If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted

Geoff Petrie got Spencer Hawes.

Billy King got Thaddeus Young, Jason Smith, Derrick Byars, and Kyrylo Fesenko.

What the hell?!?

Ailene Voisin checks in:

A radio reporter rushed over and asked Oden how Hawes would do in Sacramento, and the former Ohio State star replied, "He's going to do what he does. I've got to get down there ... he's throws elbows, too."

PROS: Throws 'bows.

CONS: Everything else.

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
Let me ask you this Otis. The sixers are young. They have one young talented stud in AI2. They have a very good solid PG in Andre Miller. If Dalembert ever shakes out of his shell he could be very much the player they've overpaid to this point. Fasenko was a risk at the 30th overall pick? Please. Smith at the 21st pick (i know smith was traded but that was the pick so im going with that)? It's not like any of these guys were mega stars but still. If you roll the dice and 1 becomes an all star alongside Iggy and you still have good young talent elsewhere how does this go bad? Honestly this is the kind of draft Petrie needed that Billy King did. I give the man kudo's. Do you think Philly fans are excited about Kryrylo Fasenko? Or Jason Smith? I'm not nutting all over myself because the sixers got Smith or anything. I'm just frustrated because I believe the Kings didn't deal Artest or Bibby soon enough to get in this draft. JASON FUCKING RICHARDSON GOT TRADED. Yet Petrie is waiting for the right deal for Ron Artest? This is bullshit.

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
Hey, I understand the frustration, I really do. I just think everyone is WAY overreacting here.

I guess this is what happens when a team misses the playoffs for the first time in nine years. The kneejerk reaction is that the ship is sinking. That's fine, I get it - I do hope that everyone gets it out of their system the next few days.

The outcry here is a complete overreaction. There is still plenty of offseason left for Petrie to work on the roster, and there is a new coach who may well give our young guys a chance to develop. No matter who we picked tonight, we weren't going to be in the hunt in the West for a few years. That means that what Petrie did tonight was a small piece of the puzzle.

Let's try to keep that in mind before we wish the whole franchise out of town.

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
Otis I've been a fan of this team for 15 years. I suffered through the Wizard's crossover that everyone in the league figured out by his 3rd season. I suffered through watching Brian Grant leave and having to watch Billy Owens replace him @ PF. I had to watch Olden Polynice do that retarded OPEY DOPE move a 100 times. Again this isn't about Hawes at all. My thing is why would Chicago not need him? If Hawes/Noah have the same potential why not roll the dice on Hawes? Isn't it clear the Bulls need low post play and a young player wouldn't necessarily be the guy they would roll the dice on? I think it's interesting the Bulls left a guy with potential on the table for a guy who does similar things to 2 frontline players they have already. PLUS THERE IS THIS.

I don't care about the losing. I'm not overreacting to this team missing the playoffs. That happens. I don't even care that the team missed on Musselman. If it provided an object lesson to the Maloof's on their level of involvement great. Some things really do have silver linings that last forever. That's not my problem. Unless they drastically change this roster and gives Hawes a different group of players this makes little sense. Unless you see Spencer Hawes not backing up Brad Miller, which is hard to imagine but hey after Jason MOTHERFUCKING Richardson got traded anything is possible, next season where is the silver lining? Again, unless Hawes becomes a multiple time all star he will be viewed, unfairly certainly and I'm not against Hawes and wish him the best every day from here on out, as what's wrong with the franchise at the moment. I would like to see this franchise with different views on basketball players. Athleticism is not a bad thing is it? Especially in a big? Heaven forbid you let Hawes drop to somebody else. I just think there was some flavor of what if with Hawes. And that's bullshit to let fear run your organization.

If Mullin is such a great GM, why did they just this year make the playoffs?

On another note, somebody from that team HAD to be moved due to the severe logjam at swingman, thanks to trades that Mullin pulled off.

