Forty-one games ago, as Elton Brand wailed in pain and Mike Dunleavy gnashed in unrest, we asked who would finish the season with the better record: Sacramento or the Clippers?

62% picked the Clippers, and this was way, way before the Mike Bibby injury. Yes we are optimists, yes we are biased... but yes, we are (halfway) vindicated.

The Clippers do not score well, second worst points-per-possession rate, behind only those potent SuperSonics (who have a 19-year-old as the offensive centerpiece). Corey Maggette, as we know, can score his ass off. Sam Cassell can drill it, Chris Kaman knows his way around the basket (especially against Brad Miller) and Al Thornton (like Kenny Thomas) can flat-out score. It doesn't add up, though, likely because a) Cassell been injured and minutes-starved, b) Thornton can score only because he takes too many shots, c) Brevin Knight is the anti-A.I.

I appreciate the pass-first point guard as much as anyone, but: You cannot win consistently with a PG who's afraid of shooting the basketball. Look at New Jersey: Jason Kidd's offensive numbers are horrible (horrible!), and NJ often has trouble scoring. Knight's the same thing (without the rebounds and flash) -- he's just not going to shoot. Ever. He makes Orien Greene look like Damon Jones. He's scoring 8.9 points per 40 minutes this year. Comparable: Mikki Moore is scoring 8.2 points per game, in 30 minutes. Mikki Moore gets at most two plays run for him in a normal game. Brevin Knight touches the ball on practically every possession he's in the game. Per-minute, Mikki scores about 30% more than Knight. Chew on it. Work it up real good. (Spit it out, that stuff's nasty.)

The Clips defense has remained surprisingly good -- here's where Knight helps: He's a terrific defender. With Kaman soaking up defensive rebounds and Quinton Ross offering 20 minutes of Hell every night, the #9 defense in the league almost makes sense. The Clips handcuffed Kevin Martin last year -- Speed went for 13 points on .333 FG% in four matches in 2006-07. Ross is a big part of that; also, the Clippers zone (with plenty of away-from-the-basket doubles) spells trouble, since Martin won't ever take a bad shot (which is good for the team and bad for Martin's stats).

If the Sacramento offense clicks like it did last night, it might not be a competitive game. I suppose you have to decide whether Tuesday was a positive aberration or whether it was a true sign of sustainable potential. The Clippers, surprisingly, are a good test.

MoPete is actually

The Hornets are now up by 8 or so. It's late 3rd qtr. David West got hot early; Paul has been instrumental in running the team. Mostly the Blazers started very quickly and has faded since. They seem tired (they're on the end of a 7 game trip).

Interesting,

I'd think MoPete would be a step or two slow to really bother Roy, but then they don't have too many other options (what with Peja doing everything but carrying a red cape into the basketball court and screaming "toro").

I'm going to make a prediction: if the Blazers don't get a high draft pick, they'll be a big player in the garbajosa auction this summer. If they get a monstruous point guard, they'll be a complete team. Though, they have depth at the pg spot to develop a youngn or two, yet. Would be really surprised if Jarrett or Blake aren't moved by the start of next season.

Honestly

He bothered Roy for awhile in certain ways. I really think that the Blazers ran into the case of "too long on the road for too long" troubles. They just had no legs tonight. Everything was short. It was the end of a 7 game trip. (To keep things in perspective Phoenix lost tonight to the Wolves after playing last night in Milwaukee. Part of that was a career night from Al Jefferson and part of that was the fact that the whole Wolves team played well. The NBA is a fickle animal and any given night a guy can beat you. Reputations may seem infallible, but the reality is not always so.

Makes sense

Though, I don't know if you were paying any attention to Lakers-Spurs, but the Spurs went into the thrid quarter down by 9, and finished up by 10 - capped by 6 points and one steal in the final 10 seconds by Brent Barry.

I wasn't hating the lakers

I'm partly a Spurs fan (Tim Duncan being a fellow countryman). The fact that the Lakers specifically are suffering isn't of much concern to me.

Why do I get so many Rant telecasts? I swear David Stern hates me. I'm not Clipper Steve, but Ralph Lawler is an enjoyable voice. Rant these days is, unfortunately, more difficult to swallow. Of course i don't have to listen to his radio show so I suppose that's a bonus.

