasn't on other draft boards, and there were 18 other teams that saw something about Williams that they didn't like.  Plus, one year and limited playing time?  Me thinks it's a little too early to pass judgement.  Was Douby's 1st season considerably worse than K-Mart, Gerald Wallace, Cisco?
And while Salmons wasn't lights out, he came a lot closer to making good on his $5 million contract than a lot of the other guys did.  And he did that while getting inconsistent rotation time at three different positions.  Salmons was not the cure for last year but he was not the cause, either.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Last year this time we also thought Mike Bibby was going to have an All-Star season. He lost weight, was supposed to be faster, working hard in the off-season, etc... Kevin Martin had not broken out yet either and Brad Miller still seemed like the passing big man we could run our offense through.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Douby deserves some PT before we condemn him as a bad decision, and we just may be needing help at the pg position this year if big contract Bibby is traded.

And I still don't understand how Salmons is considered a debacle.  He's a young swing man with the abiblity to get to the hole as well as play resonable d.  What did he do that was so bad?

Plus he can handle the ball as can Garcia. Is that such a bad thing to see 2 bigger guys handle the ball more? Especially when they dont shoot 25 times a game?

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
And not only that the team could run run run. Wouldn't it be fun to see more Ronnie Price dunkage?

Price Douby PG'ish
Martin/Ricky Davis SG
Salmons/Garcia SF/Point Forwards
Thomas/Smith/Abdur-Rahim
Miller/Williams/Noah

Plus filler that I'm totally blanking on which would be awesome for this group. So I would also love this.

Price/Douby/Duhon
Martin/Davis
Salmons/Garcia
Thomas/Smith
Miller/Williams/Noah

Throw in Chris Richard (a nod to rimrock) if he's available if he wasn't drafted and there you go. That's the 13 you need for the roster next year. Plus Davis & Duhon give you 10 mil in cap room next offseason. Nothing the Kings need more than to give this team more flexibility.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Add Claxton & Lue as they would be coming back from Atlanta with the 11th pick. So that's 15 on the roster. Not terrible though. Lue will add even more cap room.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Am I the only one who thinks there wont be any draft day trades? GM's cannot lose their jobs by drafting badly or making bad picks; god forbid they make a bad trade on draft day because that could end the NBA as we know it and obviously cost them their jobs.

Although you wonder with people like the Celtics Assistant GM getting real GM jobs, for teams wanting to win(that team tanked the entire half of season right?). What is wrong with the business?

P.S. Kudos from Italy.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
I think Atlanta would do it. I don't see any reason why Minnesota wouldn't either (except out of fear). Atlanta would love to get rid of Claxton and moving Lue would be just a cap throw in. Claxton has a 3 year deal left but he's around 16 million left on it. Plus you would add another player for 2 years down the road to move in a cap room trade (thomas miller).

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Yeah I don't think we can just add in trades that we made up and assume they're going to happen. Honestly I'd take the Bibby trade but I don't think Atlanta would be interested at all.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Did the Kings ever say Douby would end up as a point guard, I think you draft the best players then put them in positions that allow them to succeed, Bibby was better when Christie was here as he was more of a playmaker and initiated the offense, and Bibby played off Webber and Bibby and would hit open Jumpers something Christie wasn't so good at.  If Garcia and Salmons could play more of a ball handling game, Douby could play off them as a 6th man, Vinny Johnson instant offense off the bench

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
great point murf.  christie made the plays from the point and bibby was still great with hitting his jumpers and game winners.  while i don't think douby will be quite that, he can come in and hit threes and jumpers and get to the hoop occasionally with cisco or salmons handling.

to back up jjham's point, i was pretty upset when i heard douby's name instead of williams.  i was looking for a backup point last year and when i kept hearing name after name that wasn't marcus williams, i was getting very excited.  but then we took douby and i was a little frustrated with petrie.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Unless it's obvious who you take, like an Oden or Durant, I have found fans take too much stock in mock drafts and whom they want. Then 3 years down the road they go DOH! Douby is an interesting player as he's a combo guard who could go a couple of different ways at this point. For our sake let's hope he goes well.

Agreed, Murf.  I have to think that Petrie saw Douby as more of a B-Jax type than a guy who could be morphed into a true point guard.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
My point is still that Williams was and is considered a better prospect AND that he has a natural position which was a need coming into the draft last year and is still a need now. The only excuse that Petrie could have for not drafting Williams is that he was considered a top 5 pick so Petrie never scouted his, but none of you have brought that point up.

Side note, Williams put up his numbers as a back-up to Jason Kidd who plays 37.6 minute per game, Douby couldn't get minutes because John Salmons (a small forward) and Ronnie Price (an undrafted free agent) were taking his time.

We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Except that Douby was not drafted to play back up point last year, so his minutes for the large part of the year were taken up primarily by Kevin Martin, followed by Salmons and Cisco.  Petrie has said it over and over again - he does not and will not draft for need - he takes who he deems as the best player available.  If/when Williams does become a stud Petrie can be an idiot like the other 20 GM's that found reason to pass on him.  Douby played in 42 games last year, averaging 8.6 minutes per game.  Williams averaged 16.6 minutes in 79 games.  Are we really trying to call a winner on this already?

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
Your proving my point, Douby wasn't ready to contribute on a 33 win team, he had one memorable game which elevated his meager scoring average by almost a point a game. Even if he had a very good season he doesn't have a natural position so at best you are drafting a six man...agreed? Williams can be a starting point guard in the NBA, he is the heir apparent to Jason Kidd. Petrie drafted a guy who at best is a six man when he could have drafted the starting point guard of the future. I'm not looking to bash Douby as much as explain why I think Petrie made a very large mistake last year. Drafting the best available player is fine with me but Douby was not the best available player then or now.
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Kings Love Julian Wright
If a good NBA starter averages 38 minutes a game, then Douby and Williams combined to play the equivalent of about 44 games last year.  That's my point.  It's like arguing whether Oden or Durant has had the better pro career when neither one has even signed a contract yet.  The jury is still out. And if Douby becomes B-Jax and Williams becomes Anthony Johnson, then I'll take the 6th man, thank you.  If Williams becomes the next Jason Kidd then that's another story.  But it's a story that's still a couple of years away from being written.
