Ric Bucher is Spreading More Artest-Knicks Rumors

(From the diaries. Bucher still thinks Kobe's getting traded, so pound of salt mates. - TZ)

Well, like a creature that just won't die, the Artest to NY rumors appear to be back....at least according to ESPN's Ric Bucher. These are questions from his Friday chat session.

Cory (North Dakota): Rick, The internet is buzzing with a rumor that claims you said Artest going to New York. Any truth to the rumor?

Ric Bucher: (3:11 PM ET ) Good to know the Homeboy radio program by Roger B. Brown in Dallas gets that much attention. I spoke with Roger yesterday and said that I'd heard a rumor that a Artest deal was in the making, but the terms I'd heard didn't work under the cap. That said, Artest would love to be in New York, Sacramento would love to move him and the Knicks would love to have him. When you have three parties who want something, I have to believe -- much like the Minny/Boston/KG situation -- it's going to get done.

And then the follow-up question... Anthony, NYC: You said you heard about terms of the proposed Artest to NY deal (eventhough they didnt work under the cap)... care to share some details? Is Isiah true to his word that Lee/Balkman are off limits for Artest?

Ric Bucher: (3:41 PM ET ) a first-round pick, Nate Robinson and either David Lee or Balkman. They'd have to include Malik Rose to make the numbers work and Sac only wants expiring contracts. Hence the problem.

I don't know about you guys, but I could do without Nate Robinson and Malik Rose. I have problems with Robinson's maturity and shot selection. Still, if that nets us a 1st round pick and Lee/Balkman, I would have Artest on the first bus out of town.

I agree completely. Obviously, I think we'd all like to have Lee instead of Balkman, but if you have the #1 coming along with it, that's a pretty nice deal.

Re: It's Back...
I like this deal a lot if it's David Lee. Rose's contract expires next year, so he would actually become a valuable trade piece as an expiring contract in any deals made next summer. Plus he still comes off the books a year before the contracts of Miller, 'Reef and K9 (woof!) expire. The Kings would hold the option on the other players mentioned. This would give the Kings eight guys up front, so you would think that there would have to be other deals on the horizon. After all of that is said, we are talking about Ric Bucher here, so...

Re: It's Back...
Oh, and I would make the deal with Balkman instead of Lee as well. I do like Lee more.

Re: It's Back...
I haven't seen enough of Balkman to know the answer to this, but does he have the skill set to play the 3?  Sort of like a poorer shooting artest.

Re: It's Back...
Painting with a broad brush I would compare him to when Gerald Wallace first entered the league. Very athletic, very raw offensively. If Kings made the deal for Balkman you would figure that Garcia or Salmons would start at the three.

Re: Ric Bucher is Spreading More Artest-Knicks
Just to reiterate: Bucher has, like, zero credibility with me.

Bucher also said the Heat are "killing themselves trying to get Artest." I'm going back to ignoring him now. Sorry.

Re: Ric Bucher is Spreading More Artest-Knicks\
He also has a ridiculous article up at ESPN that seems to defend the performance of the current crop of NBA referees.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=bucherrefs

According to Bucher, the general consensus of NBA referees is that Donaghy was an isolated case, and having reviewed tapes of Donaghy's games, they see no evidence of impropriety. Plus, it's difficult to change the outcome of a game with a 3-man crew! Maybe Rick should read his own website occasionally:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=expertstatsdonaghy

Uh, Rick? Why in the world would you expect the current crop of referees to do anything but say it's an isolated occurrence? These guys are in survival mode, so they aren't impartial. The article indicates how unhappy the current crop of referees are, so I don't think it's such a stretch that improprieties could occur.

Re: Ric Bucher is Spreading More Artest-Knicks\
And just listened to him on ESPN radio. He's going on about how NBA officials (who allegedly make between 100k and 500k) are underpaid compared to NFL and MLB officials, when you take into consideration the amount of calls they have to make per game, the travel involved, and that the NBA basically has a microscope up their asses right now.

This may all well be true. But how does this not coincide with the idea that there are more officials possibly on the take? In most work environments, the employees who feel they are undervalued and disrespected by their employers are the most likely to try to cause harm to their company.

And sorry for the digression, but when the subject gets to this hack, I get slightly agitated.

Re: Ric Bucher is Spreading More Artest-Knicks Rum
And he threw the proverbial "I don't believe in stats" crap.

Harry, Milwaukee: Robert Horry. 7 rings. HOF?

SportsNation Ric Bucher: He would get my vote, because he was a vital part in winning all seven rings. If there's an all-time most valuable role player, award, he gets it. But anyone who looks at his stats would think HOF is a crazy notion. That's one reason I don't put a whole lot of stock in stats.

This is like a writer saying "I don't believe in secondary sources" when writing his honors thesis.

Re: Ric Bucher is Spreading More Artest-Knicks Rum
The deal works with Lee and Balkman or Rose and no Robinson.  If we get Rose, we could literally have every old, non-athletic, undersized power forward in the NBA.  But hey, if rids us of Artest...

Re: Ric Bucher is Spreading More Artest-Knicks Rum
Man that was an ugly sentence.  What I meant to say is that it works with Rose and either Lee or Balkman.  There's no reason to include Robinson.

No reason
No reason for us to include Robinson, but the Knicks might need to include him to get down to 15 players on the payroll.

Re: Ric Bucher is Spreading More Artest-Knicks Rum
I called this in the Garnett trade diary. Isiah Thomas is desperate to be the darling of the NBA and Danny Ainge just went and stole his buzzzzzz. This is exactly why I'm glad the Kings have Petrie, he almost always waits these things out and gets what he wants. I've been as hard on Petrie as anyone, particularly after the Mikki Moore signing.

I think that the mid-level exemption has become a major problem in the NBA and that Petrie has fallen a victim to its charm. You can't get better signing 5 million a year guys. Lets hope that Petrie's patience pays off in this deal and he makes up for the abysmal off season that has unfolded.

Maybe he will even throw us a bone and buy out K-9.

We are slipping into the NBA abyss.
