GAME 34 vs Memphis, Preview & Game Thread

I traded insight with the fellows from 3 Shades of Blue. My request was an assessment of Mike Conley's early performance running the show. Here's ChipC3's take:

Derek Fisher went off for 26 points including 5-5 from the arc and held Conley to 5-15 shooting while daring him to hit the outside shot by dropping 5-10 ft off of Conley and looking to steal any inbound passes. Welcome to the NBA Mr. Conley.

There were bright spots however. Derek Fisher isn't going to be that hot nor is any point guard in the NBA on a nightly business. When Conley did take the ball to the rack he made some nice plays in cluding a Nash-like run through the lane turn and head back out only to shoot a no look pass to Darko for a dunk as the defense moved up to stay with Conley. Mike still needs to develop the outside shot so teams respect that and play a little more under control at times but all in all not a bad game for the 20 yr old's fourth start.

Basically Conley is going to shock teams at first with his speed and pass first mentality but he still needs work on slowing the game down in his head, how to defend different people and gain confidence in his shot. He's a couple of years away from being very good and probably 5 years away from being great and that is only if he continues to work on his game but he seems very mature and isn't rattled easily. I think he will be great one day along the lines of a Parker ( but not so much a scorer) or Nash ( but not quite so intuitive a passer). While being a little different than both players he may one day belong in this company when talking about pure point guards.

Beno Udrih isn't a quick mover side-to-side, and Conley should be able to burn him a few times. With the lack of a shotblocker 39 minutes a night (what up, 3-Wil!) there really is no disincentive to penetrate, penetrate, penetrate when you're facing the Kings. That said, Sacramento's swings and bigs have played the passing lanes very well the past week; the number of easy steals has been a bit outrageous, but it might say more about the carelessness of the opponents rather than some brilliant line of communication between Brad Miller and John Salmons.

Pau Gasol can score in the post any time he wants against this team. Here's to hoping he doesn't want to score in the post. Rudy Gay poses another set of problems, and Mike Miller can shoot from section214's seats.

No brainer pick...

The Kings have won 21 straight against the Grizzlies at ARCO. The Kings are coming off what I feel is the win of the year against the Orlando Magic.

The Kings continue to be feisty even if games are too close for comfort. I see the Kings playing a good game tonight and grabbing the win.

It also helps when the Kings are 1-0 when I put on the 4XL Kevin Martin Home White Jersey.

I'm not going to call guaranteed win night but I do think we have an excellent shot. The Grizzlies are a poor defensive team and Salmons, Garcia and Udrih could have field day against them.

I don't care if we've beaten the Griz

at Arco 3,000 times in a row, it really means nothing.

Take the Clippers game back in December at Arco for example. We usually dominate the Clippers at home, but we managed to lose to them by 10 points. And it wasn't even that close. I thought for sure that was an automatic win.

Well... in tonight's game.

He's at 6 minutes, according to Yahoo!. I said 8 minutes. I was thinking 8 x 6 and messing it up. 8 x +5=+40. Give him 8 minutes on the bench to rest, and you still win by 35, minus 5 points for the other team to come back, and you win by 30.

I never thought I'd say this but the Kings without Artest, Bibby, SAR and even Martin (let's include Kmart in the list) actually look pretty decent.They blew out the Knicks for crying out loud.

I just wanna know what you guys think about this - does Minny's future look better than ours? I think I'm leaning towards the Kings on this one

Battier is probably a better fit becuz what Gay and McGrady do well would be sort of redundant. Given Gay and McGrady's status whom do you think would get the ball if both are in the game. That's the long answer.

The short answer is you need stars and guys who allow your stars to be that. Battier is one of the latter.

Embarrasing Loss?

There is no embarrassing loss for theses Kings especially without Artest, Martin or Bibby. The Kings are playing with a skeleton roster and I do agree they're overachieving every way possible. Brad is having a resurgent year, John Salmons is playing way out of his mind, Francisco has grown up, Q is showing some flashes of potential.

The only thing that's embarrassing for these Kings would be coming out with absolutely no effort and getting their asses handed to them. That hasn't happened this year. The Kings have played hard every moment. I can live with losses even those excruciating ones down the stretch because, they're young, thrown into the fire and quite frankly they've responded in a way beyond anyone's wildest dreams.

That's the most my adrenaline has been going in a Kings game in a long time... 'bout freaking time things go the right way. Now we're 5-8 in games decided by 5 points or less? What a game.

It was a fun game to watch. That first quarter was just incredible to watch. Best quarter of Kings hoop I've seen in some time.

so, I was at the Kings game

I snuck down to the lower half for the entire second half. Great game. I felt like I was in Arco in the 90s, it rocked.

I also did the greatest thing ever. I talked to Jim Kozimor after the game. And he basically confirmed that Grant's nickname really is Peaches.

I asked him straight up if Grant's nickname was Peaches and he looked surprised then started laughing. I tokld him "That's a yes" and he laughed more and waved and went and did House Party. I'm so glad. Thanks Koz.

for fouling out. We needed the win.

I also liked Justin Williams' 19-second cameo, which was enough to pick up a foul and look totally lost while moving into John Salmon's dribble to set a screen and creating a turnover. I guess Reggie had a short hook tonight.

I thought this was going to turn out like the Clippers game: follow up a win in a game you should lose with a loss in a game you should win. It was nice to see the Kings bag one in the closing seconds for a change. Maybe that's an omen for good things to come.

It was also nice to see multiple options on the play that led to Cisco's three, although Salmons almost coughed up the rock.

All in all, great stuff.
