Carbon Monoxide Never Smelled So Sweet

Yesterday was filled with hubris and agitation, more than it should have been. Can you blame us? Since December, we've looked forward to this draft. When Mike Bibby was clanging jumpers and Ron Artest was getting arrested and Eric Musselman was screaming to no one in particular, we were calmly yet excitedly awaiting the lottery and the draft. By February, we were actually attempting to decipher our likely draft range. By March, we were calculating our draft odds. The season was lost, but our hope was not. But our hope didn't depend on April's results -- it depended on May and June.

That's why we're so frustrated. If nothing else -- damn near 50 losses and only a pittance of in-game smiles -- we were going to make some noise in the draft. Greg Oden and Kevin Durant were always pipe dreams, but Al Horford wasn't. Brandan Wright wasn't. Joakim Noah certainly wasn't. Yi Jianlian wasn't. Those guys excited us, thrilled us, made us ache for November 1 and a new start. Spencer Hawes? Maybe it's superficial and we're all reverse racists, self-loathers. But still, there's no quicker way to suck the wind out of someone's sails than to drop what some have called 'the next Todd Fuller' on their deck.

Nonetheless, I'll never stop being a fan of this team. Sadly, even if they hit the road and relocate to Nunavut, I'll still follow them. I've pounded on the 'In Petrie We Trust' drum too long to cut the cord on Kevin Martin, Francisco Garcia... and yes, Spencer Hawes. I think it's a questionable move, I think it's absurd Petrie couldn't get another pick anywhere, I weep when I see what Chris Mullin was able to do... and I would love to be proved wrong. There's no way in hell I'm booing Hawes, not on Day 1, not on Day 1,000. It's not his fault -- we should want him to succeed and thrive and be happy. I do.

Julian Wright will look sharp in New Orleans, and Brandan's going to be a beast in Oaktown. Joakim Noah is every bit the question mark Spencer encompasses, so we'll see how he fits in with Ben Wallace and crew. Al Thornton will likely drop 30 on us in December, and Yi Jianlian... well, has Yi returned to China yet? Forget all that. Spencer Hawes is a King, and we're going to cheer him on for the next 10 years... or until his knees give out. Whichever comes first.

Welcome to Sacramento, Spencer.

(Oh, and hi Whitey. Thanks for the plug this morning. For the record: I have absolutely no problem with you... it's your co-host whose brain/mouth perplexes me. And he's fricking Stephen Hawking compared to the afternoon guys.)

Well put. I haven't found any pre draft Todd Fuller analysis. God Help us if Hawes is that bad.

Re: Carbon Monoxide Never Smelled So Sweet
Good morning, STR brethren! Have we slept away some of our negative energy?

As you all can tell, I'm ok with Spencer Hawes as the 10th pick in this draft. But I agree with you TZ, I'd hoped Petrie could have worked some deals to get additional picks or move up in the first round. We need some more pieces, and Bibby/Artest/Miller aren't part of the long-term equation here.

There is still time though, so now we wait...

Re: Carbon Monoxide Never Smelled So Sweet
No. But the negativity was more about the lack of deals than Hawes himself anyway.

Some of us particularly me, cheered for the Lakers to win just so we can get a higher lottery pick. Imagined if were in Portland's spot and all it took was one extra loss and winning the tie-breaker. (I'm looking at the Utah game in April where the Jazz just completely blew it.)

UTAH POTENTIALLY COST US GREG ODEN.

Time to blow 'em up, boyz.

Re: Carbon Monoxide Never Smelled So Sweet
I look at the last road game, when we went down to LA and beat a Clippers team that needed a win. Imagine. The Clips win that game and they are in the playoffs instead of the Warriors (Dallas, hello!). We wind up tied with the Blazers and Bucks, meaning at the worst Noah and B.Wright are on the board for us, or maybe Jianlian, or maybe Oden. Where's my Prozac?

Re: Carbon Monoxide Never Smelled So Sweet
"There were other players that we liked there," said Petrie, who added that another team pursued the Kings' pick in an attempt to get Hawes. "But when you look at our roster and what we need to do going forward, and you look at the draft for next year and what centers might be available ... When you see a 19-year-old that has such a high skill level already and is still going to get better, I thought it really made sense."
Okay I know you are probably going to recap Amick's article. So whatever I just thought i'd point it out. HE'S LOOKING FOR SKILLS ALWAYS. Even with the knowledge that lack of athleticism is a problem. Ugh.