And it sounds like its a great time to get league pass. Should I? Even if they realistically have little hope to make the playoffs, the excitement seems pretty high. I haven't watched a full game yet this season, but watched almost every game last year. Are they really playing that much better?

Quite frankly

I just saw Bibby miss the shot. I've been turbo flipper (I've watched Grizz-Magic, Raps-C's, Blazers-Hornets, Bulls-Pacers, Nuggs-Hawks, bits & pieces of Suns-Wolves and Mavs-Bobcats. I'm not really watching the game in complete focus.

Believe it or not I want the Kings playing well

This is in part because it will take stock that maybe the Kings have good parts to trade away (like Artest and Bibby) and will be willing to deal. Teams don't always like dealing players from bad situations unless they don't give anything up (like the Sheed to Detroit deal in 04).

Dealing for Corey Maggette will take some work for instance. So would dealing for Sam Cassell. My point is that with less negativity about Bibby flying around there might be less intrepidation about dealing for him. Most teams know he isn't a leader or defender.

I don't think you would see anybody's value rise. Player's pretty much are what they are. Marc Stein maintains that Pau Gasol is probably the biggest name that will be dealt. Why would the Grizz break this up too early considering they have Darko Conley and Gay already also? Plus they could always add say an OJ Mayo too. I just think that the whole anticipation of what & who gets dealt is always too much hype and what not. It's very hard to trade a player like Gasol during the trade deadline. Those deals take too much time & have too many details to complete in such a short amount of time. People forget that all these franchises are doing what they perceive in their best interest. No team wants to give away their "star".

That being said Gasol isn't worth as much as the Grizz think he is. That's true of just about every player short of the name superstars.

But I really wish Kara Lawson did more analysis on Kings games. She was excellent at it, as is Kayte. It only proves that women players care more about the game and have to work at it more I think. Personally I would prefer Kayte to do Sideline anaylsis but I don't want Rant to shriek with fear.

Am I the only person who finds Brad Baby amusing? He starts out at 6'10 and by the time he gets to the basket he manages to shoot like he was 6'1 at the basket. He used us. But as a guy averaging 3.3 rebounds and .3 blocks per game, he wouldn't really solve our problem at the 4. I'm a big FSU guy so I really like Thornton. That's why I'm glad he's not here. He'd likely be stuck behind Ron, John and Francisco.

Hawed Rules

with 5 minutes left in the game, Hawes' 3 fouls stopped LA from easy points and one dunk. At least he was trying. I was hoping Spencer's next foul was an open palmer slap. The Kings don't know how to use the kid and why should they? They have no low post game. Their center is a perimeter player and I cringe when they run plays for Mikki (since you never know when he's going to catch the ball. They'd better start learning to use Hawes or we are going to watch a talented player leave in a year without even seeing everything he can do.

I'll agree with you on this. The book is still out on the kid, he needs at least three years (considering his position) till he can even start proving himself. As a center, he won't start hitting his prime till at least 25, so he's got six years till we can decide whether he'll be an all-star or just a bench-player. So far though, looks like he'll have a place in the league.

They have to use the old cliche and play them one at a time. They aren't good enough to think they can just show up and beat even a crappy NBA team like the Clippers. Like I said, that Jersey game is over and while they played great, you still start the next game at 0-0, and you'd better be ready to bring it.

A game like tonight

definitely doesn't give you the warm fuzzies. I think Reggie should have rolled the dice with Douby and Dahntay a little earlier in the third quarter to see if they could give us some energy, because the guys who played definitely didn't bring any.

On the bright side, we played almost as bad as this against Toronto recently and beat the Pistons on the road in the next game.

Let's hope they can return to their A game, because they can't afford many mulligans at this point.

Scoreboard watching: Lakers lost, Portland lost and Houston barely squeaked by the Sonics. Denver won.

Definitely not "Gotta Love..."What I can't understand is the complacent attitude which the players displayed...Did they violate their curfew & go bar-hopping in Westwood the night before?The only player with energy was Cisco.

But props to the Clipps. They showed up ready to play & defend. They were certainly the better team.They deserved to win.
