Monday Footnotes
- Francisco Garcia, out for the week at least.
- Scott Howard-Cooper talks Ron Artest trade possibilities. Meanwhile Sam Amick talks to folks inside the team, who indicate they've made up their mind on whether to trade or not. I think we can assume which way that decision's gone.
- On his blog, Amick mentions two women were... getting familiar during the segment where radio guy (Jim Kozimor, in this case) talks to TV guys. I missed it (three fast-forward arrows when Peaches invades my picture). Anyone see it?
- Same link, vastly more important: 'Typically, Koz and Grant - who some say haven't spoken unless they absolutely had to in eight years - bend over backwards to avoid conversing during the segment. This time, though, Koz asked Grant a question directly, with Grant remaining silent while Jerry quickly picked up the chatter and the answer after the brief awkward moment. Koz, who broke out laughing as the awkward meter kept rising, ended the segment with a generic parting comment. When he switched back to the radio side, he said, "I'd like to thank Jerry Reynolds for the Crosstalk tonight."' First, Koz verifies the 'Peaches' nickname. Now we find out there's a cold war going on? I need to listen to Koz's show more often.
- It's hard for outsiders to really have a solid grasp of the state of a franchise. (I know those from writing about other franchises.) But this piece on the quasi-rebuild by Brian Spencer at Empty the Bench is spot-freaking-on. The Brad Miller stuff is particularly cogent, especially this line: "Can the Kings make the necessary roster tweaks to become legitimate contenders before Miller's inevitable decline? And if not, should they give thought to also trading him while his value is probably as high as it'll ever be?" Tough decision by the front office, only made tougher by the lack of options behind Miller. (Free 3-Wil?)
- One Rocky Mountain News columnist isn't sold on Ron Artest as an answer for the Nuggets.
- John Krolik has the latest entry in BallHype's Bibliotech series. It's on that seminal 90s hoops book The Last Shot by Darcy Frey.
- (Kelly Dwyer is back. And he is insulting lazy baristas.)

I knew I liked Koz
Oh, and I may have said this earlier, but being served a beer by Slamson was awesome.
Slamson and guest hosting
Blog it or respond to our enquiring minds here!
Did you have the guts to use Section 214's "Try our thick creamy shakes"? I have been totally unsuccessful in finding the post that started that non-sequitor!
C'mon, Muff! If not a full on Pookey style blog, at least tell us here!
I promise that LeaguePassAddict will show you pictures of her...

Try our thick creamy shakes
Here is the genesis of the above mentioned slogan, the result of TZ's fatal decision to unleash me on the unsuspecting good people of StR -

On TV
On the radio, the roles are reversed. At least in my opinion.
On KHTK Koz is shockingly different, Peaches is worse times one hundred.
I haven't listened to KHTK in a year, but the last time I listened to Grant you should never question the Maloofs or anyone in the Kings org or you will be labeled an idiot. And he will track you down and kill not only you, but your parents, and your children. And your children's children if they have any.
Koz seemed much more willing to question the status quo and that sweet sweet homer on TV has a potty mouth and a mean streak on the radio.
I should probably give them another try but damn, I just got the Rise Guys and RantLamb out of my head!
By the way, I think I was right when I predicted a year of Grant filled with references to Vladefest. Ick. "Well, when I was in..." "Jerry, you've never tasted a (fill in the blank) until you've had one in..." "Someday, Jerry, I'm going to take you to Vladefest so you can taste the (fill in the blank) that I ate at Vladefest, it's the best in the world" "I was invited to Vladefest and when they introduced Chris Webber and he told the audience they could call him Chris Webberovich, they lost their minds at..." Puke.
I wish sign lady would put up a picture of Grant in his dancing pants at Vladefest with a quote of "Shake yo' Peaches".
Really, I think I'd pay money to see that sign. Of course, that would have to be a nationally televised game because Comcast/Maloof SE wouldn't show it.
Somebody, make it happen!
For the record? I love Vlade. I just question two of his decisions. A) Going back to the Lakers. B) Inviting Peaches to his really deserved celebration.
I have this problem with Koz...
(He actually used that term, like it was 1958 or something).
Ever since then I've noticed little political comments Koz works into his talking points, and I realized he's one of those gated community wingnuts who called french fries "freedom fries" and thinks he knows everything about the world while living in a myopic little whitebread bubble.
Anyway, I notice Koz has yet to back up his talk by enlisting in the Marines, but if he's still interested in politics I'd love to here him apologize for:
A) using his hoops show as a political forum and going out of his way to insult a lot of his listeners and...
B) being such a clueless dumb-ass.
Hey!
I knew it!
Ha!
I saw the girl in the background
Also, I remember back a few years ago when David Stern was at Arco for a game and Koz did a sideline interview with him while wearing one of those hideous "Team Maloof" jerseys. The next day on KHTK a caller mentioned how ugly those jerseys were and Peaches said something like "Yeah, and I wouldn't be caught dead interviewing the commisioner with one". That was the first time I realized there was something going on between the two.

