When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?

The Miami press is still constantly reporting that Pat Riley is after Mike Bibby and/or Ron Artest, and every report seems to come with the conditional 'Kings want more than what Miami's offering' statement.

Eventually, though, you'd think the return package will be good enough, by way of Miami sweetening the pot. With a lack of assets, it'd be hard. But if Miami wants these players, they'd find a way, right?

Two things could happen in the next few days to ramp up Miami's push for Bibby:

  1. Steve Blake could sign elsewhere, likeli in Portland or with the Lakers, or possibly in Cleveland. He will go for the full midlevel. He's the best affordable free agent prospect at PG.
  2. Philadelphia could pull Andre Miller completely off the market or trade him somewhere other than Miami. He would seem to be the only top-flight point guard on the trade market besides Bibby.
As for Artest: The only thing I imagine involved there is Petrie's asking price. It's obvious he doesn't want to get ripped off, and you can't blame him. We as a collective would just as soon like to see him jettisoned for nothing, just as long as he isn't back next year. Petrie obviously can't do that, not when Artest is so valuable as compared to the rest of the tradeable assets (Bibby, Brad Miller). At some point, though, the price will need to change. No fish are biting.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
I really hope this gets pulled off.  I guess it's like waiting for Christmas to come, and your mom keeps telling you, "Your Uncle Ron is coming, and he's going to bring you something.  Not sure what it is yet; it could be great, it could be a lump of coal."  I guess the difference is that my Uncle Ron doesn't have a rap sheet (or a bad rap album), and at least at Christmas you know the date.  This wait we're in seems interminably worse.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
With Miami's draft over their pick traded, who might they be offering now? James Posey... ummm maybe I would pass as well.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
I still think that we should keep Ron over Bibby, just on a talent standpoint. Although it wouldn't be the worst idea to keep the current roster together for 20 games to see what happens...Cleveland and Miami are probably still going to need point guards by then, and if you have to trade Artest there will be a market for him.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
What's the point of waiting?  This team has proven over a full 82 game season that they're terrible.  It's not like they even showed flashes of life.  The rebuild has been stalled for far, far too long as it is.  The time is now.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
Just for clarification, I mean there's no sense waiting 20 games into the season.  Waiting until free agents sign does make sense.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
There is sense to it if Bibby and Artest start better than they did last year, and a few aging teams like Miami get desperate.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
Yeah, it wouldn't be the worst thing to give up and go in full rebuild mode - the pick of Hawes is a clear indicator that's the direction we're going. But Bibby is talented (albeit a bit selfish and not a great defender) and so is Artest, and I think it's only fair to give Theus a month to see how well they can work together under his system. As long as they both defer to K-Mart more, we should be okay in those positions. As for the frontcourt...yikes

by coachtheus on Jul 2, 2007 12:33 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
I don't see Bibby as selfish. Very rarely does Bibby take a bad shot and everything he does is within the offense. If he shot 44% from the field last year he would have scored 20 a game and none of us would be talking trade. When the Kings were loaded with Webb, Peja, Divac and Christie, Bibby was a perfect fit, a good passer and shooter who went to a spot and knocked down the J or a very capably pick and pop player.

Remember that the Kings made him into this type of player, it's possible that a new system could bring out the old Bibby.

We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
Once Lewis signs somewhere there is going to be a new market for Artest of Lewis losers. Petrie would be a fool not to wait unless he can package Ron in a sign and trade for something else. By my estimation the Heat have nothing that the Kings could possibly want besides Wade and we all know that's not happening.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
Nothing?  Would we take an expiring contract and a first-rounder?

by misterbrister on Jul 2, 2007 9:24 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
No, the expiring contracts are useless if no one wants to sign with you and the first rounder will be a mid-20's pick if Bibby or Artest are added to the Heat. The Kings are already set-up to be a major player in the market three years from now when Thomas, Miller and Reef come off the books and that will be a year after Bibby leaves so the Kings should have 15-20 mill in cap space to make a run at the best and the brightest of that off season. It is also possible that the Kings will players in two years when Bibby expires and can be signed and traded, Artest will be gone and possible sign and trade and teams may deal for the expiring contracts of Miller, Reef and Thomas. If you have a ton of money you can get multiple free-agents to sign making the Kings more attractive especially if Martin has developed like we all hope.

