The Terry Porter Conundrum

The Kings have watched their chosen one slip away. Nine candidates have been interviewed, none available and apparently desired. The Pistons have been fishing for six days now.

Why hasn't Geoff Petrie called Terry Porter?

No answers here, just theories. Again: JUST theories.

  1. Did Petrie want to hire Porter last season? When the Kings fired Rick Adelman last May, the Maloofs seemed to be in control, pushing Rick out the door and pushing for the hire of John Whisenant. The canon now states that Eric Musselman was an emergency compromise hire, rushed in to wow the Maloofs while Whisenant fluttered about. With the unceremonial dismissal Musselman received this spring, it can be fairly stated Petrie had lost no sleep over canning Eric. (Not that Petrie is cold, but Muss was not his guy.) Porter, last summer, was busy. He was leading a group trying to purchase the Blazers and their arena from Paul Allen. (How soon we forget how in trouble the new darling Blazers were only 12 months ago.) He could not seriously lead a bid for an NBA franchise and coach another team at the same time. Perhaps Petrie really wanted Porter to come to town and take over the Kings, thinking the Maloofs would buy into it and spare us from Whisenant. But Porter was thinking bigger, and snubbed Petrie, forcing a difficult situation to become more difficult. The Kings hired Muss, the Porter bid fell apart, Porter joined Flip Saunders in Detroit. Petrie's still mad... "Now you want the job? What about when I needed you to take the job?"
  2. Petrie and the Maloofs want someone with substantial defensive credibility. Porter was a good defensive player, but his Milwaukee teams were so not good on the defensive end. It would explain the push for Stan Van Gundy. It would explain why pundits are whispering about P.J. Carlesimo. It could explain why Porter isn't getting a phone call.
  3. Petrie is upset with the way Porter handled the potential to be interviewed in Sacramento. In a Sam Amick story on Monday, Petrie sounded a little perturbed about rumors out of Detroit regarding Porter's assumption he was up for the Sacramento job. The money passage: Porter, however, told people in Detroit before the Pistons were eliminated that he anticipated being interviewed, to which Petrie said, "I don't know anything about that." Petrie is mum as the Queen's mother. He lives by a code of silence when it comes to running the Kings, really. So hearing Porter talk to folks like he's already got the job, that doesn't reflect well on Porter in Petrie's eyes, I'm sure. That's probably unfair, but the last thing Petrie could want is a loudmouth ruining his gameplan.
  4. The Donovan-Van Gundy thing threw everything off. Billy Donovan was hired Friday. Van Gundy had his second Sacramento interview Saturday. Detroit was eliminated Saturday. At that point, Van Gundy looked pretty damn available. But Kurt Rambis had a second interview scheduled Sunday, so the Kings couldn't offer Van Gundy a contract immediately (though in retrospect they were clearly smitten with him). Donovan goes schitzo on Sunday. Monday morning comes, Van Gundy is the choice but Donovan's exit from Orlando reopens that job. Kings and Magic are at odds to woo Van Gundy. Several obstacles, including Pat Riley's compensatory ploy, give an advantage to Sacramento. The Kings get Van Gundy to come to Sacramento. Orlando works its stuff out, hires Van Gundy. This is Thursday. Kings are reeling, had a press conference planned. Back to the drawing board. Friday, today -- that's the first real opportunity they've had to consider Porter.
I think that's the most plausible theory at this point. Van Gundy was the first choice following his Saturday interview. There was no rush at the time, given Orlando's Donovan hire. Obviously, things changed and the Kings pushed hard. But it's a brand new ballgame. And Porter still wants to be a head coach.

Call him, Geoff.

Re: The Terry Porter Conundrum
First off great analysis. Just want to say that before engaging in some devil's advocate (yet again).