Mullin is an awful GM. It took 2 very lucky, and very willing trade partners, to pull what he did off. At this point Mullin isn't anything to write him about. He's just gotten lucky.

For the record Billy King may have just changed his legacy for the better. Not only did he not take big college players or anything like that he rolled the dice with potential at 3 positions that will make the team better: SF PF and C. Gee doesn't that sound like something the Kings should have tried? Billy King must be lucky today. Or I have overestimated this years draft class.

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
See here's the problem I have with all this. It's not Hawes fault either. It's the franchise's ability to understand where the public is at. Nobody is going to like this pick unless Hawes becomes an all star. What are the chances of Hawes becoming anything more than a solid player in this league? There is nothing wrong with that. But this team needs stars and a franchise level player. Hawes is not that. Not only that the fans will start to sour on Brad Miller badly and Hawes will remind them of that, fair or not. Hawes is not being set up to succeed, he's being set up to fail. And that's unfair to any young player.

This was a very disappointing evening for Kings fans. I ended up watching the entire draft to see if we would at least grab a mid-second. I'm pissed about no trades and pissed that Portland bought their way through the draft. What good is having billionaire owners if they won't spend a fucking dime. The second the Kings stopped winning these guys seemed to have lose interest. Maybe we are entering the Mayo lottery for next year or maybe the Maloofs are punishing the fans for not getting their stadium built. I'm with Pookey, things are looking a little dark and not quite right.

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
OK, I've had some McD's, opened a High Life, settled down, realized that I don't feel like becoming a Warriors, Blazers, or Bobcats fan, and gained some perspective.  Here it is:

  1. Hawes is 7 feet tall, seems to have good basketball sense, and supposedly has some post moves.  So it's not the worst thing ever.  It just doesn't seem to address any immediate needs.

  2. Portland has literally 137 players on its roster, and they are dying to do more dealing.  They've already acquired Steve Francs.  Steve...Francis.  The guy who makes $78 million per season and is terrible.  We can unload Miller, Thomas, Reef, Ron-Ron, and Bibby by the end of the night.  Get your nose in there, Petrie!

  3. As long as Quincy Douby is the next Chauncey Billups, Francisco Garcia is the next Bruce Bowen, Kevin Martin is the next Reggie Miller, and Spencer Hawes is the next Zydrunas Ilgauskas, we should be doing alright.  Either way, my girlfriend's favorite part of the game will be still Mini-Air Slamson, so what the hell.  My family is a Kings family.  They'll always be my boys, even when I wish they weren't.

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted

What is wrong with all you people? I don't understand it. On the one hand the collective sentiment is that Petrie is losing control of the Kings, abdicating much to the Maloofs to the detriment of the franchise, we subsequently have a draft pick that was clearly, solely Petrie's and all anyone can do is complain. I enjoy visiting this page because it's a welcome, educated respite from the countless KHTK callers complaining about basketball incidentals they have no knowledge of. But tonight a collective group of fans have let me down with their interminable, incessant complaining. It's like the entire Royalty message board was hijacked by Sign Man...though still considerably more articulate. I'm not a Hawes fan. His infatuation with Bush alone is enough to turn me off, and that's not even a legitimate basketball reason. But it's Petrie's responsibility to draft the player he felt was the best available. He did as such. Apologies if I place a little more faith in the guy who resurrected this team from an irrelevant cellar dweller to a perennial playoff contender than I do DB and his lame George Mikan references.

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
I agree, but I kind of get how this happened. There are a lot of very smart basketball people posting here, and they've analyzed this draft class inside and out...and the consensus leading up to tonight was "please don't draft Spencer Hawes". So some of the reaction is a result of that buildup.

Let's see how everyone feels after a couple of days to digest this - I was pretty disappointed in the Theus hire, but after hearing Petrie interviewed and some positive opinions here, I felt a bit better about things.

My sense is it will take a lot more time to turn around the anger of drafting Hawes.  It seems like the vote is about 2% pro, 98% con here...

