ESPN's Sheridan With a Ton of Artest Rumors

Chris Sheridan's ESPN trade deadline preview has a ton of rumors regarding Ron Artest and the Kings. He starts by saying Artest is the player most likely to be traded, and that the recent rumors are too small -- the Kings are really trying to attach Kenny Thomas' contract to Ron-Ron.

Here are the rumors he offers up:

1. Artest & K-9 (woof!) for Linas Kleiza and Nene.
An interesting combination of previous rumors. It sort of begs the question: Would you take Nene for Kenny Thomas straight up? Kleiza got the edge over Artest is a previous poll... but adding Nene for K-9 (woof!) is a really tough thing to wrap your brain around. Nene makes more money and is signed two extra years. He's recovering from testicular cancer. Also, he has talent and he's under 30 years of age. I cannot endorse this deal without at least two more hours of consideration.

(Also, it'd need the expiring contracts of J.R. Smith and Von Wafer included to work.)

2. Artest & K-9 (woof!) for... Eddy Curry and Jerome James.
An interesting combination of my sixth and seventh circles of Hell. A big man who can't defend or rebound, and a salary sponge signed to a deal one year shorter than K-9's. No, no, God no. Luckily, Sheridan says that one's a no-go.

Other stuff: Kyle Lowry's up for grabs, Denver wants to trade its pick, Denver doesn't want to give up Kleiza. Aaaaaah.

Poor Poodle
What does it say about your playing ability/atittude when your would rather take on a guy who just had a malignant tumor removed and a couple extra years on his contract than wait it out with what we got? More damning evidence against the Muss era.

Trades
I don't like trade #1 because it's a HUGE salary outlay for a guy who's been in the league six years and never been better than decent.  That's not even considering his nearly constant health issues.  I'd rather sink less money into Kenny Thomas and be rid of him than be stuck with that salary forever.

If Petrie makes trade number two, he's getting a nut punch from me.

The Kleiza, Najera and first round pick deal is golden.  Petrie should make that trade TODAY.

agreed
i don't know much about kleiza, but i agree with everything else.  especially the nut punch.  i wouldn't fire GP over much, but that one is a definite.  but give GP some credit, he is pretty savy and he know james ain't worth crap.  and i am sure the "nut punch" reference is a big deterence as well.

Trade #2
That looks like a Knicks version of us goofing on the trade machine. And I am fairly certain that Zeke uses the trade machine to see if a deal will work...OK, he has a staffer help him with the trade machine - "Damn, girl! You sure know how to work that thing. And you're pretty good with the trade machine, too!"

I think the nene and kleiza would be decent enough, we need a PF !!!!

No No To Nene
I just can't get too excited about a guy that has only once averaged even 7 boards a game and has never reached the 1 block a game level, let alone that we would owe him $9.7/10.5/11.4/11.6 million over the next four years (not counting this year - and the 4th year is his option). Between the knee injury, cancer and a couple of other injuries he has missed 154 out of 293 games over the past 3 and a half years (53%!).

On the other hand, he is still only 25 and does still have some upside and he is a sure step up (when healthy) over our current group manning the 4.

I'd much rather have Najera's expiring, Kleiza and a pick if that deal were available and ride K9(woof!) out for another year and a half until he becomes an expiring (and more tradeable) contract.

I checked Nene's stats and even when he was playing 30+ min, he wasn't even getting double digit rebounds. I would expect any PF to be able to do that with 30+ min.

Here this is according to 82games.com
Nene's link. My suggestion is you go back the last 2 years and look at those when you realize he's only played in 10% of the total minutes this season.

Agreed to an extent
But if Nene gets healthy and performs to his potential, that would be a huge piece of the puzzle for this team in the future.

You can really only play it safe for so long before you take a big leap into the unknown (see Webber, Chris).

I'd rather that leap be Darrell Arthur
or Brandan Wright yes? (Cheap. Athletic. Young. All I want at this point out of the 4.)

I can't disagree with that, otis
I would be against the Nene trade right up to the moment that we made it, then I would cautiously support it. Two faced? Perhaps. But it's those same feet of clay that have kept me happily married through the years.

