The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy

As louismg noted this morning, the Kings have moved their focus to backup point guard. Mike Wilks will reportedly get an audition. If he's lucky, he'll get the Jason Hart Memorial Seventh-String Point Guard Locker.

Wilks is a 28-year-old journeyman, late of Seattle's parade of flawed ones (with noted compatriates Luke Ridnour and Earl Watson). Wilks played a similar number of minutes as Ronnie Price did this past season, and Mike's career high for minutes was barely more.

A comparison, if you will. (All statistics via basketball-reference.)

Name    Pt40  Ast40   TO40     2FG/3FG/FT%   PER
Price   13.6    3.4    2.3  .430/.323/.673  10.5
Wilks   12.7    5.9    2.3  .484/.333/.786  12.7

So there you have it: Wilks appears to be better than Price at all levels -- he gets more assists, he shoots better (and less). Those are the key things with a backup point guard: Pass the ball, and when you have to shoot, shoot decently. Price, for the good we've seen in him, did not do either thing very well in his brief stay in Sacramento.

We know Price can bring it defensively, though. Sadly, I haven't seen enough Mike Wilks over the years to cast aspersion or compliment on his oppositionary mettle. I've sent out feelers to those whom would know, though I can't imagine tomes will come down, given the player's lack of long-term residence before any set of eyes.

Honestly, barring a Bibby trade which does not return a starting level point guard, this player -- be it Wilks or some other -- will not see much playing time at all. It was a joke above, the locker of the 'Seventh-String Point Guard.' But honestly: Mike Bibby, John Salmons, Francisco Garcia, Quincy Douby, Ron Artest. All of those men, and possibly Kevin Martin as well, will perform the point guard in name or spirit before he who is hired this week or soon. Geoff Petrie adores flexibility, and due to this fetish interest has assembled a fairly versatile backcourt. The benefit, one which was invisible a season ago, comes in not really needing to find a capable backup point guard. It's a situation much different from, say, the Lakers or the Warriors, both of whom desparately need systemic point guards despite their odd-eyed offensive programs. Sacramento will apparently host a traditional scheme, but thanks to the roster has no need for an Eric Snow or Tyronn Lue. Again, it's a slight benefit... but one nonetheless. (Small victories, friends.)

All said, this dismissal could be of great value to Ronnie Price. He has growth to come, and it would be stunted in a repeated role as occasional murderer of Carlos Boozer. He needs minutes -- real game minutes, not hours driving against Douby in the practice gym -- to hone his NBA point guard skills. He's a guy who can, and should, hang in domestically -- a guy who could, interestingly enough, end up the next Mike Wilks. It's not a terrible existence, hundreds of thousands of dollars to play basketball until you're 30. Moving sucks, and inconsistent job duties suck, too. But it's a job, and for most of us, jobs suck. Waving a towel in the shrinking Arco Arena won't allow that lucrative albeit sucky job to happen; spelling, say, Jameer Nelson or Tony Parker will.

I have not seen Wilks play a whole lot but he does get more playing time than Price and also has Rashard + Ray Allen to pass too so that would help, personally i don't really see a NEED for another PG when you just signed Shakur and you drafted Douby i know they are both unproven but this team does not have a whole lot to play for so might as well just develope those guys and Garcia/Salmons can fillup a lot of the minutes there if DoubyShakur are not ready.

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
Wilks played the same minutes as Price. And I completely forgot about Shakur, as I'm sure Theus will by, say, Veteran's Day.

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
If Wilks isn't that good why pay him a mil to do what you could pay Shakur 500 G's to do?

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
Any stats out there about how much PT Wilks got with Allen and Lewis?  I'm thinking as a back-up point guard he, like Price, probably played with the second team.

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
He was sitting behind Ridnour and Watson, so it had to be mostly garbage time.

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
Petrie:

DON'T DO IT. WHY spend more money? Can't you just save the 2 million or so? Another 13th man PG that is going to sit in street clothes all year is stupid. C'mon. You can ALWAYS get someone out of the D-league to be a backup, backup point if major injuries happen or something. Of course, if you are THAT desperate then you probably won't be contending for a title so why even sign anyone in the first place?

As far as Price, I hope he gets on a team that needs him and can use him. If not, going to the D-League and kicking ass might be good too.

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
I don't mean to spoil the party, but everytime I see people making a judgement simply by comparing stats makes me cringe and most of all upset. Sure numbers are numbers but that's all. They tell you nothing of a person's attitude, personality, teamwork, confidence, ambition  and most of all that 'drive' that makes a great player. I like Price. I like the fact that Musselman allowed him some playing time. Everytime when I see the team struggling and this guy comes in (usually because he's the last reserve) he plays with heart. He drives and attacks without fear. That's what I like in a player. I guarantee you, you have not seen the real Price yet as he is still developing, but he has all the potential to be a solid guard. What a loss!

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
Agreed, but we are talking about a couple of guys that were/are not bound to get significant tick in a Kings uniform this year.
I will miss Ronnie Price. I will miss him more than the Kings. He was fun to watch, brought energy to the floor. But on this team his minutes were to be found behind Bibby, behind Garcia, behind Salmons, and maybe behind Douby. He will be a greater gain wherever he lands than he is a loss to us.

you wouldn't happen to be ronnie price's agent?
Whether your dominating the playground, the last one to leave the gym, or your big time like Mike Bibby...

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
For what it's worth, this is the scouting report for  Mike Wilks on hoopshype.com: "A prep star... Has great quickness... Good defender on the ball... Very good attitude... Size hurts him."

Not sure how accurate this is, because the first line of the scouting report for Brad Miller says:"One of the best centers in the league" Hahahahahaha. In their defense, they didn't specify what league they were talking about.

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
Just goes to show how bad the talent at the center position has gotten in the NBA over the past few years. Still, a couple of years ago Brad was one of the best centers in the league - when he played with Webb, Peja, Doug, and Mike.

Yup, he was shaq's replacement for the all star game. He was tough back then, shaq almost knocked him out when he was still a bull

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
The team we should be talking to is Houston.  With the signing of Steve Francis, they now have Francis, Rafer Alston, Mike James, Luther Head, and John Lucas III, and they also drafted Aaron Brooks.  They can't possibly need that many point guards.  However, they do need veteran PF/C's - once you get past Ming and Mutumbo, all they have is Jackie Butler and Jake Tskalidis.  A Shareef or a Miller would actually have some value to that team.  Also, considering that Bonzi and Adelman are both with the Rockets now, isn't Houston a conceivable destination for Ron-Ron, who always liked the cut of their jib?  Am I crazy here?  Someone wake up Petrie from his nap and tell him it's ok to make calls as well as receive them.

Of course, if David Stern is Commissioner of the NBA next year in light of the referee scandal, the sport is doomed to hell, so none of this may matter anyway.

Freakin' Kings.

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
I agree but I would say no to Alston, I'd rather have head. Hopefully, they might want Kenny back (wishful thinking)

Re: The Search For Mike Bibby's Towel Boy
The Rockets like Head as he really is their best outside shooter. He will not be dealt. Quite frankly, John Lucas III is not very good and we can have him for free if we want. He probably will be in the D-League again, if not potentially relased. Rafer would be a real quality backup, but at this point he costs too much for what he can bring to the table. Steve Francis is done.

In the end, while the Rockets are gaurd heavy, they really don't have a dearth of "quality" guards. I say roll with what we have and see what flies and what doesn't.

Which begs the question, would you rather have a good Pooh or a little 2nd hand Head?
