GAME 45 vs New Orleans, Preview & Game Thread

NEW ORLEANS HORNETS (Good)  Awesome offense, awesome defense, slow pace
SACRAMENTO KINGS    (Iffy)  Okay offense, terrible defense, fast pace

I'm not really in the mood for typing at this moment... which makes it great relief I exchanged plesantries with Hornets247.com's Ryan Schwan this week. I asked some pertinent questions about the Hornets, and his answers follow:
Q: Tyson Chandler's obviously a defensive monster, and Chris Paul got good instincts, too. But looking at the rest of the rotation... this shouldn't be such a good defense. How have they done it?

A: Yeah - it doesn't seem like they'd be a top 5 defense, does it?  My Hornets247 co-blogger Ron Hitley recently wrote this about our defense:

"The Hornets defensive rotation has amazed me recently. Next time Chris is playing D out high, and his man feeds the post, watch what happens. Against the Spurs, Parker would feed Duncan inside, and Chris would drop down to double. Our weak side guard (usually Mo-Pete), would then come across to cover Parker. Now when Duncan would kick it back out to Parker, Chris wouldn't even look to get back out there, not even glance in that direction, because he knows his teammate has him covered. Instead, he would turn and go right across the lane to find whoever Peterson had left. It's amazing how much trust they must have in each other to do this right. If one guy messes up it all falls apart."

It's true - this starting five works together beautifully.  They cover each other, defend hard, and foul intelligently.  They give up less free throws than any other team in the league.  Even Peja of the much-maligned defense works well for us.  He may have trouble with an explosive perimeter scorer(who doesn't?) and avoids giving hard fouls under the hoop, but in general he's got great anticipation and closes out beautifully on three point shooters.  Plus, he's tall. For that matter, the whole starting five is tall besides Paul.  Chandler's 7'1", West is 6'9", Peja 6'10", Peterson 6'7".  Not so easy to shoot over that.

Q: Could David West be a bigger factor than he is, or is his offensive role sort of topped out? Should we expect even more in the future, or just more consistent, workmanlike 20/10s?

A: West is something of an anomaly.  Unlike a lot of players, he does work hard at his game, and has managed to add something to his offensive game every year.  He started as a bare rebounding foul machine in his first year, cut the fouls in his second, added an automatic jumpshot in his third, developed a solid two dribble-drive in his fourth, and has now put it all together into a full post game where he can go left or right.  He also cleans up issues every year - Last year he got called every game for the first twenty games for pump-faking and then taking steps before the ball hit the floor.  Never see it anymore.  He started this season being called for lowering the shoulder once every game.  Now his angle of approach has changed, and he's rarely called for it.  That said, I'm not sure what else he can add to his game at this point.  He is undersized, and that does limit him some for a post player.  He's also on a team with a lot of offensive options and he's unselfish.  I can't see his PPG going much higher than 21 or 22, though I do expect his assists to rise.  He's already more than doubled his assists in January  over what he was doing in November.

Q: As of today, has the Peja signing been a good move? If you could cancel it today, would you?

A: I would not cancel it.  Yes, he's overpaid.  Yes, it hurt horribly last year when he missed most of the season with back issues.  But in the end, his role is vital to this teams success, and there aren't many guys I can think of who would fill it better than him.(Rashard Lewis, maybe? But look what he's making.) He's not the Peja who was getting MVP consideration for part of '02-'03, but he's about 80-85% of that guy, and he only has to serve as the team's third option.  I can tell you it's nice to have a guy easily capable of 20 points a game serving as our third offensive option.

A billion gratitudes to Ryan, both for the insight and the reprieve from thinking.

Go Kings.

Come on Kings
This is a tough one.

I still can't believe Kwame Brown, two picks and some garbage were enough to get Pau Gasol...

I thought we prolly coulda put together a better offer with Corliss Williamson (resigned and then waived), Artest (who's gonna opt out) and maybe Garcia or Douby. Our picks are better too!

That wouldn't have been a half bad deal.

Bibby
Martin
Salmons
Gasol
Miller

I know this is the game thread but can't help giving off some serious frustration.

Gotta give it to the lakers general manager...
I don't think he could have pulled off a more perfect trade... Got rid of players they didn't need, the picks might hurt a little... and memphis got a great package 2 picks that will be moderately high, and kwame's unrestricted after this year, didn't look into crittendon but who cares.

Now the lakers who were already doing much better than anticipated have another great player to put next to Kobe... If the lakers don't make conference finals I might have a good laugh.

Man...
Fuck where the Lakers end up.

I'd rather see the Kings choke in the playoffs then see them in the damn lottery.

