Just Another Kings Fan
(Ladies and gentlemen, louismg and I have a new contributing friend, who will be posting dispatches from years past as well as life right now from Section #214. Without further adieu, section214. -TZ)
TZ asked me if I would explain why I became a Kings fan. This is a lot like asking a person why they have webbed feet, or why their left eye constantly looks at their right eye, or why a person thinks the slogan "Try our thick creamy shakes!" is always clever and appropriate - Welcome to Sacramento; Try our thick creamy shakes!
I saw a lot of games in the old arena, but I began sharing season tickets the first year of the present ARCO. Joe Kleine was entering his third season and was due to have a breakout year. He was coming off an 8 pt., 6 reb. year, and added 30 big blocks (Joe was a believer in quality over quantity). My fellow ticket holders in section 215 (I did not become section214 until years later) decided that we would hoist our beverage every time Joe did something good, yell "Joooooe!!!" and take a big swig. Halfway through the season we realized that Joe was keeping us way too sober, the Kings were losing way too much, and Magic and Bird only came to town a few times a year, so we adapted the rules. Whenever Joe did anything we would drink. Joe throws an in bounds pass - "JOOOOOE!!!" Joe takes off his warm ups without falling down - "JOOOOOE!!!" The seeds were sewn and the roots began to take hold. This was my team and would be for life. You had me at Joe Kleine. Scwarzenegger & Ventura in '08; Try our thick creamy shakes!
The Kings are my vice. I obsess over them, and now in all of you I have found a group of people that share/suffer/revel in that same passion. A group of webbed footed, cross eyed, wonderfully obsessed people. Thanks for showing your true colors, for letting me know that it's alright to obsess. SACTOWN ROYALTY; Try our thick creamy shakes!

Re: Just Another Kings Fan
That about sums it up nicely. That's exactly the way I feel. It's too bad there aren't more of us. Unfortunately, I don't get out to many games at Arco anyomore but the last couple times I've gone I've been dissapointed. I see so many people talking on cell phones, chatting it up with their business partner while a great play is being made not even looking at the court! It's frustrating. I miss that atmosphere of the early days. Fans like you Section are what it's all about to me. If only we could all get season tickets. I can't afford them. Maybe someday I can have thick creamy shakes 41 times a year!

Does everyone else believe Bobby would've carried us to the promise land had it not been for his horrificly bad luck? I know I still do, I wonder what that guy is doing these days.

Re: Just Another Kings Fan
I was 9 when the Kings came to town, and my first Kings-related memory is of LaSalle Thompson coming to visit the elementary school where my grandmother was principal before the season started. I remember seeing a few games at the old Arco, but my first vivid memories are of Wayman Tisdale, especially the way he would score 12 points in the first quarter on a series of 15-foot jumpers, then do nothing for the rest of the game. It was like rooting for the Rivercats for the next few years, and I still considered myself first and foremost a Celtics fan. But when we got Mitch Richmond, it was like getting a legitimate NBA player, and my interst took off from there. Soon enough, all my previous allegiances to the Celtics and Warriors faded away.

Re: Just Another Kings Fan
(Side note: before the Mavs game at ARCO in April this season, Kenny Thomas was the lone King warming up for about 10 minutes. [Francisco had just gone into the locker room.] My wife and I kept tally. Verdict: he shot something like 4-35. All foul-line in, with a couple of those makes layups. $8 million well spent, says I.)
