Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?

Just days after the NBA draft, we already have a 1st round pick demanding a trade. That sure didn't take long. Chinese superstar import Yi Jianlian is apparently asking to avoid ever playing for the Milwaukee Bucks, seeking a "bigger market" with a "larger Chinese population".

Anyone here prefer Spencer Hawes to Yi? Raise your hands...

So Yi, here's what the City of Sacramento has to offer to you:

1. A long history and large population of Chinese descent.

Culture California: "Hundreds of Chinese came to the Sacramento area in the mid-1800s in search of riches. After the gold ran out, many stayed to work as merchants, cooks, farmers or laborers, helping to build the Transcontinental Railroad and reclaiming delta land." and "With approximately 19 percent of Sacramento residents of Asian or Pacific Islander heritage, you're sure to find festivities celebrating just about every Asian culture throughout the year."

2. A large population eager to promote you and your skills.

The World Almanac 2007 cites Milwaukee's population as 578,887, and that number is declining, down 3 percent from 2000 to 2005. In contrast, while Sacramento has only 456,441 in population in the same survey, our city is growing at a rate of 12.1% from 2000 to 2005, practically booming! And if you count Stockton (286,926 with a 17.7% growth rate), and Modesto (207,011 with a 9.6% growth rate), you're basically at a million people, all ready to raise the roof for Yi to take on Yao.

3. A new generation of Kings fans ready to embrace something new.

Let's face it, Yi. Kevin Martin and Justin Williams just might be all we've got to be excited about right now. Another year of Kenny Thomas, Mike Bibby, Brad Miller and Ron Artest would be pure torture. And we're not exactly that enthused about Spencer Hawes, and won't be until he drops 30 at some point this season, something I'm not exactly holding my breath for. If you join the Kings, you would immediately become our #1 or #2 option, and we could grow the team around you. I promise.

You can also let Milwaukee know that all those guys I mentioned would be ecstatic to play in Milwaukee, especially Ron-Ron. So make it happen.

4. We're on the West Coast! You can throw a rock and hit China!

Dude. You're 7 foot tall. So if you come out here on the West Coast and jump while facing west, I swear you can see Beijing. Don't believe me? Sign a contract first, and then I'll show you. Just sign a contract. Seriously. Besides, do you really want to add two or three more hours to a trip back and forth to the mainland from Milwaukee when your body frame doesn't exactly lean itself to fitting in coach? And I heard Milwaukee only offers coach. No first class. It's weird, but yeah, don't believe anything they tell you. The Kings would let you fly first class.

So, Yi, I understand you're frustrated. I would be too. Milwaukee? Seriously? I thought that was part of Southern Canada or something. That's not even the NBA most years, man. Come to the Kings. Tell your agents that it's the only place you'll play. We'll be waiting.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
my list of what i think his handlers want to go to:
los angeles
new york
san francisco
boston
philly
chicago
houston

going by the way his last name is pronounced (ee instead of yee), his handlers will prefer a mandarin environment; which sacramento can't really provide.    it's not that we (cantonese and mandarin) can't communicate (that's what the written language is for); but based on a strict comfortability standpoint, learning english and another dialect will be difficult but the cities mentioned above have prominent mandarin neighborhoods.  it'd be cool to have him; but, assuming he is not familiar with cantonese, there are better fits out there that could offer better packages for his services

Shh.... ixnay on eality-re.

I say we go for it. Besides, we can convince him that Sacramento is basically a suburb of San Francisco if necessary.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
So now either you and dun are admitting your Chinese (which is a strong reality) or that you know alot about the language and have done more research into Yi than I care to here's a couple problems I have with Yi.

I hate guys who only work out for certain teams, Chinese or no. I actually remember getting into arguments with some on Yahoo years back that Yao Ming was going to be a better player than Jason Williams. The argument against Yao was that he was unknown and that Williams was a known commodity. However, I think the advantage Yao had was he was generally considered 1 of the top 2 or 3 prospects of that draft anyway.