We shouldn't be looking for a short term solution as fans, this is a mess but there is light at the end of the tunnel. We can only hope that Petrie will still be around to rebuild it again. A couple of right moves and solid drafts and the Kings can be back soon.

In the mean time we as fans should be content with a borderline 7,8,9,10 team that is on the fringe of the playoffs, probably looking in but close enough to make it interesting. This team can win 35 to 40 games this year in my opinion which really isn't that bad. Making trades just to trade makes no sense to me.

We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
Artest for Jason Williams and 2008 1st would work for me. Maybe Riley isn't willing to give that 1st up. Who knows. I don't see how the Heat can afford Bibby but that could be interesting too. Clearly Riley is trying to outwait Petrie to get what he exactly wants here. Clearly Petrie isn't interested in Riley's offers since he wants more. One of them will have to blink and it's my guess that Riley will if Petrie waits long enough. Riley will blink and Petrie won't. He clearly doesn't mind making this fan base antsy with his moves.

Are you assuming this is Ron's last year in Sacramento (assuming we don't trade him)? Then that trade makes a bit of sense - still I think that we can do better than a mid-20s pick and a backup PG.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
Another point I should have made here is that for all the teams trying to pull off a deal for KG. Petrie might want to use Artest as a chip to help pull off a 3 team or 4 team deal.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
That's the part that interests me, though it's so obtuse at this point that I have troble getting my arms around the potential opportunties. With guys (and their contracts) like KG and Lewis being shopped around, could Bibby's talent and contract become a ticket into the game? Maybe not to secure KG or Lewis, but to help facillitate the trade and thereby gain something back. There probably is nothing there, but it did give me the chance to use the words "obtuse" and "facillitate" in the same post.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
The comments on this site seem almost universal in their acceptance that Artest and Bibby - or at least one - will be traded.  Any expectation from any of you that, perhaps, King's management is interested in seeing how each might respond to Theus?

I've heard Theus interviewed a couple of times, and he seems specifically interested in working with Bibby and talks about his strength as a shooting guard in the right line-up.  I have not heard him talk about Ron in any specific way - doesn't mean he has not; I just have not heard it.

I, for one, will be very surprised if both are traded and will not be surprised if both are here when the season begins. GP is too smart and too patient to just trade for the sake of trading. Obvious flaws - professional and personal - aside, these are two very talented players.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
I have a couple of issues with Bibby and/or Artest not being traded.
  1. Not enough shots to go around. If either Bibby or Artest goes, that creates 17 shots a game. Give Martin a quarter of those, Miller a quarter of those, and the other half to the replacement, which would be Garcia for Artest and who knows for Bibby. Better offensive balance and more touches for our most effective offensive players.
  2. If Artest stays Garcia does not play as much and there is no way we ever get a return on our investment on Salmons.
  3. You can't rely on Artest, unless he has magically grown up in two months. And make no mistake, he will opt out at the end of the year.
  4. Neither one of these guys are our future, so let's start building now. I don't include Miller or K9 (woof!) in this thought process because I don't think they have any current value vs. their respective contracts.
Now, if you can't get one quality scorer in trade you can't trade both Bibby and Artest, unless you want to watch five guys cover Kevin Martin. If that's the case it would be nice to deal Artest now and wait until closer to the deadline to deal Bibby.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
great points kusian.  i don't think we will see any moves at all until at least the trade deadline.  if there would have been anything, it would have been during the draft because petrie wanted to get back into the first round and rebuild the roster with young talent.  i think that theus will get a shot with these guys (let's not forget that this was the same team that almost upset the spurs in the first round two years ago- i know that was with bonzi, but i take k-mart and his great potential than bonzi any day).