You're right - sometimes you just have to take the chance. If Nene's upside is greater than anything else on the table than I guess you take it. The contract stills scares the hell out of me, though.

I'm with you...
I think that pretty much sums up my feelings about Nene as well.

It's almost like trading Miller for expiring contracts . . . I'm not excited about either idea, but in the end I think I'd be ok with them.

But MAN, that contract.......

by smgmatt on Feb 12, 2008 2:05 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No scenario's perfect
What you do is look at the talent at hand, the talent you could get in the draft, and of course trades/free agency, and proceed from there. To be honest trading Brad Miller, especially with the way he's playing, is not as absolutely important as trading Bibby & Artest today is. That being said dumping his contract would give the team enough flexibility to re-sign Beno at least. (They don't have enough cap space to dump to pick up 2 quality FA's regardless of what they do. You would have 1 player on the roster under that scenario: Kevin Martin. I doubt that's the way Petrie wants to go.)

I agree COMPLETELY
Shipping out Artest & Bibby needs to be priority one with dumping the contracts of K9 & SAR in the second priority.

Miller probably falls in 2B.

Chris Sheridan is a T-O-O-L

Trade criteria
Get better, get cheaper or get younger.

Do the proposed trades work on any of these levels?

Getting better is a big if considering Nene's health, but if Kleiza turns into a winner, the answer is yes, considering you are assuming Artest is a goner anyway and Thomas is a zero.

Getting stuck with Nene's deal isn't getting cheaper, and eventually you have Kleiza's next deal to worry about.

You are getting younger, though.

Interesting. I just hate to have that much money tied up for longer than now with Nene with potentially not much to show for it.

awesome trade prospects
One one hand, we have a guy with cancer, on the other hand we have a guy with an uninsured heart. Yet both still seem like improvements (even slightly) at the 4.

Three-way Deal w/ Memphis & NY
Here's another deal involving Memphis and New York:

Trade Machine

Please notice the included draft picks...

Kings get: Renaldo Balkman, Kyle Lowry, 2009 1st Round Pick (Mem), and Kwame Brown (Mem). (Youth and cap-space.)

Knicks receive: R. Artest (Sac), Mike Bibby (Sac), and Mike Miller (Mem).

Grizzlies receive: S. Marbury (NY), F. Jones (NY), and 2008 1st round pick (NY). (Another draft pick this year, along with an expiring contract this summer, and a huge expiring contract for 2009.)

I'd love to grab Balkman, add another likely high 1st rounder for '09 and cap space to resign Beno, etc. this off-season.  But I'm not sure Memphis would take Marbury on, even for one season.

Can Kwame
be re-traded that soon?

by LeaguePassAddict on Feb 12, 2008 4:13 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Also
Memphis might balk at the swap of draft positions with the Knicks. Even though they are right next to each other now, the Grizzlies will probably do worse for the rest of the season than the Knicks.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Feb 12, 2008 4:16 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Picks in different years
They wouldn't be swapping picks in his scenario.  Memphis would get NYK's pick for the UPCOMING draft, and Sac would get Memphis' pick in the FOLLOWING draft.

From their perspective, they'd basically be trading Next Year's pick for another pick THIS year.

by smgmatt on Feb 13, 2008 7:23 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting
I don't see Memphis making this trade.  If they just want expiring contracts for Mike Miller then Miami would be a much better partner to trade with (e.g. J-Will & Ricky Davis).

NYK would also probably need to give something else up (probably to Memphis), because they'd get Bibby, Mike Miller, & Artest for Marbury (whom they may buy out this summer anyway), Jones (expiring), Balkman and a pick.  If Balkman was Lee, then the deal makes a little more sense, because they'd be giving up Lee and their high 1st Round Pick, but that Balkman package looks a lot like what Sacramento has already turned down for Artest (minus Starbury obviously).

Aside from that, Sacramento gets a pretty good return in value, and if we got Balkman (instead of Lee) then the only thing I'd want to change would be shipping out K9 as well (if possible).  I don't think it would happen, but it made me think and that makes it an interesting trade proposal in my book.

You're right LeaguePassAddict, I thought he couldn't be traded this soon either, but the Trade Machine allowed it.  It's probably flawed though and therefore my trade is as well