Re: Carbon Monoxide Never Smelled So Sweet
I think the the words "hollow" or "empty" apply here. We put so much energy into this over the past several weeks.  Mock drafts, lively conversation, passion by the rail car, and our reward is Spencer Hawes.
Spencer Hawes sort of became the running joke around here.  He was bad, Jason Smith was good. I like Smith too, but I never quite figured that one out.
I was not home for the draft, but it must be gut wrenching to see Jianlian drafted by a team that knows he does not want to play there, and then to be two picks away with B.Wright and Noah still on the board only to see them disappear almost as quickly.
So we're left with our running joke, except it wasn't funny anymore.
But here's the thing - Spencer Hawes might become a pretty good player.  Petrie determined (Petrie, not Gavin, not Joe) that the 19 YEAR OLD 7 FOOTER had more appeal than the swing man that has yet to develop his shot (J.Wright, who I would have picked) or the 24 year old swing man who did not impress during his workout (Thornton).  There really was no one else to take at #10 other than those guys.
I'm sure that there were offers for the #10 pick but nothing was to Petrie's liking.  So we get the TRUE CENTER from Washington, and we are left to trust Petrie's draft instincts, which have been pretty darn good over the years.
So we'll wait and see how Hawes develops. NOTE - If you've already given up on Quincy Douby jump ship now.  You won't have the stomach for Spencer Hawes.
Item last - Kid has a little burr under his saddle when it comes to his defense and rebounding.  He knows that he has to get physically stronger (as do B.Wright and Noah).  Wouldn't it be fun if he filled out, became a presence in the middle and we got to watch him go head to head with Oden for the next 15 years? Kings/Blazers, the hottest ticket in the NBA, 2010!

Re: Carbon Monoxide Never Smelled So Sweet
The most interesting question to me is more along the lines of this. What if Petrie didn't feel this was a very deep draft? What if he didn't feel having multiple lower picks was worth it? I hope that isn't the case but Petrie has his own agenda here. I'm curious to see what it was.

Bill Simmons' Draft Blog
Here's a comment from ESPN's Bill Simmons:

5:32: Looking disturbingly like Chris Mihm, Spencer Hawes goes 10th to the Kings. Now they have a young center who can't rebound or protect the rim, an aging center (Brad Miller) who can't rebound or protect the rim, a guy who started the biggest melee in NBA history (Ron Artest), the coach from "Hang Time" (Reggie Theus), tons of bad contracts, and owners (the Maloofs) who've made more reality-TV show appearances than every other NBA owner combined. What a mess. O.J. Mayo should just buy a house in Sacramento now and get it over with.

Re: Bill Simmons' Draft Blog
He shouldn't be talking, given the atrocity his franchise committed yesterday.

This will only work out of we get an athletic PF who can rebound well (Justin Williams in a year or two or a free agent sometime down the road) to pair with Hawes. Hawes will be better than Brad Miller but I'm not sold on him playing defense or rebounding or shot blocking.

Where this is funny and relevant you need to go to about the 4 minute mark.  Spencer Hawes and Screamin A.

Hey, I just had a flashback/flashforward. Spencer Hawes is passing out of the high and low post, creating easy scoring opportunities for K-Mart and Cisco and Douby the same way Divac and C-Webb used to do for Peja and Bibby and B-Jax. Justin Williams has become the next Ben Wallace. Bibby receives a warm ovation on his first visit to Sacramento. Ron-Ron not so much. New ARCO is rocking, and my date Jessica Alba is having the best time she's ever had...man, this carbon monoxide is great!!!

Well, I'll say one thing for both you and our new boy Spencer, Kusian, you're rare birds. I mean, you just don't hear too much squawking from W apologists these days. (Huh...I wonder why?) Heck even Charles "I don't care if what I say makes any damn sense as long as it gets me some pub" Barkley is off the W bandwagon these days.

As for manly virtues, I don't know about the old white guys in the sky boxes who watch sports while sipping bourbon, but I bet a poll of the dudes who actually play in the NBA might get 5%-10% Repubs. Tops. And weirdly enough I bet they're even richer than you, Kusian.

Speaking as a middle age white guy myself, my hero when I was a kid was Muhammed Ali (actually, still is). Also, Bill Russell, Wilt, Bill Walton, Kareem. Liberal ("pukes" as I believe you charmingly called them) all.

Anyway, as us live-and-let-live liberals like to say, it takes all kinds I guess. Whatever, dude.

Anyway, I think you'll find that I am one of the more reasonable voices on this site. So, I'll just let you have your say. (Plus, I depised "Fear and Loathing", so we'll probably never agree on anything :-)

But, let me say this for myself, in response to your comment about "old white guys in sky boxes who watch...," I am a former three time collegiate All-American. So, even if you don't like my politics, you can't argue that I haven't been in my share of wars. I have some concept of sports and what it takes to win.

After ranting like a lunatic last night I have now taken a few hours to compose myself and come up with some upside to last nights draft. Hawes is not Brad Miller, he is more like Vlade Divac and if we can re-institute the Princeton offense this might work out. I think I speak for all of us when I say that we need Pete Carril back to be a mentor to Reggie Theus and Spencer Hawes.

For what it's worth Ray Glier at MSNBC.com gave the Kings a B+ in his draft report card:

He writes: "The Kings should feel lucky. Spencer Hawes is a very skilled big man who could have been drafted by two teams ahead of the Kings. He played just one season at Washington, and has a bigger upside than Noah."

As some of you know, I was pulling pretty hard for Joakim to land here, but I thought this is worth reporting...
