NY Post: Knicks Summer League Team an 'Audition for Petrie'

Always fun to hear something like this:

Six Knicks prospects will be on display in the Las Vegas summer league beginning Monday, in what could be an audition for Sacramento GM Geoff Petrie.

Marc Berman goes on talk about possible combinations. He mentions Jared Jeffries. After Petrie's recent comments, I have to gather there is zero chance of him taking back Jeffries.

Also, based on the article, it appears Nate Robinson is in danger of being cut from the team outright.

Lee & Co.
If you include the Knicks two draft picks they have 17 players under contract, which I believe is two over the maximum. If the Knicks sent Lee and (say) Rose for Artest and then dealt Robinson somewhere, even for a second round pick, they would get down to their 15 players. Of course they could also do that by sending us Lee/Dickau/Jones. I mention this because it shows that the Knicks do need to do something this summer. I guess they could always just buy Dickau and Jones out and eat the $6.1 million.
I can't even fathom the Kings doing the deal with the Knicks if it does not include Lee.

Re: NY Post: Knicks Summer League Team an 'Auditio
I just think the big thing about Dickau/Jones is that they represent cap space which will do nothing for the Knicks but alot for the Kings. I'd be shocked if Isiah waves either just because he can offer both in a single deal. 6 million dollars of cap room ain't all that much but if you're getting David Lee for Ron Artest but Ron Artest only makes 7.9 million dollars too. You gotta take what you can get. I would be shocked if they didn't have a deal in place already and Zeke is stalling on Lee for obvious reasons.

Re: NY Post: Knicks Summer League Team an 'Auditio
This is truly a chess match. I don't believe the deal happens without Lee but maybe Isiah thinks he can send out crap to the media like Artest is going opt out next summer anyway and then the Knicks can get him for nothing(which is totally rediculous, Artest will not sign for the MLE and the Knicks are way over the cap). While all this is happening Petrie continues to float rumors about a possible Hedo deal.

I think Isiah will give up Lee but he wants the Kings to take the worst possible player along with Lee. I'm sure it started with Jerome James and it has moved to Jeffries or Rose and Petrie is holding out for Dikau and Jones for instant cap relief next year, a back-up point and a back-up 2 for this season. Petrie might even be willing to toss in Douby so he can go home to NY also especially if it could land Morris in the deal.

We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Very good point about the cap and the MLE JJ.  Not sure I like the idea about giving up on Douby though.

Re: NY Post: Knicks Summer League Team an 'Auditio
The knicks if they want Artest long term should probably try to get him this summer. That way signing him next off-season would be easier. That would be one hellaciously funny front line to watch with Artest Randolph and Curry too. When is Artest going to get a chance to score? LOL!!!

As far as Douby goes I doubt Petrie will throw him in so quickly. Artest already makes a million more than Lee,Jones and Dickau would make combined. Plus, Berman made an excellent point today that if you trade Jones/Dickau again as a combo you have to wait 60 days. So at a minimum they couldn't trade them before August 28/29th something like that.

Just thought I should throw that out there because this gives Zeke/Petrie more time to bullshit and duke it out before that 60 days is up. I would be shocked if Petrie doesn't have Jones/Dickau as his target and that Zeke hasn't already agreed in principle to do the deal with those 2 included. The question is will he continue to balk on Lee or not. We will know the answer to that question in the upcoming weeks.

Post v. Times
Well, this is interesting: You have the Post reporter saying for days now that the Knicks want Artest - indeed calling the acquisition one the team's "summer goals."  Alternatively, the Times writer says the Knicks are not interested in Artest and, in fact, could have had him in the past but chose to pass.

I know we'd all like the Post guy to be right because Lee is the current toast of the town; but, it sure seems strange that two reporters could have such a huge difference of opinion.

Who is the better source of information on the NBA and the Knicks?

Re: Post v. Times
If the Post guy is Howard Beck than Beck is probably got a better reputation stemming from his days covering your beloved LA Lakers Kusian. That being said though, both could still be right. In the past maybe the Knicks were wary but maybe the ownership is not anymore. Maybe Zeke will convince them losing David Lee won't be that big of a deal (I dont think it will be personally).

Artest for Lee
I like Douby's upside OK, but I don't think I'd let that be a deal-breaker if it meant bringing in Lee and getting quick cap relief.

This rumoreed deal actually makes sense for both teams, and while losing David Lee might not hurt the Knicks too much, adding him sure would boost the KIngs frontcourt in terms of rebounding, athleticism and hustle.

Hedo trade
I think Petrie is playing his cards close to his chest by floating rumors about Hedo in order to maximize his deal with the Knicks. Isiah aready lost Rashard Lewis to Orlando, the last thing he would want now is to lose another trade propoect to the same team. If Petrie keeps the rumor alive it puts greater pressure on Isiah. This is a smart move by Petrie.

Re: Hedo trade
I always liked Hedo... His game wasn't fully developed when he was here, and maybe it never really will be, but he's a fun player to watch.

Re: Hedo trade
Hedo is a nice all-around player - not great at any one thing but good at nearly everything. He's a nice complimentary piece. I always thought his defense was underrated while he was with us. (With that said, somebody mentioned the other day on this site - sorry for not giving specific credit - that his defense was suspect this past year.)