At the same time Yi's handlers were looking for the right 'fit' which makes me go 'huh'? 30 guys, and only a handful have better contracts in Europe, get a chance to be selected in the 1st round. I hope Yi plays in Milwaukee just to see his torture. Plus that might help his ability to adjust too. There was a time when dark skinned cats from the islands in the Caribbean had to adjust to places like Minnesota and Chicago in April. They managed. I say we give Yi a chance to drink a few Miller's before we close the door on his comfort level there. Plus there is the unintentional comedy of his first taped conversation with Andrew Bogut.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
yes, i am chinese.  but the reality is that the chinese government wants their players in a market with high chinese market (mandarin specifically as it is the national language).  everyone can speculate about the politics and economic conditions that comes with yi being in an area like LA versus milwaukee.  i don't argee with it but that's what the cards look like.  i say, if he can play, it shouldn't matter where him plays; but i'm not one of his handlers

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
Well and I am not. But even I know, having known a few Cantonese in my time living here lol, that the culture's are somewhat different. That being said does Houston have a big Mandarin population? (I wouldn't know it's why I'm asking.)

The biggest issue I have with China is there getting involved in the draft process (as I point out in response to jjham below) and the social structure of those sports academies.

Last but not least I agree with you on his ability to play. Which is why Milwaukee I think took him. I think he would fit in very well with Bogut and Villanueva and it would be an interesting trio to watch develop together over the next few years. And since none of us is Yi's handlers, one whom I know to be American (i forget which super agent it is), nobody will know that question I suspect until everyone does.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
not too sure about houston's mandarin population as the only person i met from houston wasn't that versed in mandarin or cantonese but the last named indicated more mandarin pronunciation.  but houston does have TWO chinatowns.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
Kinda.... but they both are pretty small. That is one thing I noticed about moving to Houston from Cali. I said to myself my first week here, "Where did all the Asian people go?" I am a scientist so I am exposed to quite a few people of asian descent (majority Chinese), and it feels like home. On the streets of Houston is another matter. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of Asians here, but when you consider that Houston is arguably the third largest city now, the proportions are much different out here compared to the Westside.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
Hey dun...did you know that Stockton has a little Chinatown in South Downtown? It abuts the Filipino center & Little Manila at the Crosstown Freeway...great Chinese food here as well...some mandarin offerings at On Luck Sam's(in existence since 1892 on lafayette street....Tell Yi's handlers that Stockton is a suburb of the East bay(where most of the new homebuyers are from anyway)....Of course, it would be helpfull if he spoke Vietnamese or Hmong as a second language.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
I would pull the trigger on that in .02 seconds. I think we'd probably have to throw in someone else, maybe a Garcia or Douby. It'd be a tough pill to swallow but I'd still do that.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
Who would play the point? It's not like the Kings are a hot free-agent landing spot at this moment and for the money to work out the Kings would have to take on some pretty crappy contracts (Bobby Simmons).
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
If we made this trade we'd be rebuilding I think...so we could take care of that in next year's draft, which is pretty point guard rich, and we'd for sure have a top pick because our team would suck. If we could re-sign Martin, this would probably work out well.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
If Douby is the one that's traded it's time for Cisco to step up to the point...he has some ability there if he can exercise some patience with his energy...worth a try if we couldn't get a Chauncey Billups (too rich of a contract I think).

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
If Yi comes, I want Spencer to stay as well. I would offer Bibby for Yi but then to think about it more seriously, Mo Williams looks like a lock to stay in Milwaukee. The Bucks have apparently offered Mo Williams 40 million dollars for 5 years and Memphis got Mike Conley Jr, so that's not an option anymore.
Time to blow 'em up, boyz.

Has anybody at this site actually seen this guy play against decent competition?

Here is his state line today versus in the US - in the 19 and under international league game.

23 minutes
15 points (3 - 8 FG, 8 - 12 FT)
8 rebounds

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
I don't think that Yi will ever play for the Bucks. There will be a lot of teams in the loop for his services and if he doesn't get dealt he can stay in China. It seems to me that Yi and his handlers have all the power and the Bucks are stupid for drafting this guy when they told them not to.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
And the nba can't allow China to dictate what markets it's players go into. Just the way it is. The china thing only hurts Yi, and additional Chinese players if he does do that, and the only way Milwaukee gives him up is if a team gives up many things to get him making it worth their while to give in basically. I can't see a team doing that for Yi, even with his talent level. Milwaukee holds his draft rights.