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
There's a lot of "ifs" but the Kings are good enough to make the playoffs IMO (Miller and Bibby need to step it up though). I am of the opinion that the Kings really underachieved all year (partly due to Mussleman, partly due to bad team chemistry, partly due to an unfavorable balance of close games)...I'm still interested to see how we play.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
the Kings aren't good enough to make the playoffs in the Western Conference.  No way, no how.  As presently configured, these guys are headed for an 11th or 12th-place finish.

WC teams that are clearly better than the Kings, in approximate order:

  1. San Antonio
  2. Dallas
  3. Phoenix
  4. Utah
  5. Houston
  6. Warriors (I don't like the Richardson trade, but they still have Ellis at the 2).
  7. LA Lakers
  8. Trail Blazers
  9. New Orleans
  10. Seattle (Durant will win ROY running away).

On the other hand, scoring a high lottery pick next year would not be the worst thing.  There's major talent in the 2008 draft--especially major international talent, which is GP's specialty.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
No doubt about the first five on your list. Should the Kings make the playoffs they would be surely throttled by any of those teams.
I think folks are a little quick on Portland and Seattle. They are going to be relying heavily on rookies and that old rookie wall is not a myth.  Both of those teams are going to scare me more in 2008-09.
Did you forget Denver or do you just not think much of them?
The Warriors, Lakers, Hornets, Kings, Clippers and T-Wolves kind of all fall into one group.  Who among these teams will be the healthiest and happiest?  Among these teams will be the final playoff entrants and the right to face the best teams in the NBA in the 1st round.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
right you are.  I forgot Denver, which should probably be #6 or #7 on that list; Iverson and Melo are going to be nasty given a full season together.

I think a 10- to 15-game jump is not out of the question for the Blazers next season.  They've got a young team, true, but their talent level is off the charts.  I can't believe they snagged McRoberts in the second round.  Fernandez is also a very dangerous player.

Warriors, Hornets, and Lakers clearly trump Kings, Clippers, and T-Wolves, in my mind.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
One thing about the Warriors, and I preface this with the fact that they are not done putting their team together yet, they are awfully thin right now.
Today, their starting lineup would be Biedrens, Harrington, Jackson, Davis and Ellis. That leaves Foyle, O'Bryant, Jasikevicius, B. Wright and probably Belinelli (as long as he comes over) on their bench.  Pietrius is a restricted free agent. Barnes is an unrestricted free agent. Richardson is gone. That is one thin team that will have about $15 million to fill three or four roster spots if Pietrius does not come back, or probably about $10 million for two or three spots if he does come back.  A Baron Davis injury here or a Stephen Jackson meltdown there and these guys become...well, us last year. I'm not taking away their great playoff performance but they did make the playoffs by one game last year. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'...

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
I agree with Kusian's line of thinking that we will probably see pretty much the same roster next year.  I think Petrie will allow Theus to see what he can do with Bibby and Ron.  I doubt Theus/Petrie will want to blowup the roster completely as much as we would all like to see it unless another team is going to actually want to trade fair market value back. Petrie will never go into firesale mode and Theus im sure doesn't want a squad of rookies, castoffs, and expiring contracts going into his first season. If anything, we might see a smaller trade of a Thomas or Salmons for someone with a similarly long contract like Troy Hudson or Etan Thomas.

Re: When Will Petrie Cave to Miami?
When was the last time Petrie acted in haste, I'd wager the next time is the first time.  I can see him either out weighing Riley who I think has more pressure on him as the window with O'Neil and Wade is rapidally closing or its already shut and Riley needs help on that Roster.  The Kings expectations currently are not that high.

Petrie has never acted (well apart from the Maloofs help in the Artest deal) in accodence to the wishes of the media or the fans, look at the Hawes pick.  I'm sure he has had some lousy offers for Artest but why give him away for a lousy contract or crap talent, would it not make more sense to let him walk and take the cap space, or maybe deal him to a contender at the trade deadline or to a team like the Lakers who are in a panic to please Kobe.
