Why Would Zeke Want Bibby?

Isiah Thomas wants to enter the Mike Bibby sweepstakes? Who am I to argue?

It makes no sense to add a poor defending, high salary offensive player to that catastrophe. But if Bibby's the man who unlocks David Lee's shackles, so be it.

I can't come up with any two-team trade that's sane, unless Geoff Petrie decides packaging both Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Kenny Thomas with Bibby to get Lee and Stephon Marbury's fat 2009 expiring contract (with Fred Jones to fill it out) is a good idea. It would bring the full rebuild to a head sometime around the next trade deadline, were it to occur, speeding things up by one year. I assume there are better deals out there.

Do we need to start the Ron Artest Facts again?
Perhaps with Bibby?

Mike Bibby does not roll with a posse.  Mike Bibby IS the posse.

Mike Bibby does not miss shots.  He only gives the other team hope for his amusement.

We are only alive because Mike Bibby told Team Dime to let us all live.

Mike Bibby's minifro is better than yours.  Its fact.

I need this to happen
The fun involving interns, trucks, players and Team Dime would make my head explode.

That trade doesnt sound to bad.
The oppertunity package Bibby with SAR and K9's contracts sounds good to me.  What would we rather have, the most over-paid backup PG in the league (Starbury), or Bibby two hydra heads?
Wait....Why is everybody clapping? Everyone around me is clapping.... I guess I should be clapping too... GO LAKERS!!! I hate living in So Cal

I agree. Better how?
We'd get out of the final year of BOTH of the terrible Hydra deals, get the coveted "David Lee", and still have Artest (to trade, to sign, to sign & trade, or -worst case- just for the extra cap relief).

If anyone is trying to tell me that they wouldn't roll SAR & K9's contracts into an extra $7M on Bibby's contract next year, they're either hopelessly optimistic or a liar (or both).

Seriously, that deal effectively relieves the team of BOTH years of SAR's deal and the final year of K9's deal.  That's more than $21M in savings!

Oh, I forgot to mention (again), we would also get DAVID LEE.

This trade is not only better for the future, it's better for the present as well:

  • David Lee > SAR+K9
  • $0M > -$21M
  • Bibby ?? Marbury

Even if Marbury is a downgrade from Bibby it's still a net gain.

by smgmatt on Jan 16, 2008 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

Even More Incentive
If you make the deal involving Marbury you probably don't have to worry about him until he becomes a potentially tradeable expiring contract, per the attached article.

I think that means NY won't bother to trade him
Especially since his deal is coming off and will net them serious relief.

I would agree, but
1) There is the lust factor for Artest.

-And-

2) Zeke is an idiot.

However, pookey, if we're talking about a person of normal intelligence making a normal decision, I agree with you 100%.

Zeke's idiocy isn't in doubt here Section
My point is that Glen Grunwald, the assistant GM to Isiah, isn't an idiot and knows that if Marbury is out for the rest of the season it may just enable ownership to do what is necessary to take this team in the right direction. My point is simply that Marbury going through surgery is not going to be an active commodity any team is willing to deal for. And since it's very likely that he won't be healthy until AFTER the deadline it kills his value. It's true that no one can under estimate Isiah's retardation, but on the flip side not every other team is willing to trade a guy for cap relief, especially like Sac, when a guy like Artest would be coming off your cap for a combined 2 year cost that's less than what Marbury is making this season. In other words the reason I say it's likely Marbury is going to stay a Knick is because his salary is too big to trade for A) and because it will be too hard to net a serious talent in return B).

Then you have this factor of him not even entering a game in Phoenix. Marbury's time might be limited in New York, but I have a feeling the guy will be bought out after the season ends with the Knicks franchise rather taking in cap relief and leaving his antics behind. It's just a gut feeling, and the only smart play they have at this point.

hold tight.
bibby is gonna come out and play his ass off. he's coming off his worst season yet, and already missed almost half the season. he's been watching his team work hard every night. i have a feeling we're gonna see throwback bibby. just like brad miller. they know they both slacked off, and i think they both realize that they're so much better than what they did last season. i think miller's poor season also contributed to bibby's bad season. bibby does good when he has big men setting him up. miller took last year off, but it's on again. and if you think about it, we haven't really seen this team with throwback brad and artest. let them play several games and see what happens. hopefully we'll get artest and miller finding the many slashers and shooters we have.

I hope zeke doesn't read this part...
But Mike Bibby isn't returning to old Bibby this year. If the NBA, Vince Carter, Jerome James, Tim Thomas, and  Arthur Bonzerelli (Van Gundy version) have taught me anything, it's that Bibby will kick ass next year, not this one. Although if Coach Fuller can make this squad work and still get decent production out of Salmons off the bench, then he deserves Coach of the Year hands down.

Are you kidding
Zeke just read that and made another pass at a female Garden Employee.  He's all about the Contract Year Player.

I'd love him to sign Mike to an $11.6 million extension.  Oh the irony.