Thanx for the pass along
Scoop & Amick re-iterate common feelings around the front offices in the NBA about Artest, but I would also submit it's an attempt to get him at lower value than it would take if his shenanigans didn't always take hold.
Last but not least thanks for the link to "Empty the Bench" which was an interesting take on Brad Miller. I'm not sure what premium value would exactly mean when you trade Miller, but dumping his salary for the next 2 seasons would be a brilliant start. Oh wait I've already said that. DOH!
The Last Shot
I really want to read this too and loved the ballhype link that I found elsewhere. So many of these players make more than we can imagine but come from so much lower than we could ever survive. And they end up leaving so many equally talented players behind them because they either don't have the brain, or the dedication, or they believe their hype before they achieve anything and find nothing at the end. Reading about the smartest kid and best player never making it out killed me, and to find out that the "marginal" to the story; the 4th best player made it more poignant. I really think it's more about who can be hustled and who out-hustles the hustlers. The three main characters got hustled, the minor 4th character out-hustled the hustlers to make it. Good for him, whether we like him or not. The dude made it and this book shows part of the reason why. Now I just hope the kid holds onto his millions and doesn't end up like Spreewell in a couple of years.
Sorry for the run-on sentence.
Peaches and Koz
Is one of them missing an eye?

Sorry
The funny thing is, Peaches would be a lot easier to take as a game announcer if he just didn't come off as such a jerk on his radio show. Koz is probably OK, too, but he reminds me of the kid that always got everyone else in trouble while getting away clean. I don't know these guys personally and I'm probably way off, but that's the vibe I get.
Tools
Seriously, Peaches grated on me before I ever listened to his radio show. He just grates harder now.
I thought Koz was a teddy bear when I first saw him on TV, then I listened to his radio show and thought...WOW, is this guy ever different from what I thought. But he's still the micro-tool to Peaches macro-tool to me.
Two tools, one much larger than the other. And I am not referring to their height.
Agree on Empty the Bench
"K-Mart is now the team's premier scorer and has proven he can step up in crunch time."
Maybe he will step up in crunch time if Bibby and Artest are dealt. He'll certainly get the chance.
I'd live to see him bring it like he did in his first two games back from injury, when it seemed like he was operating in a totally different gear. That was really fun to watch.
NBA teams bide time in the early stages of games, and the defense is a lot more slack as teams play their subs more and are content to stay close. That makes it easier to put up solid numbers in the first three quarters.
The onus on Kmart is to prove he can be this team's prime time player when defenses stiffen in winning time.

Don't Forget
Hey...
Brian Spencer is right; we have a long way to go, guys. But I do believe we'll get there, (Geoff Petrie willing). Keep repeating this mantra: interior defense, rebounding, quicker, taller, more athletic.
Thank you.
