GAME 37 at Toronto, Preview & Game Thread
Oh crap, East coast game. 4 pm local tip. Aargh.
TORONTO RAPTORS (20-18) 109.4 ORtg (#12), 107.4 DRtg (#14), 88.2 Pace (#27)
BALLHYPE | NBA.com PREVIEW
I suspect Ron Artest will get plenty of work guarding Chris Bosh. And that will be the key, no matter how good Jose Calderon plays. (And he has been playing great.) Bosh has become one of the few offensive forces in the league who can kill you solo; just a devastating arsenal of weapons in his pocket. Scoring ability wise, he's right there with Carmelo Anthony. (In terms of dedication to destruction, Melo wins. In peripheral skills -- passing and rebounding, Bosh is superior.)
On the other end... all eyes on Mike Bibby, right? I'm holding my breath until he sinks a J going left off a reverse screen and leads the break with a pull-up three. I have no doubt he's fully recovered physically; three months, though, is a long time without real game play, especially when you've been playing nonstop with no injuries for about four years. (Don't forget Bibby is typically a slow starter in November.)
Toronto's defense is near the level of Dallas' statistically, but I'm not sure it matters. Since all three Sactown stars will be coming off the bench, added to the Raptors being on the end of a back-to-back... I'm not guessing Anthony Parker's going to be full of piss and vinegar when Kevin Martin comes into the game, you know? I don't know if Bibby or Artest plan on shooting the team to victory or defeat; regardless, this game looks imminently winnable in my estimations.
Go Kings.

Of course, I also see them falling behind by 20 and 3-Will STILL not getting any minutes. Wouldnt it be great to see if he could slow down Bosh?
by 27freethrows on Jan 16, 2008 5:42 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Hows Ronnie playing?
If Reggie wanted size for this game, why hasn't he played any of it? Brad's killing, Mikki's chilling. We need an athletic stopper on Bosh - not slow him down entirely, but to at least limit which moves he can pull out of his arsenal. Our defense isn't winning this game, can we at least get production from the four?
We're down 20, theories why?
We're getting outrebounded, outstolen, outfree-throwed, outturn-overed, outscored.
Damn.

Why is Mikki Moore leading the team in playing tim
Or, to go small, how about this to close out the fourth:
Beno
Bibby
Martin
Salmons
Miller
And we say fk it, let Bosh get his.

Worst part of the night
Theus is really going to have to work on chemistry now that everybody is back. This performance makes moving Bibby/Artest seem more important. At least Mike's shot looks good, so teams will be looking at him.

RIP Playoff Talk
Denver is on a pace to go 49-33...and finish in the 8th spot.
The Kings would have to go 35-10 after tonight to finish better than Denver's projected record, a pace that has been bettered only by Boston so far this year.
Not trying to pee in anyone's Cheerios here but this idea of us making a run now that we're healthy...now, if we were in the Eastern Conference...

as long as we're talking
Is there any we can fleece Sean Williams from the Nets? Because a line-up 2 years from now of:
Beno/Free Agent
Martin/Garcia/Douby
Salmons/Jones/Free Agent
Sean Williams/Justin Williams
Spencer Hawes/Brad Miller as a backup
Is pretty freaking nasty in terms of balanced personnel (assuming the youngn's become what we expect).

It's not an easy thing for a PG. I know. My boy is starting PG on his high school team and he struggles with this part. You have to be able to drive while simultaneously looking to score and also watching for your open team mates. Jason Kidd and Steve Nash are masters.

Thanks
We have a ton of players and they are walking the ball up, crawling it up might be better. Martin looked like his batteries had run out from the first two games. Ron was very rusty and pretty weak on D. Bibby put up some numbers.
Hard to believe they put Jones on inactive. An energy guy for a team that obviously needed a lot more of it tonight.
What an uninspired, go-through-the-motions waste of time.
On a positive note, they are still on a pace to win 46 games if they follow my scenario from the diaries last week. I had this figured as a loss anyway.
by coolcatreportdotcom on Jan 16, 2008 7:36 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Not terribly surprised.
Way to jinx it TZ! Anyway, I'm not surprised that we wound up losing this. I think Theus has done an admirable job with this team this year, but fitting all these pieces together now that he has them was bound to create some confusion on the court.

Brad
I keep wondering, how many opening tips have the Kings won in the last five years? Not this many.
No stats for that, as far as I know, but Miller is giving everything he's got.
Go B-rad. Not that it means much but it does show some hustle.

Bibby/'Reef/K9(woof!)
I agree that he hasn't played up to his contract for several years, but this year? He's a beast.
Or as close to a beast as the Kings are going to see anytime soon.
Would you rather have a guy heading toward the sunset of his career tailing off or a guy who's producing at a higher rate than he has in a two years?
I'm just happy he's producing at the rate he is. Obligatory "Woot" inserted here.

reggie blew it
The gameplan was pathetic. Raps are the best 3pt shooting team in tha nba and he goes out with a zone.
Also, he constantly and too agressively doubles Chris Bosh (who finished 10/11 anyway) which leads to good ball movement and a LOT of open looks for the Raps, and the Kings running like a bunch of headless chickens trying to rotate every time.
He refuses to put Artest on Bosh. Instead, he puts Mikki Mouse on him, whose defense last night was MUCH more pathetic than Bibby's. The only thing Mikki does well on D is yell after opponent's made basket. He does it well enough that you can hear his yelling on TV. Also with Mikki on the floor we play 4 on 5 on offense (kinda like the Bulls with Big Ben) because all the ball movement stops when he gets the ball (if he catches it of course). Apparently he can't both move and think at the same time.