TZ nailed it on Fanhouse
David Lee would be awesome, but what about the ever articulate Joakim Noah? As awesome as Shawes' Folsom Lake Ford commercials are, Noah's even goofier looking and played for a team that I hear did pretty good in some March tournament. Although really, I'd just feel bad for Shawes if this happened. Nobody deserves to be banished to the Bulls right now. Except for maybe Mamba.

Call me crazy -
But I think I might like Hawes better than Noah in a couple of years. I do like Noah better today and I would not object if that deal were made.

I'm with you
I'd take Noah just as fast as I'd take Lee, and if there's a team ripe for hosing its the Bulls. I bet you can swing Artest for Noah and Ben Gordon for a half-season. Gordon turned down 5/50m a few months ago, so you know the Bulls want something back before he hits the market. Then Salmons moves into the starting 3 spot. Plus you rent Gordon for 4 months. And imagine the Artest-Ben Wallace train wreck. I think Paxon is stupid enough to do this.

by sonomanate on Jan 16, 2008 2:48 PM PST up reply actions

This is a trade the Bulls wouldn't make...
...but it makes sense from the Kings perspective.  With Gordon, even if you don't plan on re-signing him, you have the same Sign & Trade options that you would have had with Artest (and potentially more suiters), plus you'd get another piece (Noah) out of it in the process.

I don't know where I stand with Hawes (because I haven't seen a lot of him - in college or the NBA), but I think that Noah's not going to improve significantly upon what he can do now.  Even before the draft, I saw him as a role player more than a star.  This is not a knock on him, as every team needs role players, but if Hawes has a chance to become an All-Star center (does he?  I honestly don't know) then I'd think you would want to stick with him in a straight swap situation.

For the record
I oppose the Marbury-Bibby trade because it makes my head hurt... for Knicks fans.

by Tom Ziller on Jan 16, 2008 3:18 PM PST reply actions

OK
Yes that would be a true hosing - maybe unrealistic dreaming on my part.  I still prefer Noah to Hawes, because he's a better athlete, and with Martin (a unique scorer) I assume we won't need scoring from the 5 spot so much as rebounding, defense, and activity.  I like Noah's attitude as well.  The media is treating this as a "rookie doesn't know his place" story, but I can't fault him for taking a stand against typical disinterested NBA jerk-veterans.

Anyways, assuming that doesn't work... then back to the top of the post: Bibby/KT/? for Lee/Marbury.  You plug Marbury into the scoring backup guard role, and then you have the nicest bench in the NBA, 6 through 9: Marbury, Garcia, Salmons, Lee.  And if Marbury doesn't comply, to hell with him.  He's off the books in 18 months.

by sonomanate on Jan 16, 2008 3:39 PM PST reply actions

I don't think its fair
That everyone is riding Noah like he doesn't know better or should shut his mouth.

A majority of the problem in Chi-Town is that they paid Ben Wallace a boatload of cash and he has performed about as well as Dewey Cox on a pcp bender.

If the guys worst problem is that he wantes to win, I'll take him.

by Chris The Greek on Jan 16, 2008 3:59 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe I'll say it again in a few weeks ...
But I've taken back everything bad I've said about Bibby and I feel ashamed of myself for the comments I have made concerning trading him.

For god sakes he hasn't played this season yet... He hasn't played any real games with the line ups Reggie puts on the floor, nor has he played a real game for Reggie.

At least let him get back into game shape, as hastily as possible preferably... then we can start harping about who needs a change of scenery besides K9(Woof!)

Nice articles today (on Chris Webber of course)
I found this post by KD linked to yesterday by Peter Vescey yesterday more truthful and easier to take if I was a Knicks fan.

And I mentioned something like that in May or June about Randolph to the Bucks. I think he's a worthwhile player to take on if what you're giving up is right. And the pieces Vescey mentioned would be at least undestandable. On the flip side Z-Bo is just frustrating as all hell.

by pookeyguru on Jan 16, 2008 4:04 PM PST reply actions

Did I read that right, Pookey?
Are you suggesting that we go after Z-Bo instead of Lee?

If so, a Bibby-Thomas package would work for Z-Bo, Balkman, and Fred Jones . . . which is at least close to what they were trying to get from the Bucks (the big isn't nearly as good, but the guard can play point, and it still gets them out from under Z-Bo's contract).

The problem there is that it gets us UNDER Z-Bo's contract, and that 4th year could be the deal-breaker.

Here's how the money breaks down (roughly), this year being negligible:

  • '08, -$6.5M
  • '09, +$9.5M
  • '10, +$20.2M

If you think Z-Bo (plus Balkman) is worth this, it's not a lot to give up (especially shipping K9 out!), and if you can get Balkman (or a pick) in the process as well, you might just have to pull the trigger on that.  Could set GP's timeline back a year, or change the rules if Z-Bo is one of the missing pieces for this team (which is a HUGE "if").

by smgmatt on Jan 17, 2008 6:51 AM PST up reply actions

No not at all
I just said that deal made more sense of Z bo going to the Bucks than whatever deal the Kings make with the Knicks.
