Mikki Moore and Money Money Money

The hopelessly starry-eyed naive side of me always wants to believe that players move from team to team looking for a chance to win, or improve the chances of their new squad to win. I'd like to think that after careful analysis of the current squad, and self-inspection as to their particular skill set, players are occasionally willing to play for less than the top dollar in the name of going after a trophy.

But... it seems I might as well rent a bunch of Disney DVDs or sit down for a marathon viewing of the Lifetime network if I want sappiness of that nature, because more likely than not, for professional athletes, it's all about the bling.

Mikki Moore, the latest Kings acquisition, says as much in a piece from the Staten Island Advance, where he says he'd have loved to remain a Net, but the amount of money the Kings offered him was too much to refuse, as he gained pressure from all corners, including his agent and other players.

Money quotes:

"(The Nets) offered me 10.3 (million). Sacramento offered me 18 (million). That would have been a lot of money to leave on the table."
"...I was thinking to myself, 'Should I take that cut? Should I take that cut?' but my agent was like, 'I'm not going to let you do this.'"
"(Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson) told me if I turned down a lot of money, they were going to fight me," said Moore, who is engaged and plans to marry next summer. "They know it's a business and they knew I wanted to play with them. And I know that they wanted me back, but they told me I have to think about my family and the long-term."

He's absolutely right, because 10 million can only get you so far these days, what with the price of gasoline, movie tickets and everything...

It's obvious why his agent told him to go for the higher pile of cash. That's how he makes his living. It's understandable that his fellow players want him to make more, so they in turn can command more... but what's missing from this conversation is anything like "I joined Sacramento because they could really use a guy like me," or "I joined the Kings to challenge for a title..." Instead, it's all about the money. Money, money, money.

Considering we're set up to give Kenny Thomas $23 million over the next three seasons, and NBADraft.net says the guy "appears to be on cruise control", can we continue to afford to throw big cash at guys whose sole goal it is to get paid? Or am I too much of a fan and not enough of a realist to expect it's about more than the Benjamins?

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
I think we are all happier as sports fans not knowing it's about the money. But 99% of the time, it is.

The bigger question, is will the player still be professional and productive once he's out of his comfort zone?

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
Come on, This is Moore's first multi-year contract after being around the league (and D-League) and waived several times in his career. He's a guy who SHOULD be getting the most he can. He's already 31 and this may be his last shot. I'm happy for him.

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
Good, let's be happy for him. I want him to come in and be a dominating force for the Kings. But I think the agent should help spin his comments such that it's more PR friendly.

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
At least he's honest. I'm tired of hearing old time athletes didn't care about money that they played for the love of the game. I would rather a guy be honest than spin it with a good PR angle. At least we know the guy came here for money officially.

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
5% APR, which is what my savings account is at the moment, on 18 mil, is 900,000 dollars a year! Just the interest on his money is 24 times more than the mean household income in Sacramento.

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
Have we seriously reduced ourselves to complaining about a guy that has busted his ass in every form of pro basketball for the better half of the last decade, for not taking $7.7 million dollars less?

In real word terms, that's like passing up and offer of $60,000 at Intel to stay making $34,000 at HP. Would you pass up the job at Intel? Didn't think so..........

Be happy for the guy. He worked hard and now he gets his cheddar.

We as Kings fans will whine about anything lately...........

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
Seems people are taking this a different way. I'm not complaining he took the money. He just needs to talk more about how he will help the Kings than he talks about how he'd rather have been on the Nets for the same price, or how much more rich he is as a result of the deal.

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
Not exactly Reverend. I'm saying the conversation paraphrased in the originating thread only shows how corrupt the material values of these men are (they are not solely to blame, only out of touch with the life of the average denizen). Think how semantically silly it is to call Miki Moore a journeyman in the same sentence we say he makes eighteen million dollars. Think of other people you'd call a journeyman. I just hired one the other day, he makes twenty an hour and he's pretty damn happy about it. For them to say, "Hey take the extra 7 mil. We'd love to have you here and get to play together; but you got to get paid."  Really?  he needs to get paid?