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
I think that most of believed that the Kings would be major players in this, one of the best drafts in history. We had the pieces to make major changes even if it meant starting from scratch in total rebuild mode. Instead we are locked into the same shitball team we watched last year while other teams made countless moves. Blow it up, make it better do whatever just don't sit on your fucking hands and take one guy who at best is a clone of an aging player we already have. If I'm Mike Bibby, I get the hell out of here now and go play for the mid-level exception elsewhere. Artest may beat his wife just so he doesn't have to play this season and just to spite us super Reggie should give K-9 48 minutes a game for all 82.

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
Has anyone watched any of the ESPN post draft analysis? Granted it's ESPN, granted it's guys like Hubert Davis and, horror of horrors, Stephen A. Smith, but the collective sentiment has been that the draft's biggest loser was the Bulls, who blew the opportunity to fill their one need, low post scoring, by taking Noah instead of Hawes. We watched Miller absolutely deteriorate this year, really these past couple of years, and Hawes can't rebound and by all appearances doesn't seem particularly good defensively. But he's the best offensive center in the draft. And, outside of Thornton, who is almost 40, he was the best offensive player left in the draft. He's not fast. But he can score. And while this is a roster with a myriad of needs and points isn't at the top I'm not against the drafting of an offensively skilled center. And I completely understand why people are against the pick, christ I'm against it. But a lot of Petrie's picks have panned out, and a lot of people like Hawes. So I'm curious.

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
Okay, we start the night with picks 12,21,30,38.

We end up with players drafted at: 12,20,42,55.

First, he completely overreaches to draft Thaddeus Young at 12. He probably could have traded down and still gotten him later in the draft.

Spent cash and a 2009 2nd rounder to move up one pick, which is basically just getting robbed by Miami because they weren't going to draft Jason Smith anyway, they just conned BK into giving them cash and future 2nd rounder for nothing.

Then he trades a 1st round pick DOWN for a pick 12 picks later + cash. (Portland is so flush with cash, he probably should have at least been able to get #37)

Then he trades his high 2nd pick DOWN again for a pick 17 picks later + cash. This is just makes no sense at all. He doesn't even acquire a future 2nd rounder to cover the cost of his first trade.

So basically, this either means that Billy King is quite possibly the dumbest GM in the entire league, or the Sixers are so desperate for a couple of million dollars.

That's just sad. BK is a complete idiot. Any guy off the street could manage this team better than he does.

Rating Hawes' rebounding ability against other centers drafted:

Last season:

Oden - 14 double-doubles (pts/boards)
J. Smith - 18
Fazekas - 21 (not one game under 10 points)
Horford - 16
A. Gray - 15
Herbert Hill - 14
Visser - 8
Hawes - 3 double doubles (THREE!?!?! WTF???)

I sure hope we trade for rebounding or that Justin Williams becomes a major player next year. Both seem unlikely.

I agree on Wright. He was actually the guy I wanted more than even the kids drafted before the Kings pick. He can pass, he can dunk and most importantly he can rebound. I think he'll be a better pro than Green. The Hornets never should have signed Peja. I understand the logic but they have a nice young nucleus now with West, Armstrong, Paul and Wright, and you're giving half your franchise's money to an underachieving, oft-injured past his prime shooter. Though Wright could easily play the Christie roll and find him his spots in that offense.

Real quick note about Spencer Hawes supposed lack of rebounding. He played alongside one of the better rebounders in the nation per minute in 6-7, 260 lbs Jon Brockman. The dude averaged 13.3 boards per 40 and 9.6 per game. As most of this board knows, there are only so many boards to go around. Point is, he may not be as terrible on the boards as we may believe via the stats. I'm sure he's no Ben Wallace, but he could be better than we think..........and the kid hasn't even grown into his body yet........he's only 19 for chrissakes.

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
True enough.......I'm not saying that the kid's Dennis Rodman. I'm just saying that his rebound rate may be understated due to playing with a legit monster on the boards.