First/Second point: What if Terry Porter did want to be interviewed but couldn't because the Maloof's weren't interested in another offensive guy with connection to Geoff in Portland? Or that's the perception anyway. As far as Porter in Milwaukee what was that team supposed to do? Give up 95 points in a halfcourt setting? They were a young team rebuilding on the fly. It's not like they were on route to win a championship or anything. I think it's unfair to say Porter can't coach a defensive oriented team before he has the players to do it. Outside of Brian Skinner/Joe Smith/Desmond Mason who played consistent defense on Milwaukee? Heck is Mason ever consistent period? I'm not sure the Maloof's/Petrie were ever on the same page. Regardless of whether Porter snubbed Petrie last year could you blame him? What if the interview went poorly? What if the Maloof's rejected him thinking he should never get a real chance down the line to interview again? If I was Porter I might not have thrown my hat in that ring last year and expected it to be taken into consideration. I'm not sure if there was any way Terry Porter could look good in that scenario you put forth. One way he gets screwed by losing out the potential to interview for it a year later/down the road. On the other hand he makes Geoff happy and becomes a martyr. I know Geoff and Terry Porter have a connection but get real. Why would Terry Porter care that much?

3rd point: However, this is closer to what may be actually going on. The 1st point could swing either way really depending on how much of the truth is ever released (what's the likelihood of that happening?)upon any scenario of what happened with specifics of the Porter/Petrie/Maloof's scenario you put forth. This is the important part ot remember though as you point out. Geoff Petrie works under a COMPLETE CODE OF SILENCE. Porter's sentiment doesn't exactly breathe silence. On the other hand he could be trying to get himself a head coach gig with someone whom he has a personal background with. I can't blame him for that. There are only 30 head coaching jobs of which only a few openings come up. You gotta take any of them you can realistically get. Not everybody is Marc Iavaroni, and realistically he has tried for jobs that weren't glamorous like Portland in 2004 but he just didn't get it, where they can pick and choose. Even Iavaroni ended up in Memphis where the future may not be bright for 2 seasons at least if they decide to trade Pau Gasol. Which they should but anyway. I've digressed mightily.

The point is that Porter is in a no win situation. If he's too mouthy then he will lose any interview opportunity. On the other hand if he doesn't say anything or put a little public pressure out there what's the point of using back channels if Geoff is just angry? Really if Geoff Petrie is mad at Porter for last offseason then really that's as much on Geoff Petrie as it is Terry Porter. Porter has every right to pursue an opportunity like buying the Rose Garden. I find it amusing that the idiot hick of Oklahoma City expects Seattle to pay for a new arena when the team down the road had multiple prospective buyers from the 'private sector' trying to buy the Rose Garden. Anyway back to the topic at hand (again). If Geoff is mad at TP then so be it. It's up to Geoff to bridge that gap and make it work. If he doesn't offer TP an interview I'd be very dour about Geoff's ability to find a coach in this situation, even with the note of it being a crapshoot somewhat.

4th point: Can't disagree with a single thing you've said there.

Last but not least it's a sound theory. A few details might be a tad different but the outcome is the same. Put your ego aside and get the best guy for the job. You would be doing yourself, and your team, a huge dis-service to let a little anger ,over a previous season or media session that didn't really say much, cloud how you continue what had to be a somewhat disappointing coaching search so far. If I can remind folks of something Rick Adelman was hired well after the 1998 draft. Eddie Jordan was fired in August. The idea that a coach needs to be on board before the draft is somewhat typical but not necessary. There is no way Terry Porter is not going to convince Geoff Petrie to draft a guy.

Re: The Terry Porter Conundrum
Apparently Geoff Petrie has valid reasons for passing on Porter as a candidate.  It doesn't matter what those reasons might be--the GM and the coach need to work together for the mutual benefit of the team.  Why create a situation where there is friction and animosity when it can easily be avoided?

Terry Porter is just another "hot candidate of the day," like many others who have fallen by the wayside.  There are still some very favorable faces out there--unfortunately I don't think very many of the highly qualified candidates would be interesterd in coming to Sacramento.

Re: The Terry Porter Conundrum
Well I think if Geoff is angry at Terry Porter for last season, I think that's on Geoff. I'm not sure Terry Porter was in a reasonable situation to try and interview when only Elie and Musselman were brought in as candidates.

What I mean is there didn't seem to be due diligence going on with regards to the coaching search last season and if Porter felt like there wasn't much of a chance of getting the job then, and by trying to take that chance decreasing it in the future, then what blame can you place on Porter?