And another thing. No one pays up 8 million in an auction, which is what free agency is, unless the broker is providing each side with asymetric information.

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
I'm really confident that Moore is no Jerome James. The guy is a hard worker and would give his all night in and night out.

I also hope he's not a Kenny Thomas. :-)

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
I'm with you on that, Louis. Everyone knows that these guys usually take the most money (most people would), so if you're Mikki Moore why confirm the obvious, unless it's something like "The Kings made me a great offer, and while I will miss the guys here in New Jersey I am sure looking forward to helping a team that is showing that it sure values me." I get the feeling Mikki hasn't had the mic in front of him a lot of his career, so I'll cut him a little slack.

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
I read the post and was gonna say something about Moore working hard for a decade just to earn the financial security some rookies get right after being drafted, it's already been said tho, so how about, go grab some offensive rebounds already!

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
C'mon louismg this is pro sports here, cut him some slack.  Its not like the Nets offered 10.3 and the Kings came in with 10.5 mil.  The Kings are going to pay him almost DOUBLE the amount of money which is amazing for a guy who has been given the door more times than a Jehovah witness in his basketball career.  I invite everyone to take a look at his player bio in hoopshype.com to appreciate his journey.  I for one am eager to cheer for the guy.  He made it obvious he loved playing for the Nets but why should a guy in his position take such a smaller deal when he has been dumped on by team after team.
Damn you Robert Horry!!!

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
this signing isn't that bad.  the rebounding is a concern, but has it never been.  but moore is mobile, from the looks of it developed a 15ft. jumper, and isn't making kenny thomas money.  i think the dream scenario is that artest, bibby, and thomas opt out of their deals next year; so about 30mill will be off the books.  but what to do with brad miller

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
Thomas doesn't have an opt out clause so you can kill that part of your dream scenario.  Beside both Thomas and his agent would both have to suffer some sort of mad cow disease of the brain to even consider opting out of his contract.  Sit back and enjoy the remaining 3 years of the "Kenny Thomas experience".  I'm pretty sure Mike's only option to opt out was this year.  Artest I would imagine is probably 50/50 as to opting out next year most likely depending on how many run-in's with the law he gets into.
Damn you Robert Horry!!!

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
Thomas does have an early termination clause that he can invoke next year, but he won't.

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
Hmmm.. are you sure?  If so that would make Kenny Thomas' agent the greatest of all time.  7 year deal over $50 million with a player option for poodle-9?  No wonder Billy King was looking to trade Kenny before the ink on the contract had dried.
Damn you Robert Horry!!!

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
There is a slight difference here.  It's not an option that K9 (woof!) has to exercise to extend the contract. It is a full term contract that has a provision for an early out at his discretion. It is very unlikely that he would do that, but if someone were desperate enough to wave a three year MLE with the promise of more playing time at him, he might at least consider it.

Re: Mikki Moore and Money Money Money
FWIW...

I tend to like it when players sign for the most money.  It helps the competitive balance of the league.  Obviously the Sprewell-esque "I have to feed my family" type comments are bad PR when the MINIMUM salary is more money than us schlubs will ever make.  But at the same time, if every player actually behaved as if the money were secondary, then the best teams in the league, the ones with a chance to win a title, would always have their pick of the top free agents (which is of course already the case to a large extent).

Mikki Moore, signing by far the biggest contract of his 11 year career, and a rather modest one at that by NBA standards, is hardly the poster boy for Gordon Gayno 'Greed is good.'  But thank goodness that there are Joe Johnson's out there, who'd rather take the money and give the fans in Atlanta hope than play in Phoenix and win 60 games.

For the record...

That's supposed to be Gordon Gekko from the movie Wall Street.  Not Gordon Gano from the Violent Femmes, who as far as I know is not overly greedy.

Mrs33, what you may already know about Kings fans is that they truly want to believe. Once the season starts Mikki will have the hearts of all Kings fans, no questions asked. It will be up to him to keep those hearts. Kings fans love effort and Mikki is an effort guy. Sounds like a good match.