That's why I laugh
when people say we have to resign ourself to getting garbage for Artest/Bibby and whoever else we ship out. One man's garbage is another man's prized possession.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Feb 1, 2008 5:47 PM PST up reply actions

this is good
maybe some of the western elite teams would finally want artest or bibby

by kingme on Feb 1, 2008 6:30 PM PST up reply actions

wouldnt it be sick
if the lakers got Artest from us? Let's say they decide to take on K9's contract (Odom anyone?)

Odom is good too!
Me likey Artest and Thomas for Odom

Peja
was always better defender than given credit for. He was never great, but he was never awful either. I always had more of a problem with his lack of rebounding for his size than his man-on-man or team D.

by Kusian on Feb 1, 2008 5:03 PM PST reply actions

I agree
he's pretty good at guarding his man. he can't rebound though

by kingme on Feb 1, 2008 5:53 PM PST up reply actions

Well said Kusian
I also had a problem with how he had difficulties creating his own shot. I always felt he could have been effective in the block using his size & strength. Oh well, you live you learn I suppose.

Kings on D
I still think they use Artest on West. I don't think Mikki's going to play a lot. I think Francisco can match up OK with Peja. I think Martin, Salmons and maybe even Douby will get some time against Paul. Paul will eat either Bibby or Udrih for lunch. If Mo Pete is stroking it, it could be a long night. Pick your poison.

I'm not sure who's going to cover Brad, but he should be able to get some shots out high and hopefully draw Chandler away from the hoop.

Biedrins did a pretty nice job on West the other night in some possessions. The Warriors basically tried to let Paul get his and shut down the rest of the team and succeeeded well enough to get the W.

No Effing Way....
I know we're good at home, and I know we usually do better in the first half than we do in the second... but if you had told me we were going to make New Orleans look like the lottery team they were a few years ago, I probably would have accused you of being on some good drugs and asked if you were sharing...

Crazy defense, ball movement, etc... If only I had some beer to go with this game ';-P

we forced 8 turnovers already. Hawes is our Darko Milicic. The human victory cigar baby!

I keep wondering...
At what point in the game we will no longer have DOUBLE New Orlean's score.  This is so beautiful I might have to watch the game a few times.  After which I will watch the game a few more times.

The Kings have got to be the most underrated team in the NBA.

How about Miller vs. Chandler
so far! Miller 12pts. 7 boards 3 asts. Chandler 8 pts. 2 boards 0 assists. Kings up 66-44 at the break

by Kfan in Korea on Feb 1, 2008 9:29 PM PST up reply actions

Yep we
definitely need to trade a center who is consistantly giving us a double double. Blow up the team!

Please. Any team that can beat Dallas, SA, NO, and Detroit should not be blown up.

Tough West
I guess u don't blow up a team that still is on the verge of missing the playoffs two years in a row
The Sacramento Kings: Where Amazing Happens!

by kingme18 on Feb 1, 2008 9:39 PM PST up reply actions

I guess that's really the question
Do you blow up a team that may miss the playoffs two years in a row in the tough west? Or do you look at the fact that we are 8-2 and try to add the pieces that will get us into the playoffs. I much rather see us make the playoffs. That being said, make the trades that will make you a better team now or in the future. But this sure doesn't look like a team that needs to be blown up.

I'm nitpicking,
but I still get irritated when Ron and Mike put up more shots than Kevin. I'll give Ron a little room on this one considering that he did a lot of his work down low and he was taking advantage of mismatches.

Back to the good stuff - has Brad put on a clinic for Okafor and Chandler or what?!?

Ron & Mike's shot selection
have always irritated me which is yet another reason I've really stumped to trade them both.

Why the hell dont we want both Bibby and Beno on the roster??????

We've got to keep both of them!

by Hoops916 on Feb 1, 2008 9:55 PM PST reply actions

Yeah
We have the west's version of Ford and Calderon (I'm not saying those two play like them, I'm just saying we have 2 quality PGs - Yes, I think Mike is still a quality player)

by kingme on Feb 2, 2008 6:31 AM PST up reply actions

Gut feeling...

They keep Bibby. And not just this season. One or two more. . .Artest's contract, not his play, makes him expendable, otherwise I'd keep this team in tact through the playoffs. Can what we saw tonight really not compete against a Warriors crew with Webber? Remember this is a Kings team only now coming in control of all of their faculties (I know we know this...)

by rbiegler on Feb 1, 2008 10:33 PM PST reply actions

Nice win
But unless Francisco is hurt, there is no way a talented player like that should only get 6 minutes. Matchups are one thing, but the guy is a very productive NBA player and should have been used to spell some guys minute, especially when the team was up big.
Disclaimer: I am anti-Bibby.