Note the year before Rodman played with Robinson on the Spurs

David Robinson 11.9 rebounds per 40

1st year with Rodman 10.6 rebounds per 40

2nd year with Rodman 11.4 rebounds per 40 (Note that Rodman only played 49 games this season)

Year after Rodman 13.2 rebounds per 40

Granted, Robinson is still a great rebounder with Rodman there, but is much better numbers-wise as the only excellent rebounder on the team.

Again, he could suck on the boards in the L. Just food for thought............I thought it was more productive than, "This guy blows" and "I hope the Kings move to Las Vegas" and "Maybe I'll have to find a girlfriend since I can't rely in Kings basketball to get me through the day......thanks alot Geoff!"

He's only 19..

Obviously we were looking for an immediate fix with an athletic big to rebound/block shots and pound his chest.

Yet in Petrie we trust... if you haven't noticed Petrie likes to build his teams around passing centers and considering we were 1 game away from a Title (playing the Nets was like playing a NDBL team back then).  I don't understand why we are in complete panic mode.  We all agreed we were in a 3 year rebuild (or most of us) there's still plenty of time to find that athletic big, and if you haven't noticed trades get more lopsided at the trade deadline as teams can smell the championships and will reach more on there trades.

Nonetheless, it couldve been better if we had immediately filled our glaring need, but we have time and at some point we will bring athleticism to this team.

Pros: Post up game, Young, 7 footer, Good passer and can recognize double teams(would pass to Kevin out of the double teams), High baseketball IQ
Cons: Not that athletic, Needs to improve on his rebounding, not the shot clocker that we wanted

I think he'll be better than Julian Wright especially here in Sac town. I don't think Julian Wright would thrive here. Look at it this way. Julian dropped to 15. I'm sure Hawes would have been picked ahead of Julian had we not snatched him up

my mistake, julian is #13
I still think PHI would have gotten Hawes if he was available

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
What does the Hawes pick mean?  It means that Artest was more or less untradeable, at least at a value Petrie is willing to accept--if Petrie could ditch Artest, we would have seen Thornton or J. Wright here.  Ergo, this pick makes a Bibby trade more likely, given that he and Artest do not mix well.

I, for one, do not consider Hawes an utter disaster.  It's a disappointing, boring, utterly predictable outcome, but at an absolute minimum, Hawes is a decent backup center.  Kings haven't had one of those since...uh...Felton Spencer?  They're more important than you think.

Keep in mind that the new season isn't starting tomorrow.  Petrie's got plenty of time to make moves, INCLUDING moves for other teams' newly-minted rookies.

Very good point.  My faith in GP says that if anyone were truly willing to bite on Artest (a troubled man at a deep position) he would be gone.

Let's hope someone's interested in Bibby.  And then maybe we could get Earl Watson or Luke Ridnour?

I hope fans wait until at least mid-season before they start booing the kid.  He's nineteen years old. Nineteen! He's still fumbling through the last stretch of puberty.  Don't get me wrong, I didn't want him either--already with braces on his knees I'm afraid his joints won't hold-up, let's pray he avoids a Shawn Livingston type disaster--but someone ought to able to teach him to play defense, take a charge, hold his ground in front of the hoop; if he learns that, odds favor the ball will hit his outstretched hands once a game. Maybe Bill Cartwright will come work with him.

Re: If Your Iceberg Has Not Already Melted
I was really down on this pick when it happened but I'm getting more used to it - honestly it's not what I wanted at all but what other options did we have? (Never mind - I would have taken Acie Law there over Hawes, we probably could have squeezed a 2nd from the Hawks if we had to for our troubles if we decided to trade him and pick Hawes).

Hawes can score - when Miller can score he's a good player. I get mad at Miller for being a sissy b*tch more than for his inept rebounding or defense. At least Hawes will give us some toughness down in the block, even if he doesn't have the skill set defensively quite yet.