The whole China US relation thing here is bullshit. China and the US have interesting relations and whatever happens with Yi won't change that. Personally I think the bigger story is that China is so heavily involved with Yi's draft stock, by playing him  against 16-19 year old's when he's 20-21 years old, and even worse with their sports academies dedicated to churning these guys out. The NBA doesn't care in the interim but eventually this practice will burn them out, similar to the Tsitkivilli's of the world who came over well too soon. Well I think that will be true of these pro club guys like Yi, and Yao, who don't come over quite as ready as China would like them to be perhaps. I think the bigger issue is China's practice of how these academies work within the larger social structure is a bigger issue than any surrounding issue with the political/social structure of Yi is.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
Yi has been actually playing against international competition in major tournaments, though.

BTW, from what I've read, the misunderstanding on his age comes from a typo on a program (said he was born in 84 instead of 87) but honestly, I wouldn't be fussed if he's 22 anyways.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
Europeans have been staying overseas for years, I don't understand why we have a problem with how Yi's people are handling this situation. If there are only two big name Asian players in the NBA I would hope they would be in a community who can relate and support them. It's not like the Bucks didn't see this coming. Artest and a lottery protected future #1 and I'm in (although I don't think Yi plays D or rebounds well either). And it isn't a proven fact that Yi is older than 19, it's still only speculation (passport says 19).
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
If I was Milwaukee, there's no way I would take Bibby, Artest, or anyone on the Kings roster, short of Kevin Martin, for Yi. No chance. They must have expected it might come down to this, and I am sure they know they have the upper hand here because Yi is not returning to China. I think they will bide their time until the Yi camp folds, or until they get an offer they can't refuse. Which means a nice package of young talents and picks or a bonafide allstar. Unfortunately, neither of which the Kings can offer. I don't forsee Milwaukee panicing and getting fleeced.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
For everyone calling this impossible: Golden State traded an $11 million non-All Star shooting guard for the #8 pick.

I think it's unlikely -- especially while keeping Hawes, and Milwaukee doesn't need a skilled center with Bogut in town -- but it's not impossible.

Golden State is concentrating on Garnett, Houston on Rashard Lewis, the Lakers on an immediate impact player, Seattle on fitting the pieces around Durant, NY on... something other than Yi, the Nets on Jermaine O'Neal. Why not Sactown?

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
I'll be shocked if Garnett ends up in GS. I'll be even more shocked if Shard ends up in houston (at least Garnett is financially possible). As far as JO in NJ that would be their kind of dumb move the El Stupido's would attempt.

The kings COULD pull off Yi, it's just not as likely as maybe some would hope. Plus can he do anything other than shoot over a chair yet?

POPULATION COMMENT: Sac County is actually over 1 million people (Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, Rancho Cordova, Antelope, Roseville, West Sac, etc).  You don't need to add Stockton and Modesto to inflate the numbers.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
How about Artest to Minnesota, Cory Brewer to Milwaukee, Yi to Sacramento? Brewer would work out better for the Bucks anyway and if Minnesota doesn't move K-G they are going to have to add a solid piece to go with him. Everybody wins, we get a second top 10 pick, Bucks get the 7 pick instead of the six and the T-Wolves have a running mate to go along side Garnett.

The Bucks are in real danger of losing bargaining power over Yi. Sacramento was allowed access to Yi in pre-draft workouts which means his handlers deemed Sacramento a viable option.

We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
I like this one. More plausible than a trade for Yi straight up. But does Minnesota have the cap room to take Artest's salary without giving any up? More players would have to be included I think...

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
The Bucks would probably ask for a 2nd rounder from the T-Wolves to make up for the difference in #6 and #7 (to prove to themselves that they got value out of the deal.) I think the T-Wolves would want more than Artest for Brewer and Ricky Davis/Mark Blount, so I think we'd have to throw in a protected #1 pick in there (lottery protected for a good 7 years, haha). So Minny gets Artest/protected #1 for Brewer, #2 in 2008, and Davis. Bucks get Brewer and #2 in 08 for Yi, and we get Yi and Davis for a protected #1 and Artest. I think that would probably satisfy everyone involved, good idea jjham

Didn't the Bucks view Yi as the 3rd best player in the draft, so if thats true I can't see who they would want off the Kings Roster

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
I'm sure they don't fully believe that, given that their time with him has been limited to say the least, and the GM basically drafted him off hearsay. With a three team trade you could probably overcome that...although I don't think they'd be too interested in Artest, maybe they'd think about Bibby and Hawes (which probably doesn't work salary wise come to think of it)

Re: Can We Convince Yi to Become a King?
Regardless of what the Bucks feel about Yi if he won't play there his value is going to drop quickly if he forces his way out. There's nothing like having to trade a player to make his value plummet.
