GAME 36 vs Dallas, Preview & Game Thread

Every time our heroes match up across those Mavericks in blue, I remember the night Chris Webber died. There have been infinite moments since which would require remembrance, but they all seem meaningless in comparison. Kevin Martin could cap off a quadruple-double night with a game-winning alley-oop to Justin Williams and I'm not sure the image'd permanently replace the visage of a crumpled Titan melting our reign of glory as the best fans of the best team. Until (I am guessing) a parade with a moonwalking Gavin Maloof occurs, I'm afraid this pall will remain. Like Len Bias in Boston or RFK in 1968, but perhaps with slightly less relevance, it is our sorrow.

Dallas is a pace-control team, perhaps moreso than San Antonio. It's odd, because Devin Harris and Dirk Nowitzki can play fast; it's brilliant with Dirk in the game, though, because you cannot gimmick he and Josh Howard into bad shots. They are too good.

The Dallas defense has fallen off demonstrably, though its pillars have begun to return. The understanding Kevin Martin will again come off the bench is intriguing if only because it assures Martin should get some minutes without Howard crowding his junk; barring a Trenton Hassell exposure, Martin should be able to get at alternate incarnations of Jerry Stackhouse and Jason Terry. It's worth noting it'd be beyond useful to have Mike Bibby available tonight (he'd shoot over Harris for hours) while Ron Artest might not help much (being that gameplan would concentrate on slashing the paint to death instead of begging for double-downs and kickouts).

Beno Udrih's the odd factor here. Sacramento desparately needs a solid outing to make a dent; Dallas defends Brad Miller well, Francisco Garcia isn't best in staid halfcourt affairs. I hope to be wrong, and I often am. But Beno's success cannot hurt nevertheless.

Wasn't the Chalupa Squad a year or two before the Bench Mob? Or did I transpose and compress a few years there?

Chalupas are a waaay better idea than showing the game on the side of ARCO and might cost less. I hope Gavin reads StR.

I love this blog, in no small part because it is one of the few places you'll see defense described as a "staid half court affair." Hello everybody!

I just wanted to introduce myself. I have been a Sactown Royalty follower for almost three years now, checking the homepage several times a day, and following the game threads during most games. I am pretty sure I put a massive dent in those 1,000,000 hits. TZ, you do a great job.

A quick bio for anyone who cares about my fanhood. I have been a Kings fan ever since my sisters boyrfriend dragged me to a home game in '96 (15 years at the time). I followed closely from the start, them obsessively since Webber re-signed. A job aftger college moved me to Orange County, where I am surrounded by the most pathetic fans in the world. not just Laker fans, fair-weather OC Laker fans. I cannot begin to describe.

Lastly, I am sure you all know where my username comes from. I don't want to talk about it, but it will never go away.

Thanks for listening (or more likely skimming) my first post. Lets hope a big night from Kevin, some real minutes for 3-Wil, and DNP for K9(woof!)

Who would have though we'd only be down by 2? Dirk has yet to miss but he had a quiet 1st half (only 8 points/1 reb/1 ast). However, DAL guards are torching us (Harris with 11 and Terry with 12). Dallas has out rebounded us 23-15 and is shooting 54.8% from the field but what's keeping us in the game is their 11 turnovers (as opposed to our 5)

Kevin plays an amazing half; the Kings play a good half. And we are still down. Thank God for the Dallas TOs and Dirk's quiet half.

Is not reasonable to expect Martin to keep up this pace. He's bound to get tired in the 4th. We've got to step up the D, (which has been terrible...again) and somebody else has to help with the scoring load besides the Cisco kid.

If we are going to play crappy team D with or without Kevin starting there is really no good reason not to start him with the way he is shooting. I still like how Reggie is watching his minutes, though. He legs looked tired at the end of the last game.

He deserves to be a starter in this league. Then again, so does Ginobili and he figured it out.

If the Kings are going to keep Artest they need to get value for Salmons. If they are going to deal Artest then Salmons is the starter.

It's true

Ginobli does get starters minutes as a sixth man, and it's nice to have scoring pop come in off the bench. I think he's ok with that role now, but he complained quite a bit when he was first moved there.

As for Martin off the bench, I don't really see a reason for it. After he gets back in game shape, Garcia will be fine coming off the bench. He's shown he can produce in that role. Start Artest at the 4, and it's all good. If Ron-Ron complains, give him a choice. Start at the 4 or come off the bench.

But it takes a certain type of player that can come in cold off the bench and produce. Salmons has been much more effective as a starter this year, I'm not sure he's that type of player. Now Garcia has shown that he can be effective off the bench.

Martin off the bench?

What do you guys think about bringing Martin in off the bench. He's earned that starting spot, but he could bring a lot of energy if he's playing as a sixth man. Starting Bibby and Salmons in back, and bringing in Beno and Martin could be pretty kickass. Bibby, Artest, Salmons and Miller can all score with Miller running the point. Bring in the backup squad where Beno can facilitate and make those sweet passes to Martin. Just a thought...

Very true. We could actually be dangerous when healthy. Theus just has to get everyone to buy into it. If he makes Beno our JET and Salmons our Ginobli (okay, not quite as talented) it'd be awesome. But, Reggie has to get them to believe that being the stars off the bench is just as important as starting.

Where do I print out my ticket?

Never mind, I have a hate/hate relationship with Taco Bell dating back several decades to a single food poisoning incident in another city.

Suffice it to say, I've donated many ticket stubs to others who are inclined to eat there.

Once a Supreme Burrito refuses to stay where it should, you'll never ever ever ever have a craving for another one.

Disclaimer: I've never gotten sick at a Sacto area Taco Bell and nobody I've ever given a chalupa worthy stub to has gotten sick either...but, damn...details deleted.

Double Chalupas for everyone! I still think this would be a fun throw back promo for the Kings, I know lots of people who would enjoy it. Nobody I ever gave one to turned it down.

Unless Kings fans can come up with something better (and realistic) they'd like to see the team give away for a win or 100+ points?

Seems like the team marketing department needs more input (exception: open practice. Brilliant!).

Killed by an untimely video on hot dog making viewed in Junior High. (I HATE you, PETA.)

So, maybe double tri-tip? With better rolls? Mmmm. Mmmm. Mmmm.

Come to a game where the Kings score at least 100+ points and (if you come again this year) you score a free tri-tip sandwich (and maybe a beer)? Hot damn. Awesome.

I'm not sure that would get me to buy another couple of single game tickets but it might stem the tide of the season ticket bail outs.

For the record, I love every other kind of sausage I've ever tried (get your minds out of the gutter). I just have the same aversion to anything hot dog related that I do supreme burritos. Stupid, I know.

I am wracking my brain though to try to come up with some fun/funny/clever and/or profitable promos for the Kings that involve food like they had back in the day.

Other than the Martin's Morton's (not good), I am without inspiration. I need to spend more time thinking and less time typing.

Please, tell me that some other Kings fans have some ideas that work better than mine do?

I loved the Chalupas Squad and meant no disrepect to the owners of the local franchises. It really was a fun promo...

Free fast food was probably a lot more fun when your tickets only cost $25(or less) in the lower level of the old barn.

I guess you'd need Martin's Morton's today to generate the same level of excitement.
