Kevin Martin Signs Five-Year Extension!

It is official without being official. Sam Amick from The Bee reports Kevin Martin agreed to the rumored five-year, $55 million extension late last night. There's nothing out of the Kings media office yet, but Amick seems certain about this.

Martin's locked up through 2013. His salary structure should look something like this:

2007-08   $1.8m
2008-09   $9.0m
2009-10  $10.1m
2010-11  $10.9m
2011-12  $12.2m
2012-13  $13.1m

Based on how most of these contracts go, he'd be eligible to extend his deal during the summer of 2011. (See: Paul Pierce, Dirk Nowitzki.) Such an extension would take us through 2017, the season in which Martin turns 34. But that's a long way from now, isn't it?

The Kings now have $74.1 million locked up in 2008-09, which will be something like $4 million over the luxury tax threshold. Adding a lottery pick's rookie scale contract adds another $2 million. This assumes Mike Bibby doesn't opt out, Ron Artest picks up his option to stay, and (gulp) Kenny Thomas doesn't opt out. If those things happen (and no free agents sign/trades happen), the Maloofs will be shelling out roughly $82 million in player payroll (including the luxury tax) in 2008-09. (This would be why moving Bibby is kind-of a priority. He makes $14.5 million that year.)

Thankfully, the cap number stays the same this year, so the panic cap-cutting can take place over a full a year and a half.

No matter -- leave the financial worries to the Maloof family accountant. We've got lots more Kevin Martin for a long time. Anyone mad about that? Didn't think so.

Still gives me goosebumps.

Re: Kevin Martin Signs Five-Year Extension!
I'm happy for Kevin for getting the deal he obviously deserved. I have a slight reservation that the Kings may have overpaid a little bit. Hopefully Kevin Martin shows his 20+ ppg. was no fluke and he plays extremely well next year and also god-forbid stay injury free.
Time to blow 'em up, boyz.

I mean this in the best way possible
But could the announcer for that game have been any more boring? One of the greatest finishes in playoff history and there's absolutely no excitement in his voice at all.  I mean, I'm not expecting Gus Johnson or anything, but give me something.

Yeah, the local announcer (Grant Napear) had a fantastic call on it... but the video available with that call is pretty grainy.

Re: Kevin Martin Signs Five-Year Extension!
Anybody still think not shedding salary won't make a difference this offseason now?

As far as Martin on the Poll I voted overpaid. He was overpaid but who knows maybe he'll be better than that. Here's hoping so. I'm also saddened the deal wasn't backloaded but that's whatever.

Re: Kevin Martin Signs Five-Year Extension!
I'm happy for Kevin Martin, and I don't see how the team had any choice but to extend him.  What are they going to do, let him walk?  This is the best news so far this offseason.

Those cap and luxury tax numbers are the second best thing I've heard this offseason.  If Petrie has crazy delusions that this team can win, at least the luxury tax issue may force him to make changes.

Good post.

Re: Kevin Martin Signs Five-Year Extension!
While the contract is just this side of palatable, I believe we did overpay for K-Mart.  I am still not convinced he isn't the next Jerry Stackhouse or even...SHUDDER...Peja Stojakovic.  The last two months or so of the season were very Peja-like for Martin - displays of talent, but mostly feckless and uninspiring.  I know that everyone would love to blame Musselman for that, but didn't we use to blame Peja's lack of passion on Adelman?  Turns out he just had a lack of passion.
Freakin' Kings.

Re: Kevin Martin Signs Five-Year Extension!
I feel it was a good signing.  Slightly overpaid possibly but judging by league wide salaries it seems reasonable.  Better than letting him out on the open market.

As for the video I loved when Kmart says that was only a starting point.  Whether he was just talking about the series or his career, he realizes there is a lot of improvement opportunities ahead.  Lets hope he takes them.

Man watching that video really gives me false hopes for the season, praying that we can go back to the team that surged their way into the playoffs on momentum and energy.

yea I know I'm dreaming.

trade em all

Petrie must have been intimidated by Martin's new guns (where's that picture of brandon roy and k mart kicking it).
